I might pick one up for Titanfall, but at this point I don't give a shit about a multi-player shooter, so maybe Q1 2014 I'll be in.

I'll wait and see. Price wars might do me a favor, or Valve's SteamOS box might prove interesting. Either way, I have a 6-month backlog of stuff to play anyway.

Valve's SteamOS box is something that already exists if you have an HDMI cable.

Theres a whole line of HTPC cases that will fuck up your decor a lot less than say hmmm a Xbox360 or Xbone... I don't see your point.

My plan is to buy the low-end one for $99 and use it to stream to my TV from a much higher-performance server in my wiring closet. I don't want the server to be in the living room because cooling isn't as good there, and because its power requirements would be bad for that circuit -- which isn't protected well enough from surges anyway. Since I'm already maintaining the server, this makes the most sense for my use case -- a $300 console will get replaced in a few years by another $300 (or higher) console, but a $99 terminal will work just fine until we jump to a much more demanding video standard than 1080p or controller telemetry just gets incredibly dense. With the advent of new motion controls, I can see that happening, but so can Valve -- hopefully, it'll support that telemetry density right out the door; my purchasing decision will probably depend on that.

The thing is, TV manufacturers are already talking about having a telemetry client for games built into the TV itself. You could use it to play games on any online service, processing would be server-side, and it would only increase the cost of TV's by about $50 -- and you're going to buy your TV on Black Friday anyway. This whole conversation will only be relevant for a couple more years; this console generation is supposed to be the last console generation.

Consoles are not "replaced in a few years" by newer consoles.

I pre-ordered.

Then I cancelled that shit. Maybe after it has been out a while and proven itself I'll buy one, but for now, the 360 is fine.

Why in the hell can't they manage to build a console that has backwards compatibility is my biggest question. I don't want to have to continue running the 360 for the games I still want to play if I have that thing in the entertainment center as well.

If they'd stop changing processor types and architectures every fucking release, backwards compatibility wouldn't be an issue.

They went from Intel in the Xbox, to PowerPC in the 360, back to Intel in the Xbox One. Sony did about the same with the ps2->ps3->ps4

There were worse screw-ups, but they're not public yet.

The launch titles for the XBone are not blowing up my skirt. I might get a PS4 for the JRPG titles.
