I'm surprised this hasn't come up here yet. Playstation network has been down for a solid 6 days and apparently was hacked. They just released info that whoever managed to compromise the network pretty much got away with 70+ million users' name, address, account number etcetc...they're not even sure if credit card info was stolen or not but it sounds like the intruders got ahold of everything the network had on it.

Oddly enough I deleted my credit card stuff from PSN a couple weeks ago while visiting my dad's and setting up his PS3 lol.......so hopefully that info was safe.

Quite the shit storm, however...what with practically everything on a ps3 (including netflix) requiring a PSN login before you can use them. Let's not forget the games that can't be run w/out a link to PSN, the 4 new games that just came out and whatnot.

Bleh

netflix does NOT require a login to PSN. Just cancel out of the login dialogs and and it works fine. =P Hulu plus, on the other hand, DOES require a PSN login.

If you use PSN, and have a recent credit card on file, go ahead and report that card lost/stolen and change all of your passwords for everything you use online.

Anyway I am sure this is bullshit. Sony are in a war against hackers and they want to generate hate toward them.

The real reason most likely is the "rebug" custom firmware allowing you to play on developers PSN and allowing you to download PSN games and DLC for free. The video of that are being closed by youtube as they are uploaded.

That's most likely the real reason. Sony are trying to shift hatred of the public on the "hackers".

Hacking is fine. I'm sure that if all Geohot unleashed was being able to install LInux on your PS3 again, Sony wouldn't care nearly as much. Granted, it is their fault they left the keys to the kingdom on every piece of PS3 hardware instead of a more realistic public/private key encryption model, but once they started downloading things without paying for them, they're basically thieves, not hackers.

That's like saying the guys who write Fake.AV and Zeus (two of the most prominent pieces of malware right now) are just programmers.

Netflix on PS3 has better picture quality than on 360, which is why this sucks.

Read above -- Netflix works just fine.

Hulu+ does not.

Right, but that wouldn't have actually happened (properly) without the ability to sign, for a number of reasons. It also left GAPING holes in other areas, and Sony had already begun the process of shutting down hackers, thus there was no motivation to do a private disclosure of the vulnerability.

The difference between Geohot and Fail0verflow's efforts and that of virus writers is that Fake.AV and Zeus' primary purpose is malicious in nature. For these guys, that clearly was not the case. The only thing they did outside the norm was avoid private disclosure, in typical grey hat fashion.

I'd say that writing a custom firmware with the express intent of getting free content instead of paying for it is decidedly black hat.

But that's NOT the express intent. There are SOME folks out there who repacked firmware with piracy and rebug packages, but not the actual hackers. Is Steve Gibson responsible for the UPnP viruses because of his research? I don't see the comparison here - especially in light of my participation in this scene ;P

so some people took the good work done by the hackers, went black hat with it, and did bad things?

I don't see how what we're saying is actually any different.

Yeah, but it's not like Geo and Co. are responsible for ANY of this. One has absolutely NOTHING to do with the other. Consumers can, should, and WILL do what they want with items they purchase. Vendors and manufacturers need to be prepared for this fact and address it. Sony's terrible security trust with regards to developer networking is the #1 culprit here.

That downtime which happened 4 years ago was intermittent, and had long stretches of time(hours at a time, in some cases) where it worked just fine. It wasn't due to hacking, but increased demand.

Personally, I'm more concerned with a network that has demonstrated massive vulnerabilities to hackers than I am about networks that aren't prepared for increased load(even if the latter could be said to be related to some extent via DoS attacks). Though I'm sure Vanamar will have some input on that since he knows more about it than I do by far =p

To be honest, if I were a network security guy at any company with a breach this size, I'd be considering ritual suicide at this point. Every network has vulnerabilities. Any admin who says his network doesn't is lying or isn't worth his paycheck. The best you can do is mitigate as much as you can, and have alarms in place to detect what you can't patch against.

That is, if the 'breach' isn't a smokescreen. I'm on the fence on that one, and I doubt we'll ever know what really happened. I'd still advise changing all passwords even marginally related to PSN (basically, any account that also uses your PSN email) and reporting the card you use for PSN purchases lost/stolen. Can't hurt to be overly paranoid when it comes to shit like this.

I have to say -- from Gawker getting owned back in December, and Epsilon getting owned last month, I'm getting really sick of changing my passwords. =/

PSN doesn't spend the cash on its defense that a bank would. It's all about cost vs. benefit. The people to monitor and maintain network defense systems are getting to be as expensive as the hardware licenses. So passwords really need to be changed every 3-6 months as a matter of practice.

No network is unbreakable, and with the popularity of tunnels even finding a compromise is really tricky and requires a lot of time. Sprinkle in uneducated users installing apps that aren't supposed to be there and you're just asking for trouble. You can't patch stupid.

Yeah but this has apparently taken SOE offline also, not just the PSN, so it's a much bigger problem within Sony as a whole, and you'd really expect a large company like Sony to at least hire competent admins.

I can vouch for the fact that they actually got some credit card numbers. :/

The one card I forgot about and never use was the one I had tied to PSN, fucking figures.

They were pulled because every SOE service was compromised as well. Meaning, that in one form or another, everyone here has had their information compromised. If it was recent or not is up to you and how active you were with ANY Sony service.

This information includes all information on file. (They will not say a definate yes or no to credit card numbers and CCV numbers. They did admit that an old database from 2007 containing CC numbers and CVNs from users in Europe was compromised.)

This information includes....(not all mentioned in the article)
Your real name.
Your address on file
Your billing address associated with the CC on file
Birthday
Gender
Phone Number
Account Login
Account Password
Security Question and Answer

24.6 million accounts. Yes, the odds that one of them is yours is pretty good. In other words, change everything associated with SOE, and delete all billing information on file and never play those shit games again. Pay with game time cards if you don't want to use a credit card.

I hate gamespot but here's the link to the latest story about it.

If you cancelled all your SOE stuff when WoW came out, are you still in danger? The only time I gave Sony my info was when I played Everquest way back when.

Not every Debit/CC changes it's number when it's renewed, and finding the new expiration date is a simple matter of guesswork since only the year typically changes.

Yes. The information taken was not game specific. If you had a station account at any time, it was compromised.

At current, there are zero confirmed links to any fraudulent charges related to this. Me personally, I have already replaced any card or account that I have associated with anything Sony related. It's a painless thing.

At least regarding SOE, I haven't heard anything either.

I have reliable sources that say that after the original hack, they ran up anywhere from $5-20 on each card to test validity, then offered up cards for sale for $5-10 per number/expiration/cvv/address combination.

SECURITY UPDATE

Country: USA (EN)
MORE INFO
Press Release
Puerto Rico Residents
Massachusetts Residents
As previously announced, we have been conducting an ongoing, thorough investigation stemming from the cyber attack in April and promised to notify you should there be any changes to the situation.

A press release was issued May 2, 2011 outlining these details. We are sending customer service notifications via email to all of our impacted account holders whose customer data may have been stolen as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These emails will be sent by Innovyx, our third party email distributor, and will contain either 'soe.innovyx.net' or 'soe.sony.com' in the sender field.

SOE is committed to delivering secure, stable and entertaining games for players of all ages and we're working around the clock to ensure this situation is resolved as quickly as possible. We deeply regret the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your continued patience and feedback.

Sincerely,
Sony Online Entertainment

============================================================================

CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTIFICATION

May 2, 2011

Dear Valued Sony Online Entertainment Customer:
Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack. Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) and about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have also been obtained. We will be notifying each of those customers promptly.

There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment.

We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company, but on May 1st we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen and we are notifying you as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the attack and as a result, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off all SOE game services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When SOE's services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your Station or SOE game account name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit http://www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We are committed to helping our customers protect their personal data and we will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in regions in which such programs are commonly utilized.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. The only problem is that the class action may just give you a free year of sony services.

At this point I don't really care what we end up getting, I just want to be a part of the people they have to pay in some way.

Then become a lawyer and file the suit. In this kind of case, they're likely the only ones to see a real payday.

A Toronto law firm is starting one. If you are Canadian you can join in.

They mention a similar suit filled in the US last week.

They also released info that another 20 million accounts with cards from SOE 2007 servers were stolen.

My bank is aware of the SOE intrusion, they sent me a new Debit Card and they are monitoring any transactions how that are out of my normal spending patterns (Odd they monitor that stuff)

To bad I just came back to EQ and now the server has been down for almost a week :(

Not odd at all. They are just quieter about it than, say, UK banks as an example. In the UK, if you went on vacation, swiped your card somewhere...if your phone rang shortly after that and you didn't answer it...you could potentially find yourself with your card deactivated for "possible fraud". God help you if you were someplace without cell coverage. heh.

It is in the bank's best interest to cut off fraud usage before it gets past a certain point and a bank will be very....active...on something that is in it's own best interest.

Yeah I experienced that when we went on Vacation to florida a few years ago, card was blocked without a call to my cell though. Wasnt to fun trying to rent a car. hah.

On the side note, SOE still has no ETA on coming back online, now rumors are stating will not be back on line until end of the month.

Sony Online Entertainment just posted the following on Facebook:

"We wanted to let you know that our games will not be up this weekend. We are working around the clock to get our services back up and running soon. Thank you for your continued patience and support."

For more details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

So what's up with all of the links regarding linux being back on the ps3? Why would these folks want it on a console? Is it so they can run bots hacks and hacked firmware or something or is this some sort of "I am the l33t playorz cuz I have a special OS"

The ps3 is officially the world's cheapest supercomputer.

Previously, the 'install other os' option let you install linux "officially" -- but you only got access to a limited set of hardware. The new custom firmware removes all limitations and gives full access to the Cell cpu.

The US Air Force actually uses them in a cluster, and it's extremely powerful for the cost.

Netflix on PS3 has better picture quality than on 360, which is why this sucks.

That's confusing; it's the same stream in the same resolution at the same framerate. If you're experiencing image degradation on your 360, you might be looking at a last-mile thing between the device and your TV -- if you're using HDMI for the PS3 and component for the Xbox, for example, swap 'em and look again.

I don't wanna sound rude, but there's also the confirmation bias angle; we all do that. Identical experiences have been demonstrated to be more enjoyable when associated with your established preferences; if you prefer the PS3, and all else is equal, you'll prefer Netflix on the PS3.

True dat -- but the HVAC costs suck -- PS3's in a physically close cluster have some incredible heat issues. (Yeah, yeah -- so do 360's.)

(Annoying legalese: I have to say someplace that I work for Xbox when talking on these threads in a place where I haven't said it in a while. Enforcement says there's a rule. There ya go.)

Didnt sony pioneer the development of Blu Ray, wouldnt you think they would keep the quality just a tad better then their competition?

Sony had no choice in the matter. Netflix told them "let us have 1080p and 5.1 surround on the ps3 with the same stream as the 360 or we take our app and go home"

It's not like either interface is bad. Ditto the interface on my LG TV's Netflix app.

360 makes up for it with a better friends list interface. If I have to wait 10 minutes to "sync" my goddamned trophies again on the PS3 I'm gonna explode.
