It finally happened to me. What's the deal with this? Is it covered if I'm still under warranty, and is there any gotcha that I should know about?

It's been a shitty week.

RRoD has an automatic 3 year extended warrenty. All you have to do is register your system on Xbox.com.

Thanks... shockingly, I still have the original box, heh. Gotta switch my gamefly queue to PS3 only now. Should I remove the hard drive before sending it? Or will they preserve my data?

Yeah, keep your hard drive as you'll likely never see it again if you leave it on it

they'll tell you exactly how to ship it. basically you just rip out the hard drive and take off the faceplate. then they send you a box that fits it perfectly and you take it to a UPS store and within a couple of weeks you have a new one.

arkham on ps3 looks about 20x better than anything i played on 360 anyway

you really can fix it yourself with a $10 kit from ebay if they are trying to get you to pay any shipping charges.

Those X-clamps they use to keep the heatsinks on are the big reason why they Red Ring, and plus the made in china thermal compound they issue.

I thought it was the board itself warping in the heat and cracking a trace or 2?

Isn't it three years from purchase date? Or is it three years from when Microsoft made that "three year" announcement?

If Joxur is saying his 360 is original... I highly doubt it falls under the three year warranty thing since the 360 came out what, 5 years ago or so?

I must be dumb... 3 years from date of purchase. So if Joxur buys it in 2005, that means he is screwed... right?

Retail availability - November 22, 2005

If he registers his Xbox it will tell him if he is covered under RRoD policy. My Xbox 360's warranty expired February of this year (as the purchase date was Feb 08) but is still under RRoD Policy for another 3 years according to the website once I did register it.

So it is three years from the time you register it with Microsoft? Am I reading that right?

Just register on the site, they send you a coffin, it's a really simple process.

Yeah, from what I've heard the chances they won't replace one that RROD'd since they changed the policy are pretty slim. Since it became a PR nightmare and since they need people to buy Halo a whole lot more than they need people to buy the system, they're probably going to replace it for you without issue.

Last 2 I heard about were old systems and both got replaced outright with Zephyr boards when they got them back.

I just had this happen about a month ago. I registered my console, they gave me a printable shipping label, and I took it to UPS store and shipped it off. Apparently they have had so many come through the store, the girl at the counter knew exactly how much it would be for the box and packing without even looking it up.

When they shipped my console back to me, UPS mysteriously lost it after I wasn't home for the first delivery attempt. After some irritating claim service which Microsoft handled most of, they are shipping me a new one. Microsoft was very good about the whole lost package deal. When I called to tell them it was lost, they initiated a trace and called me a couple of different times to let me know the status and what to expect.

Besides the lost package deal, a good experience with the repair.

They stopped repairing RMA'd 360s when the press got wind of the failure rate and just give new consoles now.

Oh the irony...mine RRoD'd in the middle of playing Batman last night. Luckily I had the Repair page bookmarked (in case this was going to happen) and they're sending me the shipping label.

I'm not shocked...I'm more annoyed that I was on my way to completing the 40 Hit Combo Achievement on Batman when it locked up.

Seeing my local Craigslist has loads of Xbox 360s for sale. I wonder how many of these have RROD'd.

Oddly, haven't seen many Wiis or PS3s for sale. Just tons of 360s.

It's a shame they have this problem, since it's probably the best of the 3 consoles.

Most of them are probably either bricked or banned on Live for being old modded boxes.

The elite is $300 now, probably the best deal out there.

It also probably runs twice as hot for the same price! We'll see how the new design shakes out in practice. Personally, I prefer the larger one.

Nope, I've just accepted the fact Sony will never allow it and will just buy another PS2 if mine goes tits up.

After I finish Persona 3 and 4, there isn't anything else worth two shits that I worry about not ever playing again anyway.
