Wasn't sure if anyone played Earthbound on SNES and enjoyed it. If you did, I would suggest you check out the final Earthbound game possibly ever made.

http://mother3.fobby.net/

Mother 3 = Earthbound 2. They released the game in Japan only, was available on Gameboy Advanced. Fans decided to translate it after losing hope that the game would ever make it to NA and other countries.

Sorry for the bother if this is a repost, hope someone enjoys this.

? I never ended up buying it, I rented it from blockbuster, beat it, and made up my mind that it wasn't a very great game.

The fact that you played through it and found no quality is only further proof that you have no game taste =p Shouldn't you be telling us how crappy ALL mmorpgs are or something?!

First of all, I never said it had NO quality, it just wasn't a very good game. It was mediocre at best. Secondly, I have great game taste, I've played through dozens upon dozens of games I didn't really like when I beat them. Shrug. I've also played the most highly acclaimed games, some I liked, some I didn't (or as much).

Anyhow, every single MMO sucks, except WoW and EQ.

My point exactly. When is the last time you said something good about a niche game that isn't in the public spotlight? I would kick myself if those were the only two MMOs I had experienced. What a dull existence that would be.

I could take pictures of my ffxi, eq2, warhammer, aoc, daoc, vanguard, lotro, city of heroes, etc boxes. I've played every major (and quite a few minor, more than your average computer gamer for sure.) MMO around, and the fact is, they all fucking suck(ed).

Console gaming is no different. I've played tons of games, I've been a gamer for 20 years. You'd be hard pressed in finding a game that you have played, that I haven't played.

The only reason you listed those mmorpgs as sucking is because you didn't have anybody worth two shits to play them with.

You'd be right, if only you weren't wrong. >;( Well, you're half right:

At various times, I've had a very solid core of people who I played MMos with. Svifwin, Ladendra, Oryx folk, TSO folk, RL friends. Then the IRL friends I played with (4 of us) graduated from undergrad and started graduate school.

But, why the fuck do you have to have a core of friends to enjoy a game? That shouldn't be a prerequisite for a "quality" game. Yeah, you can have fun in most games if you play with friends, but I'm not some gypsy player who has no connections in games. I can go to any of the MMOs I listed, find friends I've played with, and go have a "decent" time but I can have a rock solid fun time in WoW, regardless. Same with EQ.

Now, I'm not much of an MMO player, since the last two that were supposed to be the "shit" completely ruined any new MMOs in the future for me, AoC and Warhammer are complete and utter failures and flat out TERRIBLE games, for many reasons. Total waste of money. I like to play WoW when I have time but honestly man, I'd rather watch a couple episodes of anime or catch up on manga or watch a DVR'd show I missed than play a video game right now in any "serious" manner. MMOs are much more fun when you can dedicate at least 10 to 20 hours a week in them, and at this point I really can't. (Excepting for when games come out, I will try to dig into them for at least 3 or 4 hours a night like AoC / Warhammer, since I had so many friends already organized for them at pre-release, we'd try to race to content. Too bad it all sucked.)

You don't understand why you need friends to enjoy a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE game?

So, the problem with Age of Conan and Warhammer Online are because I play with the wrong people?

No.

They're both terrible games.

The social aspect of games comes naturally, at least to me -- I've always had a set of friends to play with. However, even if I didn't, socializing still comes naturally. I don't know anyone who plays MMOs, IRL at least, that never talks to people. I've got connections from gaming the last 10 years online. I don't have a shortage of awesome people to play with or try new games with...

Anyhow, Givin's point was that I haven't played with quality players, which is sad because I've played w/ some of the "best" (or at least most well known) MMO players around in the past 10 years, from EQ, to WoW, to EQ2, and back again. I don't really expect him to know that, but that wasn't the problem with those games, and that's what I said. He and I probably agree that the populations in MMO are arguably full of more terrible players than good players.

No sir, the real problem here is that those games fucking sucked cock, barring DAoC maybe. Every other one of them blew cock. Sorry. There's a reason why they're defunct or on the brink of bankruptcy.

Re: Warhammer, no they're not. Closing 70 servers and plummeting subscription rates are not a sign of strength.

Lord of the Rings Online doesn't suck, and I would easy be able to say it's the most solid MMORPG made. It isnt what I like because I can get what I need out of an mmorpg with WoW, but what it does it does phenomenally.

City of * doesn't suck. It doesn't lie to you and say one thing and offer another. It is what it is and just like LotRO, it does it well.

FFXI doesn't suck, it's just not built for the NA market. Most people don't like slamming their balls in a car door over and over so they avoid it. It easily has the best story driven content that draws you into your character and makes them feel more important compared to most games where you are just that dude who brings 20 bear asses and spider testicles to people all over the world. Unfortunately it's problem is it took too long to get with the times and adjust.

Everquest 2 doesn't suck, and probably offers the most content of any game out there. The amount of raid shit in that game is staggering. Combine that with the fact it has a very friendly interface, and the ability to mentor up and down to play with friends at will and you have crazy amounts of replayability.

Your definition of suck is you don't like them. All of the above are doing just fine. The only two that you even mentioned that could be labled as such are Warhammer for it's core flaws that can not be fixed without a complete game overhaul and Vanguard for simply having zero support and core elements that weren't worth fixing and should have died with Sigil.

Why are you confused? It pulls off being itself well. Me thinking it's a shitty game doesn't make it shit. I hate the global cooldown in the game. I hate how some of the classes are very shallow and unimportant. To me it is very boring and better gameplay experience can be found elsewhere.

it is WoW lite. It does that perfectly. This is far and away from telling someone in another thread that going from WoW to LotRO would be a pretty futile move.

That doesn't make it a shitty game. It does make it a shitty WoW, especially when you are looking for something that you will find interesting when looking to get away from WoW.

Warhammer is sitting on 350k subscriptions, that's above the break even margin, that's in the profit making margin. They're doing just fine.

you posted that they barely made 300k subs, 50k is a pretty large discrepancy when a game has as few subs as that.

Oh come on, that's bullshit. :P

His opinion is wrong on those games, but it is not because of the reason you give. Ideally you shouldn't need to know anyone to enjoy a good MMORPG. After all, I didn't know a single soul when I started playing EQ1, and I played it for about three years.

Givin summed up why a number of those frankly, don't suck. I would argue that Vanguard and AoC were of more quality than half of those, especially to someone who had played them for more than 2 levels before giving up like Sky probably did.

The problem is not that you haven't played them(presumably), it's that you exclusively give praise to popular titles. If you were consistent in your taste of games(if you have taste), you would vary in your degree of support for popular titles because it wouldn't always match up with what's popular.

And also, of the highest praise I've ever seen you give games, they've almost always(probably 90 percent of the time) been action titles. Any discernable taste would have more distributed love for strategy and RPG gaming.

Earthbound 1 was good.
I mean come on.. one of the characters' name was "Poo", who was a psychic monk.
Mother 3 was pretty good, although very easy.
Same tongue-in-cheek story/dialogue.

I picked up a copy from the local import shop. Fumbled through it for a while. I also have the translated version on my computer but I haven't bothered to play through it all yet.
