it isn't update able though

maybe down the line if I had a second wii I'd modchip it, or when they make it update able that'd be nice.

not to mention, currently I think it takes over 24 hours to rip a single wii disc to 'back it up'

Has anyone put a modchip in their Wii? I have a friend who's interested in putting one in his.

You can softmod them now, look for WiiGator, I think it's called WiiLoader using the Twilight Princess Hack. It runs almost everything but there are some things it doesn't.

Can't go wrong with a hardware mod tho. For a number of reasons.
