I just ordered a new system, and I figure to stick XP into it, I have a few copies kicking around anyways.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4320035&CatId=332

I am wondering, should I go for Vista to take advantage of the newer direct X graphics, or would I be better off sticking with XP.

I don't have vista yet, and actually don't care to get it, so if XP will work good enough, I am thinking I would rather stick with it.

I put this topic here instead of tech, cause I am getting the new system just so I don't get lagged out in dalaran.

I'd say go for Vista on a new system. WoW will run fine, don't worry.

For that rig, XP will work fine.

Both Vista and XP are fine for WoW. I run two instances of WoW on my laptop that has Vista at once without too much problem at all.

(it's a pretty amazing laptop though)

I use Vista and the only time I wish I had XP is for ventrilo overlay.
It uses D3D to show who is talking in game.

Their newest version is supposed to work with Vista, but I can't get it to work.

DX9 vs DX10, in WoW? not important.

How is Windows 7, is it a hell of a lot better then Vista? I saw the beta up for download but I heard the only way to go back to Vista is to reformat or you just buy a Windows 7 key and upgrade.

7 is apparently what Vista should have been. It's very promising and receiving a lot of great reviews.

Even for a beta, Windows 7 is spectacular. It is indeed everything Vista should have (could have?) been had it not been rushed out the door.

I flattened my laptop this weekend (it was time for a fresh install anyway) and installed the beta and I'm pleasantly surprised. I only had to install my video driver and I was good to go.

I'm tossing 7 onto my backup laptop this evening. Maybe it will fix the dead battery!

When do people anticipate Windows 7 being formally released?

Installed Windows 7 64-bit yesterday. Only thing that doesn't work is my Kodak 5300 AiO printer.

One of my hard drives didn't appear. I had to go back to Vista, where it works.

What kind of hard drive? Is it plugged into the same controller as your primary boot drive? If not, then chances are it's a fucked up jmicron chipset that needs drivers from your mobo manufacturer.

Actually, that depends. If an SSD, Windows 7 will automatically partition and optimize a hidden boot partition. I believe it may do it for standard drives also, but in a different way.

All you really need to do, is install the chipset drivers as Van suggests, or just check to see if you just need to assign a drive letter to it.

Also, for AV purposes, Norton Internet Security 2009 works well on it. And before you laugh, it's the best security suite available right now, BY FAR. It's no longer the bloated beast it used to be. Takes less than 60 seconds to install, and has an extremely low footprint.

It's an IDE drive, set to slave, and the other HD on there is set to Master w/ Slave present. I don't know why it'd work in Vista, but not 7. I thought I fried a drive in the process, but I saw it in the BIOS. Weird stuff.

Two IDE hard drives on the same ribbon cable?

My inner geek is screaming on the inside.

Sadly, not since version 3.0. It's the reason I moved away from it, especially since v2 is going to see its update path flushed.

Two IDE drives on the same channel kills the performance of each drive.

so Vista is Windows 95 to Windows 7's Window's 98?
What will be XP?

You could tell that Microsoft was going to do something when all OEM's advertised, "Hey we'll ship XP if you like !"

I dunno, Windows 95 was a pretty groundbreaking solid release. I'd say more like, XP = the 95 of its time, 7 = the XP of it's time

Windows 95 was complete and utter shit until Windows95b came out. If you were an early adopter, you quickly learned true pain of configuration and the meaning of "plug and pray"

Honestly, Windows was shit until 98SE, then millennium was shit, then win2k was awesome, xp became awesome after SP1, and vista... well...took some learning to love.

The only problem i have ever had on Vista post SP is a bluescreen with the November Nvidia release drivers, and a simple rollback to non shit ones fixed that just fine. So not really a Vista problem. Secretly I wish 7 was Project M 2.0 and they can point fingers at people and do the nelson HA HA.
