Ah man... camp checks...camp lists... I remember those.

I also remember being able to hold down three seb camps solo after I got my epic.

I remember those days. I messed up the Raincaller bow by giving the npc the wrong coin gave it to him in gold or something. he wanted copper If I remember right. took all my items had to almost start over, was so disappointed. I do agree that game was a bit scary at times, but parts of it I wouldn't mind back, not sure on all of it.. but I do think most games out there now are missing the whole grouping thing In WoW got to top lvl solo and have to say it.. when I went back to EQ2 got to almost top lvl solo too.

I don't think its so much the game that people miss its to interaction with players. and to have your epic mean something. I use to think it was so uber when I saw a player with the epic for his class. I almost hate all the mindless quests now,, go kill this many bats or bears and get 1 gold.. over and over just different things to kill.

But I don't think a game like that would work anymore, people are in to big a hurry to get to the top lvl. Cant say how many times I hear in games now... want to buy powerlvling between this lvl and that.... ue to be if people found out you powerlvld you wouldn't get a group.

But the memories are good to have.. people don't know what fun can be in these kind of games.

I was just discussing this with some folks on another board. It seems like in newer MMO's, you die constantly. And nothing happens. It's like character death is just another thing to have happen, not the ultimate failure that you try to avoid at all costs.

Of course, the idea of death being a bad thing has such a stigma around it that if you try to talk about a penalty or something, people flip out. But I kinda liked the feeling of places being dangerous and of having some skin in the game, so to speak.

Hell, there were a lot of places in EQ where just the adventure of exploring them was fun, because it felt dangerous, or it felt like I shouldn't even be there. And a lot of places I never even saw, because they ended up being too deadly altogether or just looked like too much risk, and I always wondered what was up there, or over there, or behind that door, etc.

Now in most MMO's you can just Leeroy into anything, anywhere, and it doesn't matter. Not only because players now are basically Superman and normal mobs can't even touch you, but also because if you do manage to die, you just respawn about a 10 second walk away with no adverse effects. Aside from maybe an absolutely pathetic token "armor repair" fee.

Not to mention that dungeons in most modern MMO's are instanced, balanced, strictly laid out mini-games essentially. You don't go exploring through them, you don't take a wrong turn into some awful room or get lost. You don't find something unexpected, or find yourself suddenly in over your head deep in Guk.

And yes, for the record, I have loaded up EQ emulators a few times in recent years and done those dungeon crawls and often felt that risk and danger, so it's not just ancient nostalgia talking. The games really are different. But no one wants that kind of game anymore. Meh.

It's not that I don't want it, it's that I don't have TIME for it.

Well, I'm not really talking about the people here specifically, of course. We all enjoyed those days, I'm sure.

I mean the "new" people, and the games that cater to them.

Not sure how to feel about the "old school" view including Iksar, Frogloks and Vah Shir, or characters in merchant mode.

Old school was looking at your spell book while meditating in West Karana and having a Hill Giant sneak up on you. Also running for safety to Freeport gates and realizing that some druid was kiting the guards.

Old school was camping treants in SK, druids around the teleport rings, or Najena for JBoots.

Old school was campin Highpass Hold for a polished granite tomahawk.

Old school was duel wielding two PGTs before they implemented the LORE system.
