Bootcamp the Mac, or run an instance of some Windows OS on the it (in Parallels or VMWare or the like). I imagine EQ is an old enough game that the small performance hit from the virtual machine won't really be noticeable.

Alternately you could get a Mac and you could both play on Al'Kabor (the Mac server), which is basically 2003 EQ (no expansions post-PoP, pre-nerf Rathe and PoTime, etc). Super low population, tons of hacks/bugs, and virtually no SOE support though.

Or you could save yourself $1000 and get a second PC.

indeed.

cost of a windows license and a vmware or parallels license = $200 at most.

Guildie of mine has a Mac and is often complaining about compatibility issues with a lot of games when he runs Windows on it. Not sure if he's doing something wrong or if this is relevant to EQ for it, but just saying. Seems better to me to avoid any potential annoyances and just sell the Mac and get a PC, but /shrug. If you're not aiming high and just want something that can run EQ should be able get one for absolute dirt cheap.

I find this very hard to believe, given the games that I play on my mac with a windows partition I boot to play them.

Not sure, maybe it just depends. I know he said he was having some issues with League of Legends crashing on him in particular, as well as Fallout 3 and CS Source. Maybe it's his machine, but I've heard similar stories with regard to Macs from time to time.

Playing in a windows VM while on a mac is just awful but if they go through bootcamp the issues are solved. Also it's important to remember that EQ doesn't take much to run you don't really need the latest hardware. When I played I had a 13 inch macbook with 1gig of ram and no dedicated graphics of any kind. I knew one guy when I played on Al'Kabor who used a Mac Mini he got off of craigslist for 250, it didn't perform great but it handled the game.

On to the issue of how to do this. If I really wanted to enjoy EQ for what it was I would play on the mac server. The mac version ends with PoP and it is awesome. It has everything people liked about EQ and none of the shit that came later. Now there are some issues ... like it was mentioned before there is no support for this game, at all. There is a way to contact gms you petition online then they email you then you set up an appointment to solve your issue! Outside of the lack of support the community isn't too big so if you do play there play classes that can help each other out.

It really just comes down to a minor issue of price (depending on the route taken it could be 40-500, I just hit craigslist ... and old G4 for 120, which could run eqmac) and what you find enjoyable in the game. If you want anything that happened after 2003 get an xp or 7 license if you want to enjoy the game the way it was when 70% of the users left get a mac.

I was referring to the fact that you told him to buy a mac. If you want to buy something so that both people could play on the same platform it would make more sense to buy a second PC because it would save you money rather than buying a second Mac like you suggested.

I suggested bootcamp or running a virtual machine, which is a damn site cheaper than buying a new pc. I gave the alternative of playing on Al'Kabor, which requires a mac (unless you want to do some spotty and roundabout hackintoshing).

Your suggestion just doesn't make sense from any angle, but whatever.

Hackintoshing gets easier every day, I did a Dell Mini 10v back when they first came out and now it's a joke compared to then. Hackintoshing my Desktop was even easier to do.

However, since your friend has a mac, running bootcamp is the easiest way to go.

hackintoshing is trivial if you have the right hardware.

amd processors are difficult. same thing with any non intel-northbridge motherboards.
