While the EQClassic project remains vaporware, there's a server built on EQEmu code up right now called Project 1999, and it's fully classic 1999-era EQ1, with all quests, mobs, zones, planes, etc implemented. It averages over 300 unique players a night (IP-based ban on two-boxing).

I'll probably give this a shot just because it is about time for winter break and EQ2 is in expansion limbo.
