I was just having this disucssion last night in WoW....again....with some newer MMO players. They all laughed and talked about how dumb and terrible it must have been to play EQ the way it was back then...I guess I just couldn't adequately explain to them why it was great.

Did you yell at them to get off your lawn? :)

Ok so i tried a mage and decided it sucked to not be able to snare runners....After 22 lvls of him and playing a Beastlord to 27 i rolled a necro again and got him to 40 in 2 days.

Question about the mercs. Is there any way to control them, like to not run in to a mob AS i pull it to not aggro the mobs around it, or they just that dumb?

They're pretty dumb overall yeah. Tag yourself as a puller in the group roles though, might help a bit.

Yeah if you tag yourself as a puller, wherever/whenever you do that... you essentially designate that spot as "camp" spot. Merc will not heal you until you come back to camp. You will want to be careful, though, as mercs are not smart enough to not heal you before you feign, so if you catch a heal... then merc will get trained.

On the other hand, everywhere I have read/heard says to use a melee merc until at least lvl 55 or so. They are utterly overpowered early on, at least until higher levels...

yeah well im using the melee merc and im boxing with my 65 shaman. Like that he can tank 5 or so mobs with minimal heals form the shaman after he slows.

The merc soloed the warden giant in Eastern wastes last night while i handled the adds. The giant was red to him by a few lvls cause it was red to me and i did not resummon him after i lvled a few.

Does anything speak volumes more about how utterly stupid SOE is this days than giving a 3 day trial to EQ and having the first day of the trial be on a patch day essentially making it a 2 1/2 day trial?

Not that 3 days is even worth the however long download it is to install.

And for the icing on the cake, servers will be down on the final day of the 3 day trial haha. If it were closer to April I would expect to see a giant APRIL FOOLS from SOE any moment. It's probably for the best that you leave your EQ client unpatched Cak.

Thanks Uti! :) Just starting on some Void stuff now, kind of nostalgic fighting in Blackburrow again. Can't wait to see Kithicor etc.

so is there any place to get a good low lvl pet focus item/aug for the 50's? have a sweeper for my necro but id like to try and find something for my beastlord now.

Also is it possible to do the lost dungeon stuff now solo or with 2 people w/o having to have 3 folks to start one up?

I have a sweeper on my trader I can give you if you want.

You still need 3 people for a LDON, although I do believe one of the three can be a merc.

ok so im playing on the rathe server since i had sold my old necro and i have a shaman on a 2nd account there. I go to tables to grind out some aa/exp and the fucking place is loaded with rangers pulling the entire castle and killing them at the same time.

Is it the same way on seventh? I hate rangers atm (.

I think it's safe to say that PoF C1/2 (tables) and DSH minotaurs are generally perma-camped by headshotting Rangers on most servers.

Can't blame them, though, I guess. If I could make 50+ AA an hour solo like that I'd be doing it too.
But yeah, for the rest of the classes, it's a bit wank.

Jump down to the bottom (you don't die anymore). Fight your way to the castle, and clear it over and over again. Mobs don't hit too hard, and they don't have a lot of HP. I started there at 65 and was doing 15+AA per hour. At 71 I was doing 8-9 AA per hour. At 72 most of the mobs go green, so get how ever many AA you want before then.

I thought I remember the gargoyles down there doing something really stupid, or at least having a shitload of HP.

If they did, they don't anymore. They melee for mid to high hundreds, and die in no time, especially if you have a tank merc. At 65 I would clear the castle, and the courtyard would respawn a little bit before I finished the top floor. At 71 I would be back down in the courtyard a couple of minutes before it started respawning.
