I am doing an old quest, not because I have to, but, just because I am finally high enough to solo HS, and to just finnish it.

I cannot get into the south door! I looked it up on Ala, is this still right?

One of the things I do miss about EQ1 is that the public had to figure out quests. While sometimes tedious, the discovery of where to go / what to do next / what exactly to say to a NPC was part of the fun of EQ. I remember once reading something from Verant / Sony a few years into EQ that there were still hundreds of items and quests that were undiscovered within the game, and this impressed me at the time.

Now everything has a yellow question mark over their heads, and quests are mind numbingly clear 95% of the time. ho-hum.

Yeah, like typing "I am one with the wall" backwards. How did someone actually figure that one out?

I think that's just nostalgia talking. Considering hardly anyone even did quests in EQ (other than Epic quests, or key quests), I really doubt you miss it as much as you think you do.

ps: they are exclamation points over heads, not question marks. ;)

Well, I was one of the weird ones I guess. I used to read Alla's a lot to look for unfinished quests, then go out and play for hours with the only goal of trying to find the next step in the quest in question.

a lot of people did quests Neesha, we did them for XP, faction and plat among the obvious item rewards. I know alot of people did their Stein of Moggok quest, the level 30 armor (darkforge, %T of ro, crafted, etc), jboots, solstice ear ring, SS/Kael armor, VP/ST/Planar keys/flags and that super important Kelethin mail you had to deliver on over to Freeport! Not gonna say everyone was completely immersed in the lore of the game, but saying "hardly anyone did quests cept epics" is pretty invalid. Especially once 2003 rolled over and everyone got over their 1.0's all together minus the clerics.

edit: ps: I had alot of fun following the quest lore, so dont feel weird fribs!

Like I said, I think it's nostalgia talking more than even you realize. Sure, everyone did the Jboots quest, but that's just one quest where you kill a rare dude, find a fast gnome, pay him, and get some fancy boots. And I know lots of people did the Stein quest as well as the armor quests. I wouldn't really call the SS/Kael armor "questing" either, since you just got a drop and turned it in. As I mentioned, most people did their Epic weapon quests and most people did the key quests, but other than that, not many people did quests. If you think back to all the quests you did in EQ (outside of armor and key quests), I doubt it would be that many. The game simply didn't handle questing like WoW, EQ2, etc. The majority of people played the game for reasons other than questing, whereas many people in WoW simply love the quests and that is their main reason for continuing to play the game. Anyway, I was just making an observation. I think we "remember" more than we actually experienced in EQ.

Alot of people did quests, but our definition of "quest" has changed a lot.
As Neesha mentioned, in EQ a "quest" was pretty much killing something, turning in a drop, and getting a reward.
In modern games that's changed somewhat, as we are now able to interact with the environment more.

But to me it was still questing. It may not have been as obvious as in modern games, but it's still questing.

PS - in addition to those epic quests, armor quests, and all of the items now known in EQ as "heritage" items (i.e. jboots, stein, etc.), I'd also add the shawl quest, earring of the solstice, Frostreaver rings, etc.. Can't forget those :)

everquest quests sucked nines

I mean all the best quests required you getting together an entire raiding party to run some zone that would take days to do, for items only a ranger would want
