Ok friends, I need some advice on some new authors. I've literally run rampant through the fantasy world the last 20 years and I've literally read most major authors and have run out, and since there won't be the new Sword of Truth series till next year I need a new author, so ideas?

Have you ever read Warhammer 40k books? I was never a huge fan but they are releasing the bigger series as Omnibus, 3-book editions. Some of the stuff from Dan Abnett, like Gaunt's Ghosts, are actually really good. Eisenhorn is another one I highly recommend.

Have you read Terry Brooks' stuff?

I'm not up on as many current fantasy authors as I should be, but I like this blog. It's got a lot of good scifi and fantasy reviews, and check out their "University of Fantasy" columns.

Charles Stross' "Laundry" and "Family Business" series are sort of modern fantasy and very well written.

For that matter so are all of his books, along with John Scalzi.

Have you read A Man of his Word by Dave Duncan? I don't hear many people talk about it, but I loved that series. The first book is called Magic Casement.

The Night Angel trilogy was pretty damn good. No Song of Fire and Ice, but still well worth the read.

Starts with "The Way of Shadows"

I'm a big fan of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series, but you may have already read it.

I just got the first book in that series on my Kindle-on-iPad. Can't wait to read it during my July vacation.

the latest dresden files book is "omfg awesome" -- some of them are sort of meh, but they're still pretty well written.

The Hollows series is also pretty good modern fantasy.

Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon series is pretty win, too, if you haven't read them yet.

The Night Angel Trilogy was one of the first things I read on my Kindle. I bought it for $9.99 back then, but it looks like the bundle is up to $19.99 now...

Picked this up as a free download for my kindle, loved it and will order the rest of the series once I am done reading War and Peace, at the 40% mark now, so just another few weeks of reading.

Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon series is pretty shit hot. I enjoyed them. Haven't gotten into the Dresden books yet.

Patrick Rothfuss did "Name of the Wind" which was awesome and the 2nd book will be out soon.

Joe Abercrombie wrote The First Law trilogy and I highly recommend them.

I went through all of Robin Hobb's books up until The Dragon Keeper and I wanted to strangle the main character she is so god damned annoying. So I haven't finished that yet. Hell, to be honest, Hobb's books tend to be repetitious as the main character worries, frets, and is concerned about the same shit he's been concerned about for the last 3 books. Though it finally got to me with Dragon Keeper.

I'm pretty sure you've read Glen Cook's Black Company, and if not you're a horrible person.

Looking forward to it with great anticipation.

Just finished re-reading Neil Gaiman's "American Gods". I strongly suggest it to anyone with even a passing interest in mythology.

His fare ranges from Neverwhere, to Stardust, to Mirrormask, and the first Books of Magic. Not to mention his multi-arc Sandman series.

I have not yet read Anansi Boys. That is next on my list.

Ooh, I hadn't heard of anansi, I'll have to look into it. Gaiman is a must read for me, whatever it is.

I also like Gaiman and Rothfuss.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark is the best modern fantasy I've read in recent years.

Most of Tad William's stuff is good, just avoid the "shadowmarch" series that he's currently writing. It's like hes barfing up the same characters and plot from other books and just renaming the characters and geography.

Man I read that series probably a dozen times as a kid. Good'n for the sword and sorcery fans.

Dune is fantastic.

Dune Messiah? Sucks balls.

Children of Dune/God Emperor of Dune? Pretty good, not as good as the first one.

The rest of the books can die in a fire. Though I'm ashamed to admit I liked the prequels written by Kevin J Anderson :(

Having recently read Dune for the second time, I've finally started in on the other books, specifically Paul of Dune. I'm about 80% of the way through and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Though I'm now less hopeful that Dune Messiah will be as entertaining given your comment..

Have you guys read 'The Science of Dune'? I only found out about its existence the other day and it sounds pretty cool.

It's been many years since I read the Dune books but as I recall the prequels had some pretty good back-story in them, like the Ixian and Bene Tleilax stuff.

For a change of pace, if you haven't checked out anything by Melanie Rawn, have a look.
Dragon Star trilogy + Dragon Prince trilogy are good reads and form a 6-book storyline.

Bit of a change from the action-packed fantasy literature out there these days (Salvatore, Goodkind, etc.), but it's pretty good.

Gosh this thread really takes me back, I'm going to have to dig up and re-read a lot of these.

If you want more fantasy, have you read the 14 OZ books? They aren't bad, and the originals with illustrations are available for free.

Also, if you are into "Urban Fantasy" try Ilona Andrews.
