I am sick of the reality shows, I just can't believe that so many people watch those shows. It seams like all the show I like are getting canceled.

Doll House = Canceled
Sarah Connor = Canceled
Swing Town = Canceled
South Land = Canceled then picked up by TNT for 5 more shows
Shield = ended
Dark Blue = Getting another season

Never heard of Swing Town or South Land. Never watched Dark Blue. The Shield had more then run its course.

I am glad to see that both Glee and Modern Family are doing well, apparently. For once a new show I like will survive. :p I thought for sure Glee would go the route of Pushing Daisies, but it has done surprisingly well.

Dollhouse second season blew. It started to become interesting after half a lame season. I don't get Whedon, who does he have to blame now? He had a second chance and blew it. It sucks, some of the episodes of that show were really good, and the story was actually interesting. Except when Eco was playing mommy and doing a bunch of lame shit. Oh well.

That could be, but reality TV needs to just go away

Why does reality TV need to go away? There are PLENTY of channels with programming on them. Do Cartoons need to go away? How about sitcoms? Reality TV is just another option and another source of entertainment for some people. If you don't like it, there's plenty of other stuff to keep you occupied. Personally, I enjoy watching a little reality TV now and then (Top Chef was great this year).

If not for reality TV, perhaps there would be no Kelly Clarkson and no Carrie Underwood in the music world. There would be no feel-good stories such as Paul Potts and/or Susan Boyle. Maybe the UFC wouldn't have discovered Forrest Griffin. Sure, there's quite a bit of shit out there (pretty much everything on VH-1, for instance), but I'll take the bad apples if we can get a few good stories in return. WIth 500 or however many channels I have on DTV, I think there's room for reality TV.

oops... I was going to say... that paragraph was a great argument for not having reality TV.

I don't have cable or satellite, because I rarely watch tv at home and couldn't justify the expense. NBC's move to put Jay Leno on 5 nights a week sucks for me, because I want to watch dramas and sitcoms, not variety shows. I'm hoping it fails spectacularly.

So you think the world is better off without sharing the joy of Paul Potts and Susan Boyle? You think the music world is better off without a Kelly Clarkson and a Carrie Underwood? You may not like either singer's music, but you can't deny that they are talented and have made quality music in their respective genres. As a music teacher, I'd think you could appreciate what a medium like American Idol has done for the industry.

ps: The Jay Leno argument is a different argument. It's just another [pointless] talk show, not a reality show.

My favorite show on TV is So You Think You Can Dance. Reality competition shows are fine. Reality shows like Jon and Kate plus 8 or whatever the FUCK it was called are terrible.

Next Food Network Star is another one - great show!

The point, obviously, is that bitching about it on the internet is considerably more appropriate for a misanthrope than just changing the channel.

I dont hate all of mankind, just most of it; l but I did try changing the channel nothing else was on.

I have DTV as well, and it seems like there is 500 channels of nothing on, I do understand why networks love "reality" TV is cheep for them to make and there lots of people that watch that rubish.

Reality TV isn't going anywhere - it's too damn cheap. You can send a small film crew to follow around D-list celebrities for less than a million bucks and have a full season of TV. For the cost of 1 season of Seinfeld, you could fill VH1's entire fall line up. But, insulting it makes us feel smartz :)

Cancel your cable, get Netflix and watch hand-picked movies and older TV series.

You could always multitask. Or better yet, pick some good shit to watch instead of going with the little 'fad' shows like Dollhouse and Terminator. I can't imagine anyone really believed Terminator would stick around, much less yet another Whedon vehicle. There's plenty out there worth watching. Dexter, Curb, Mad Men, The Office, Community, I'm sure there's a CSI that is good, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Nip/Tuck, Sons of Anarchy, Modern Family, Californication, Entourage..... I am sure others can tell you more quality TV to watch/Tivo/Netflix/download on demand

This one jumped the shark about 5 episodes ago. It was sad, as it was a favorite of mine, but they lost their mojo and haven't been able to get it back.

Necro, sounds like you don't want me to post all the time :-), Thank you for the advice.

SOA is awesome, but not on till September again.
Tried to watch The Office last year but did not really care for it, heard its much better this year.
Big Bang is not bad
How I met your Mother, never watched it
Mad Men, never heard of it.
CSI is OK
Law and Order, is not bad
Curb, Califonication, Entourage are all on like HBO, I don't get that can that be watched on line?

Everything can be watched online.

Californication is Showtime, by the way (as is Dexter). The beauty of Netflix is you can stream (or rent) most TV shows to watch. If you're 4 seasons behind on Dexter, just get it from Netflix and start with Season 1. Season 1 is pure awesome, and you will be VERY hard-pressed to name any series of any TV show that is as good as Season 2 of Dexter. If you're the squeamish type, you may not care for the show. But for everyone else, you'll love it.

Matter of fact, the best character on that show is Cameron. heh.

I honestly couldn't pick a 'best character' on that show. They are all pretty terrific. From the kid who just wants a belt for his birthday to Ed O'Neill's character. It's just a great, great show. The bike episode was classic.

I am soooooo glad Dollhouse got cancelled. Quite possibly one of the worst plots I have seen on TV in several years.

On the other hand, I'd have to agree with Mr. Devil that reality TV is horrible and always has been. Since the dawn of it, I have not seen a single reality show that I can stand more than 5 minutes of without wanting to take the shotgun to the TV. Not only are most of them boring to watch, but more often than not they betray the very premise by which they are founded - "reality" - by scripting everything, editing anything out that makes it seem anything close to "real", and by faking shit altogether.

You should watch the ones that actually require some talent. Project Runway and Top Chef come to mind. It is less about the people and more about what they can create, which tends to be why I like them.

I can appreciate those like that - they actually seem to stick to the premise that they base their show on. I've watched parts of episodes of Top Chef, and just couldn't get into it. I didn't see the entertainment value in it, and the personalities seemed bland - but that's probably just a taste issue for me, and I can't put down someone for enjoying a reality series that's a little more genuine.

I guess my main beef is with reality shows that don't do that and are completely fake/massive editing/don't have anything to do with "reality"... of which there seem to be far too many.

Most of them just feel like souped up soap operas with horrible camerawork tossed in to make it feel real.

Keep in mind you'll have more invested in the show if you watch it from the beginning. Top Chef has (had) some pretty great personalities but if you just hopped in and saw a bunch of strangers cooking vegetarian food for Natalie Portman, you probably would be wondering what all the hype was about. Likewise, if you jumped into Project Runway (this past season sucked, by the way) and saw a dude make a crappy garment and get booted, you probably wouldn't think twice about it because you wouldn't know that he had previously won 2 of the last 3 weeks and was considered the favorite.

By the way, I think I like shows like Project Runway and Top Chef because the contestants don't become wannabe celebs after the fact. When the show is over, they go on with their lives and you don't really see or hear from them again outside of the show. My real problem with reality shows is when you get these nobodies, put them on the show, and then we're supposed to care about them after the fact. Most of them (in the case of VH-1 shows, in particular) are douchebags and become pseudo-celebs simply for being douchebags. The shows become more about "how can I get noticed?!" than anything else. With a very few exceptions, Top Chef and Project Runway remained about what the contestants could produce, not about how they behaved.

CSI: has really gotten much better now that Laurence Fishburne is on the show.

If you do like the cop/crime shows you may like Criminal Minds or The Mentalist (yes I know I blasted the show when it first came out, but it is a lot better now)

Mad Men and Breaking Bad is IMO the best stuff on TV now.

I haven't had an opportunity to watch Modern Family yet (hasn't been on the schedule for me)

I do like NCIS (don't like the new on in LA)

CSI: Miami is done for me. They have gotten too deep in camera and lighting tricks that makes it beyond painful to watch.

I'll watch CSI: NY if there is nothing else on the DVR that I want to watch.

Finally, I guess my one reality show that I do like is Top Chef. This season they got away from having the contrived drama between the chefs and let the food and the stress of the show take the emotional lead.

Yeah, you're right. Honestly, the only one I think is even somewhat weak is the wife. Manny and his mom were annoying at first but they've really grown on me. Ed O'Neal is frickin hilarious. He's a great sitcom actor, I'm glad to see he has a spot again.
