Car audio went from potentially cool to annoying too quickly. In auto shop I remember working on someone's modded Cadillac. When you turned the ignition on the doors would lock and a voice would say "goodbye Mr. Bond".

Now all the modules can do is beep.

Why not put governors on all vehicles so they can't go above 65mph?

Because in some places, like the great state of New Mexico, speed limits can go up to 75.

Well eventually cars will be computer/robot controlled so we shouldn't have to worry about accidents and fatalities anymore. Of course this probably won't happen in our lifetimes, but you never know. And if you don't believe me, there is some highway in California where they are testing computer controlled cars on a highway lined with sensors and other gizmos that interact with the computer and get it to where it wants to go. It is still in its infantile stage, but in the next few millenia will probably be here.

That is, if we all survive December 2012 :)

My boss has an old seatbelt end he cut off the belt and keeps stuck in his seatbelt latch to keep it from beeping.

I hate wearing my seatbelt, but now wear it on occasion for the simple reason I have gotten tired of being pulled over and getting slapped with a $180 seatbelt tax.

Back to the texting while driving issue. From Allstate:
Quote:
When you text and drive...
* It takes your eyes off the road on average of five seconds at a time. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of a football field - completely blind.1
* It's like driving after having 4 beers.2
* It makes us 23 times more likely to crash.3
* It results in car crashes that kill an average of 11 teens each day.4
* It's results in 330,000 distracted driving injuries every year.5

People who drink four beers have trouble driving home? o_O I've consumed a six pack and driven home completely sober, heh.

Sounds like you need a breathalyzer on your car...

Having a pocket breathalyzer already, I know when I've had too much :P

Six beers and I blow 0.06, which is 0.02 below the legal limit in GA.

they are talking average teen... you are not average Van.

I bet if you had four beers when you were 18 I bet you would be closer to .1 than .06

eh... I'd been drinking beer since I was 16 by that point, so maybe maybe not.

Truth. Seatbelt laws aren't there to save lives, they are there to tax otherwise law abiding citizens. Or an excuse to harass the individual and his/her passengers.

I only started wearing a seatbelt about 12 years ago. When I first started, I welcomed the "annoying" ding.

Maybe I'm part of the problem. If I'm at a friend's place, I might drink 4-6 beers over the course of 3-4 hours. I drive home. Honestly, I wouldn't have the first clue if I'm legal or not.

If you shotgun 6 beers, unless you are super-liver-boy, you're going to be over .1 I would think. But, if you are just hanging out and drink at a fairly normal pace and have some tolerance, you're probably OK. I'm guessing in Van's case, that's 6 over 2 hours. Still probably a bit much, but here's to alcoholism :)
