My home was severely vandalized this weekend. Spray painted vulgarities all over our siding, garage and drive way. Condoms glued to the house and various other very detailed damages. The police are likely labeling this as a hate crime against my daughter. The attacks were very personal and directed at her. Phallic symbols were painted all over as well. A white van was seen speeding off at 4am Sunday morning, and because the attacks were so personal, the list of people it could be is narrowed dramatically.

There is no book telling you how to react to something like this. I found it odd that anger didn't even enter my frame of mind, only sorrow for the poor son-of-a-bitch when we find out who did this.

Bah, that kind of crap sucks....even moreso when it's aimed at some poor kid. I am curious however.....how is vandalizing your house a hate crime?

I thought people labeled them hate crimes when the motive for the crime is supposedly related to a specific group. i.e. when someone shoots a black guy because he's black. If someone spray paints racial slurs or something similar, it gets labeled a hate crime, because it's patently obvious that it's motivated by their dislike for a specific group.

At least that's my understanding.

As for all crimes being hate crimes, I dunno. I'm pretty sure I could shoplift or jaywalk without hating anyone at all.

The graffiti was gender based attacks against my daughter. I was initially surprised the police labeled this as such (given that we are Caucasian)... but in all sincerity if it gets them working on the case more, I am ok with it.

As a new homeowner I wish you much luck and swiftness in your house restoration.

The garage door has been replaced (it was that bad) and the driveway has been acid washed. We will be getting new lights and siding before the month is out. Just need an estimate on the retaining wall they painted and I should be set. Thank goodness I didnt switch to a $1,000 deductible to save a couple bucks this year.

Kudos to you Rokhan for being intelligent when I'm sure every bone in your body wants to wreck shop. I'm very sorry this happened, and pray the system actually does take care of it.

Thanks! The reality is that this was likely done by a teenage girl. I can visualize myself slapping her, but not to the point of feeling satisfied she learned anything. The damage estimate is about $4k now. *sigh*

This happened to my family around 1980, but it was racially motivated. A small group of teenage boys were caught, but they had almost zero punishment. It was about the same amount of damage in dollars, so accounting for inflation, pretty bad (parents had to pay out of pocket too). I was horribly harrassed and physically assaulted by two of these teenagers for years after. I was about 6 at the time so I wasn't really able to defend myself.

I wanted to add this, just to warn you to protect your daughter. I lived with it for years never telling my parents, because they told me if I got them in anymore trouble they would do X. X was always something really nasty, like kill my dog or something similar.

Please try to make sure your daughter is talking to you. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through that kind of crap.
