Quote:
A recent college graduate is suing her alma mater for $72,000 -- the full cost of her tuition and then some -- because she cannot find a job.

Quote:
As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record. But Monroe's career-services department has put forth insufficient effort to help her secure employment, she claims.

"They're supposed to say, 'I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right -- can you interview this person?' They're not doing that," she said.

Quote:
Asked whether she would advise other college graduates facing job woes to sue their alma maters, Thompson said yes.

"It doesn't make any sense: They went to school for four years, and then they come out working at McDonald's and Payless. That's not what they planned."

Holy hell, this woman has a huge sense of entitlement! Especially in this economy, it's amazing that anyone could be so naive.

I certainly didn't expect my university to get me a job. I expected them to give me the education I needed so I could find a job myself. And that's what I did.

So she's stuck in debt and a C+ grade point average. Of course, she won't take any of the blame. :violent1:

Three month job search, or in other words she waited until graduation to start looking? A 2.7 isn't remotely competitive in a business program. From that one may also infer she didn't bother to get any certifications.

Too bad, so sad. Find a grad school that will take you and hide there for another two years. :P

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. It really depends on what, if any, claims the college made that it hasn't lived up to and what guarantees of support they stated they'd provide and failed to. In one article I read she was bitching that the job program wasn't doing enough to help her find a job.

I didn't think her claim was valid just based on what I read in the article, it sounded like she didn't follow through at all and just expected them to line up shit for her...but I could see where someone *might* have a claim against a school.

But I lean towards thinking hers is an empty one. And her attitude of 2.7 plus 'good attendance' is laughable. No one cares about attendance.

4. What does the Office of Career Advancement do?
We assist you in all of your career planning efforts. We provide individual career counseling services, conduct workshops on resume writing, interviewing, networking, career planning, etc., locate full and part - time employment opportunites, coordinate an internship (co-operative education) program, provide career assessment, and host a number of on campus recruitment events and job fairs throughout the year.

What the Monroe College website says about their "Office of Career Advancement".

Is there a lawsuit there? Well, this is America, there's a lawsuit EVERYWHERE. But really, she just sounds like a whiny idiot who thought that College = Millionaire or something.

PS: 2.7, lol.

Most if not all college career counseling services require the student to be proactive. They don't just hand out employment. Just like in real life.... you're far more likely to get an interview if you call the company a day or two after sending your resume to check on its status.

Maybe it gives the company a warm fuzzy for feeling wanted. But more likely the HR person handling it would rather pull one resume they know will have a high probability of accepting the position, versus a random college list. The path of least work.

Well, I promise you that NO college career placement department will guarantee to get you a job. She apparently feels that there WAS a guarantee, and she's legally owed to have them find her a job.

Of course, they could be lax in their work ethic to help graduates. But I'm not sure how this person would know that, other than waiting for 3 months without having people beat down her door to hire her.

If a judge spends more than 10 minutes even considering this case for trial, it will have been a tragic waste of taxpayer money.

GPA also doesn't really matter based on what a few of my professors have been telling the students at SDSU Business Admin School. They say most of what matters is your interview, and how to get an interview (Like some of you sad, call HR, network, etc).

The person suing just didn't do enough.

There's a difference between 1.0 and 2.7.

Usually for B.S./B.A. they look at GPA, and for M.S. and PhD they look at where you went.

Indeed!

It's good to see my lil bro can differentiate between numbers. I'm sure you can also find the difference between 2.7 and 3.0ish. ;P

*waits for the next contradiction*

Depends on for what, many um softer degrees (BA) they don't look at GPA at all, which is disappointing. (I'm such a grade whore).

Give her the money back and revoke the diploma. Then sue her ass for for deformation of the schools reputation for being such a horrid post-student.

I think at this point, she's likely to have earned fame (or rather, infamy) in her local area as a malicious grudge-holder, and no companies will want to hire her in fear that she'll just sue them.

It does make me giggle that she almost *expects* some fruit from her diploma. Shit, I know people with PhD's who ended up doing manual labour because their particular job market wasn't overly busy. That's the risk you take with college/university - there's no guarantee you'll find a job. We all know it, and accept it. What's her problem?

PS - maybe instead of using e-service to email spam companies with her resumes, she should show up in person and hand them her resume? Call me old school, but I find companies respect that more than a voiceless, faceless email.

Out of complete curiousness, do we know her nationality? I don't think the link above said anything in reference to it.

The article says she's from the Bronx. It seemed like she's an American.
Do you think she's international student or immigrant for some reason?
