ok I'm sure many of you already knew about this, but I'm discovering it for the first time and I'm loving it:

www.abandonia.com

This is a repository of abandoned games free to download. It's a very large collection, and with DosBox and a little time you can get them working on your computer.

So far, I've found several several games that I have fond memories of from my childhood. Two stand out so far:

Buck Rogers and the Countdown to Doomsday-- this one occupied me and my best friend at the time all weekend for many weekends. I LOVED this game!

BoulderDash-- I had even forgotten the name of this one-- I didn't think I would ever see it again. I haven't downloaded it yet, but I remember spending hours and hours playing this one, and I can't wait to try it again after all this time.

Take a look at the site-- there's a LOT of old stuff there. I hope it puts a smile on your face like it has me!

Ooo I'm gonna have to check that out, thanks for posting that. I may move this over to the games section in a bit (even though I know it's a rave) to make it more accessible there, like after a week or so here.

Doesn't matter to me! Move it where you like.

They have all the X-Com games there too, although that's not as old as some of the others I mentioned. X-Com was easily my single favorite game in my life until Everquest came around.

Lots of good stuff under the RPG section:

All 3 Bard's Tale games

3 Dragonlance (Krynn) games

a bunch of Eye of the Beholder

the first 5 Might and Magic

a boatload of Ultima and its spinoffs

Wizardry 7

Wasteland (the precursor to Fallout)

God damn it. They don't have Ravenloft: Strahd's Revenge or Ravenloft: The Stone Prophet. I spent forever on those damn games.

Might check out the Toril (Forgotten Realms) ones though. They are the Eye of the Beholder series. Might be good.

Oh, damn no edit. I've been looking for something that would let me play those games on Windows XP's little stupid dos thing they have and can't find it. There something I have to download to let me play those games on a newer OS?

All the games that need a DOS emulator have a link right on each download page where you can get it.

I just noticed that a lot of the games listed on the site aren't actually available. Looks like they do periodic checks to see if the game is actually being sold in some form, and pull the files if they are.

The Bard's Tale and a lot of the LucasArts games are being sold as part of a bundle on Amazon, so they're not available.

The good news is I got DOSbox working on my MacBook, so for the bunch I did download I should be good to go.
