Considering most franchises don't honor coupons, deals, and some don't even have new menu items, I don't think they're losing too much.

It was on the news here in Southern CA, some KFCs got hammered with this shit. So here's the skinny...

They're gonna honor the coupons. KFC is shipping out LOTS more chicken to cover it, but ALL Oprah coupons expire on 5/16. So if you can get them...they'll crap out then. They also showed the coupons on television, and some people had some shit ass copies of them haha, that apparently KFC was accepting.

So some of you enjoy free lunch til the 16th.

If this is a scam/shenanigans... I am very surprised that Oprah would be a part of it. I mean it was on her official website, not some fan one. You would *think* that there would have been some sort of legitimacy on it, especially dealing with two well known entities like KFC and Oprah. I guess I am surprised, I honestly thought this was legit the entire way and that it was a great promotional tool for KFC and continued philanthropy for Oprah.

How can you not foresee the popularity of four free KFC lunches for anyone who lives in the United States? Especially during this economic time that we live in? I know KFC isn't the greatest thing out there, but it is a well known name brand... it is a decent size meal... and it is free!

Which is why I asked in my initial post a thought about how much money this is either (a) costing Oprah/whomever is paying for this, or (b) being lost by KFC because of this promotion. I am sure they are taking some hit for giving all of this away, unless she truely is compensating them for this.

Generally isn't the idea to give away something free so people come into your restaurant and spend money? Give away a side or the chicken, but not the whole meal!

I decided to take up this offer today (there is a participating KFC close to my office) and you would not believe the rush there! I had to wait about 10 min to get my food. I was polite and did not cause a ruckus. There were so many people complaining about the free food. The three people that were in front of me in line all complained "I want a breast and thigh not thigh/leg." "I don't want potatoes and coleslaw" "This doesn't come with a drink?" then they'd complain when it took "too long" to get their free food (they didn't even buy a beverage). I bought a drink took what they were offering (thigh/leg with potatoes, coleslaw and biscuit) waited my time and had a decent lunch. It was ok. It was fast-food. It was still greasy but no that bad.

I have two KFC near me. One of them I will never go back to again because the manager and cashier told me the cost of a meal was 7 dollars, when billboard sign behind them specifically stated it was 5 dollars (and tax in AZ isn't 40%). The other one, even when I am the only person in the restaurant (which is usually the case) it takes a good 10+ minutes for me to get the food. I drive by that one twice the last two days, and I have seen at least eight cars in the drive thru. I can only imagine if it takes me 10+ minutes as the only customer, how long that eighth car in line is waiting...

It's a new kind of chicken at KFC that they're marketing as 'healthier' and it's the flame broiled or whatever, roasted...whatever kind, to compete against Boston Market, El Pollo Loco and every other 'healthier' chicken place.

AFAIK no one was buying it, ppl go to KFC for KFC stuff, this new stuff, meh. So they were already giving away like a 4 or 6 piece set free...with the purchase of every 8 piece.

Giving this away is perfect, it gets people trying the chicken, and if they buy a drink that's one of the bigger money makers for any fast food place...AND even if they don't like the chicken, the other stuff might remind them 'hey I should come to KFC more often!'. Or if they don't like it, they'll buy something else for lunch maybe.

Whether or not that 'wins' them anything...depends a lot on their product. This shit is more free publicity than they could pay for through regular means. Yes, they're still paying for it with 'free chicken'...but an ad campaign to get this many people in would have cost SO much more I bet.
