Still not sure what is sad about it.

People lead public and private lives. The amount they intermingle depends on the circumstances.

While I am sure you get kicks with the whole "I am so liberated" position, the fact is you repress behaviors just like anyone else.

I let farts go in public, but I repress them so they come out silently, and I walk away.

You are such a fake and must be miserable in real life.

If you were a real man you would fart loudly instead of hiding your true self.

Always living with the idea that you have a personal "brand" to uphold for the sake of a career isn't something you necessarily always need to adhere to to keep moving up the ladder, but at the same time it's silly to suggest that you would "always" be "yourself" and just sacrifice good opportunities for - in some cases - a pointless principle.

One need look no further than the example of the teacher who posted pictures of herself drunk on myspace and lost her job over it. She had nothing to hide. She wasn't ashamed of what she had done. And yet there was a tangible, needless loss. What purpose does "being yourself" serve if there's nothing to be gained by still posting the pictures?

Now, I'm not saying that she's a bad person or even did anything wrong by posting those pictures being a school teacher - in fact, I think the school board was out of line in firing her over that. But, if there's a an easy choice of keeping your job versus taking down a few pictures, I don't see how you're making some grand sacrifice of principle by taking them down. Course, she could have been standing up and participating in a little "civil disobedience" herself, but I doubt it. Even if that were the case, there are still other ways to stand up for such a cause. If the cause of preventing firings from drunk pics can be considered a worthy enough cause to go to such lengths in the first place, anyway...

I knew we could find some common ground.

Anyway, I always hated the argument of "Well, what have got to hide?" whenever people opposed the Patriot Act. Our lives might not come to an end if everything private got out, but there are still things we are *not* ashamed of that for various reasons we don't want to be made available to just anyone.

I wasn't arguing that people shouldn't keep anything private, or should invite examination of their private lives. Quite the opposite, actually. It really bothers me that we're letting employers and businesses peer into our private lives and control what we do, if in any tiny way.

But, and I keep harping on this I know, when you find people doing things like cutting off perfectly normal, acceptable conversations when someone else enters the room because they're afraid someone might overhear them talk about their hobbies, something's not right.

As for the MySpace picture thing...that's really disturbing, too. I'm almost (But not quite) tempted to say that we oughta pass a law barring employers from making firing decisions based on those sorts of materials. But I know that'd be hell to really write and enforce. It's just a shame that we almost have to be afraid of our own lives or else some douchbag might fire us or worse. I guess I'm stubborn enough to not want to give in to that.

Maybe it's a misguided principle on my part. I dunno. I absolutely HATE anyone telling me what to do with myself, or how to conduct myself outside of basic social graces. I was the kid always getting in trouble in school because I told the administrators to get lost when they told me where I could and couldn't go for lunch and such. =D

Who would have guessed that that same troubled high school kid would one day grow up to be a socially awkward adult? :axe:
