I love this comment.

No, really? Making it sound like changing a phone number is something that's never been done before.

Yeah no shit. Hell, if this works out, people SHOULD be able to port their numbers over like they do with a normal carrier...

Cellphone carriers might still be needed - I only see something that eliminates LD routing.

I've been waiting for Grand Central to take on some of these new features for a while.

You could already make outbound calls, though it was a bit of a PITA.

My account hasn't been upgraded yet, so no first-hand info about new changes.

Do you need a high speed internet connection to use this, or can an Internet phone of some kind do this on it's own?

For example, I currently do not have Internet access at home. If I bought the right kind of phone, could I cancel my cell phone service and still use something like this?

It's not a replacement for Skype. It still requires a phone.

I have to apologize, but I don't understand how that answers my question. It's not the phone that I'm asking about-- I was asking if I needed separate Internet access to use this service.

I'm feeling a little Internet noobish atm :(. Maybe my question is blatently obvious?

My account just got converted, so I have some better information now.

You can perform basic operations and change some settings through the phone, but you do need internet access to set up the account and access the more advanced functions. An internet-capable phone should be more than sufficient for 90% of them.

There's a mobile version of the website at https://www.google.com/voice/m. There, you can send SMS, make calls, browse your contacts, manage your phones, etc.

I may be misunderstanding your question, but if it's "Does this let me make calls through the computer," the answer is no. The service is centered around the phone and getting the calls through that you want. In fact, after you sign up and set it up, you could probably get away with never using a computer for it again, if you wanted to.

ahh, that last paragraph I think answers it. See, I do NOT have internet access, and I was wondering if I could use the service with an Internet *capable* phone of some kind without having to get internet access. I can do any setup I need to do at my work (where I am now).

I'm sure they'll come out with a client for any phone running google android.

I highly doubt any cell phone company will let you use this service on their phones without some sort of hackery though.

Maybe it's the age thing but...
I'd rather go without pussy than go without internet access...

I work ridiculous hours. I'm almost never home. After a while, I decided it wasn't worth it. If I really really need to get on the Internet at home, I can leech off a neighbor's unsecured wireless connection.

I had a client on my iPhone called Grand Dialer, which was made by a third party. It looks like there should be some new client software soon.

All you have to do to make outgoing calls with Google Voice is call your own number and follow the prompts. It's much easier.
