I'd personally like to.

Though I will say this -- if he was looking at a review unit, it could simply be a software problem that can be fixed.

Got my nook yesterday. I played with it a little bit, and I will review it more after I've had some time to evaluate it all.

I've never used Kindle before, so my opinion is entirely based upon just using the nook. So far I will agree with the NYT review in that the touch screen is a bit slow for my taste (trying to get it to turn back on while reading a book can take a few taps, and you have to be careful that you don't accidentally touch something else). Going from menu option to menu option can be a bit slow, but not unbearably so.

Searching for books on it is a bit painful. I'd love an option to search for all "free" books, for example, but I can't. Part of it is quite possibly my connection...my house has awful cell service, and the connection drops a lot. I tried connecting to wifi, but it didn't seem to work. Probably my fault...I'll work with it more later.

The "three second" page change the reviewer talked about: It didn't seem to be quite that long. There is a brief wait while you switch pages, but it's not bad. When I say brief, I mean like counting to one-one-thousand, and it was a new page.

And ALL of these problems, imo, can be fixed by software updates. Things I like so far:

I like the smoother appearance of the nook vs. the kindle. I like not having that huge clunky keyboard. (I used the nook's touchscreen keyboard a few times. It's a little slow to pop up on the screen, but you can enter it in quicker than it appears and the text will catch up a second or so behind you. It didn't give me any problems.)

I like that I can upload my own pdfs. I know Amazon now has that feature, but when the nook was ordered, it didn't have that ability.

The removable sd card...I love this option.

Overall, I doubt it's much worse than the kindle. And with software upgrades, it'll be better, imo.

You mean the kindle app on your $400 ipad? Or your itty-bitty screened iphone?

So by calling your Kindle "free" you're either being sarcastic or disingenuous?

Hmm, tricky one... I guess, merely pointing out that the Kindle is more than a piece of hardware.

How does "my Kindle was free" = "a Kindle is more than a piece of hardware"?

All you suckers paying monthly fees for satellite radio are stupid. You could have had it for free.*

* With the purchase of a 2011 Mini Cooper for the low price of $28,000.

Lol, yeah. This message board cost me $999, the cost of my laptop, and damn it, the expense of my cable internet subscription as well. And shit, I couldn't browse this website without electricity, so let's add that too!

it boggles my mind that people pay this much money for one of these things. i'm glad the people who have and enjoy them do, but there are so many better things i would spend $250 on.

Good in a pinch, but the mac/pc versions aren't something you can really read on a bus/train, and the iphone/blackberry apps are a little...small... for regular reading.

Merely pointing out that the Kindle is not a piece of hardware. It's a service. And you can have a kindle without having the Kindle device. I bought my iPad for lots of reasons. Mostly, to replace my casual surfing at home, to have something to use while on the bus (I recently became a clean air commuter) and to have in meetings. Typing on it now, in fact, from the bus.

The Kindle app was added value. To me, it's free. It goes back to my old post on this topic that the real value is the syndication and distribution that Amazon can do, not the shitty piece of hardware.

So how does the iPad do on a nice, sunny day? Any glare? I know I can't read jack on my laptop on a bright day outside, but I can read my nook with zero issues. (I'm not being sarcastic...I'm truly curious.)

It works fine. I avoid doing much of anything in direct sunlight, though. I've used it at my kids soccer game before I got yelled at by the wife and I didn't have a problem seeing content. I tend to use it most where it wouldn't be an issue anyway. I use it for 2 hours every day on the bus with direct light and it's a dream.

Where it shines for book reading is in bed. I can dial down the brightness to such a level that it doesn't wake up my wife, and I don't have to use an unwieldy book light. The app itself can be configured to have white text on a black background, black on sepia and white on black.

Plus, I've taken it to meetings and can write an entire email without the shortcuts you have to take when writing on a blackberry, iPhone, etc.

The last thing I'll say and again, where service agnostic devices shine, is that I can use kindle, iBooks and other book reading apps on one device, rather than being tied to one service functionality, distribution list, etc.

Yes, very nice. For some friends over at Kindle boards this will be their new toy. On top of their K1, K2, DX, iPad, Sony, and Nook.

My father picked up an Augen (a Kmart rip off) for 89 bucks. It's not too shabby. Color screen, backlit, wifi and internet browser. Don't know specs but I though people might be interested in an alternative as he seems happy with it.

The Augen isn't an e-book reader, it's a stripped down Android tablet.

(not saying I wouldn't use one, but it's not an apples to apples comparison, and the reviews of the Augen aren't completely favorable either)

I don't know too much about it, to tell you the truth. But it has some decent ebook shit, and he's been using it almost exclusively to read ebooks. I honestly couldn't tell you what an e-book reader does that would be worth the extra expense.

Out of curiosity, can a Kindle read .cbr files?
