What are gas prices doing where you live? At the local Wal-Mart it is $3.28 for regular.
I had to pinch myself.

This seems similar to the "how much is gas where you live" thread in general.

I know I don't get our financial systems, but it seems really odd to me that we're in the middle of this big economic crisis, we did a bailout and the markets tanked anyway and are in bad shape....and yet the price of oil is dropping and the dollar is getting stronger.

These things do not add up properly to me.

The dollar buys more, hence it is stronger. One of the fucked up quirks of a depression. If prices are very high, the unit of money value is very low (seen in every economic depression but best highlighted by German pre WWII and the like where their unit of money kept falling insanely til you needed a wheelbarrow full to buy bread).

Once prices fall though, the dollar buys more, therefore it's stronger. People have less money to buy things, therefore the value of items drops. Dollar is stronger.

I know it seems weird, but that's how it works.

As to gas prices...part of the reason is that the reasons for the price inflation (availability due to the hurricanes) has passed, so the price drop would have happened anyway. But it's also due to the economy as well as other factors.

Oil was in part getting more expensive because the dollar was weak, so it should go lower as the dollar value goes up. North Carolina is around the top on gas prices right now, most of the south east is for that matter, because of the shortages due to the pipeline running below 40% capacity from the hurricane.

Oil is down because of global recession fears. During a recession oil usage drops as less fuel is used and there is a lower volume of manufacturing (petrol products). Lower demand forcasted = lower price now.

It has to do with in part, what Tarot said, but mainly with the demand. Demand is down because people are not driving as much, no demand=no sales=surplus on hand. Plus Oil is down below $80/bbl now. There is a benchmark I saw someone talking about the other night that has to do with miles driven/month that the oil companies use to set gas prices. That benchmark is down almost 20% from 6mos ago.

Probably gonna be a buck fifty in a month or so and no one's going to be able to afford it, lol. Deflation can get pretty bad (see: the great depression).

I am definitely not a commodities expert, but the "commodity bubble" has burst, for a couple reasons:
1. Oil has been over-priced due to speculation
2. A global slow down means significantly less demand, thus lower prices

Note #2 - this is why if the US committed to drilling, prices would drop as well.

Enjoy it while it lasts. I haven't really looked at the dollar compared to other currency, although I am surprised to hear it is getting stronger. The only explanation is that foreign governments are going to be more adversely affected than the US by this crunch. Dunno.

The dollar is getting stronger because foreign markets, despite their blustering, are in worse shape than ours.

I was watching the news last night and Harrington Texas is down to $1.98, and several others in the midwest are right at $2.00....so it's coming down fast.

Can buy a tank for 400$ that stores 1000 gallons. My parents own a farm and did that recently for their cars..

Odd I know but it seems to work for them.
