Hopefully they can keep the preaching out of the series. Got really laborious towards the end of the series.

And I'm not fond of the actress playing Kahlan. /shrug Not how I envisioned her. I'm sure I'll get over that, though.

I have mixed feelings about this series more than almost any other I know of. I remember reading the first book and loving it. It was everything I wanted from a fantasy novel. Really really great. Then there was some good ones and another one around the middle that I really loved... then right after that, every book was absolute drek. It was like he totally gave up on the story and just used it as a vehicle to promote his self rightous world view.

Some of the best and worst of fantasy... If the show sticks to the first sort, it could be grand!

I doubt anyone really gave your original comment any real thought, anyway. All books are long and all screen adaptations, big and small, need to be cut down.

I loved Wizard's First Rule. The rest are really throwaway books you read when you have nothing else to read.

GRRM HBO, though... Man, I am feeming for that shit.

George RR Martin pisses me off with his GODDAMN FOOTBALL BLOG. I had to unfriend him because I wanted to stab him. He's a complete football nut, meanwhile I want to know what the fuck is going on with his books and when he's going to turn off the damned telly and start writing more.

Someone had the best icon though, "Every time you ask him about when the next book will be out, he kills another Stark" (or something like it.)

I ended up abandoning the series, because it feels like its going to be another Wheel of Time bullshit.

I love the fire and ice series, but for one caveat; stop with the goddamn family crests already. I would be completely happy with a tad less atmosphere if I could get through the whole next book without a description of a tabard or coat of arms. Christ, I don't care if it's a leaping stag or a shitting stag... get on with it.

I think the interesting thing will be to see if it's early Xena style(and late Xena style), that took itself overly serious and became kind of stupid, or if it takes the Hercules(and part of the way through Xena) campiness that was there on purpose.

Who knows, maybe they can find the mid-line and make it more serious without being dumb.

Terry is over seeing hte entire thing, if you google the series name there's tons of interviews with him and the production staff they plan on doing this as real as possible especially with todays technology.

I've worried about that, too. But if he sticks to what he's said on his "Not a Blog," then it should be about seven books.

And I just skip over the football posts...I keep him as a friend because of the occasional update on the tv and book series. It does get frustrating, though, because he admits he's late on the book.

Just an fyi for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but there's a 10min preview up on youtube of the Seeker.

Don't have a link handy, but it's not overly difficult to find.

I'm with the other posters in that the casting choices (age and looks) for both Richard and Kahlan seem odd, but we'll see how it goes.
The character playing Zedd also didn't seem what I had expected.
And it saddened me to discover I was pronouncing Kahlan wrong (more of a literal pronunciation of "kah-len", but it's "kay-len" in the show).

On the bright side, the action scenes look well done; the barrier looks better than I had imagined; and the confessor power "shockwave" seems dead on.

Watched the preview. Doesn't seem too bad, but Richard doesn't seem big enough, based upon his description in the series. Kahlan is OK (but seems much older than the casted Richard), and Zedd looks creepy...

Glad someone bumped this or I would have forgotten.

Doesn't look like it is on CW anymore, Where I live it is on the local ABC channel at 12:05 sunday morning.

Seems like someone is trying to release it like Firefly.

I know CW23 (WNLO) out of Buffalo is showing it, from 7-9pm this Saturday.

Not sure about you poor buggers further afield, though.

ps - Neesha. Yeah, the shockwave in the teaser isn't quite like the Transformers one :p

So did anyone watch it? It was pretty decent (the first two episodes aired back-to-back). I thought Richard was younger than I pictured him and for some reason, I always pictured Zed as an old short dude, not a tall, lanky dude. I honestly didn't really remember that much of the plot for Wizard's First Rule so I don't know how closely the show followed the book. Didn't Richard memorize the Book of Shadows in the novel?

Yeah, if I remember correctly, his father made him copy it and copy it until he could recite it completely, and then made him burn the book.

There were a lot of details that the show apparently decided to completely throw out.

Khalan doesn't know that Zed is the great wizard, though she believes he may be able to help her find him. Richard is the one who figures it out first, and ultimately is named Seeker because of it.

The Sword of Truth was without any real evident power (it should have gone through sword and armor alike easily once Richard was angry) and it didn't test him after the first kill made with the Sword.

They completely changed the journey through the Boundary, there was supposed to be a path that they followed rather than a gaping hole caused by catapults firing magic rocks.

There were also numerous other instances where they changed or removed details from the story as well.

As for the Book of Counted Shadows, yes Richard did memorize it and then his step-father told him to destroy it once he was sure it was committed to memory. The actual Book was destroyed before Khalan went to Westlands and not after they were already at the boundary.

All that said, I think the show has potential once I manage to get over the fact that they aren't being as true to the books as I would like. My biggest complaint is that it feels as though I am watching Zena or Hercules with the horrible special effects and plentiful mediocre acting and sets (though I think they nailed Zed. He isn't exactly how I pictured him, but his demeanor is perfect).

It was good, not great, I will probably watch it if it isn't on after midnight like last night. (actually started at 12:30 because the college football game went long)

There were a lot of changes to the story, sometimes it felt like a different story with the same characters.

Mostly the changes seemed to be to add action or drama and to move the story along. I dont get why they had it that Richard didnt know Zedd when in the books they were close friends.

Like Neesha I always pictured Zedd as a short kooky old man, dont know if that was from the books or just something I added in.

One thing I thought was sort of strange was that they didn't add the "Truth" lettering to the sword. Goodkind mentioned it so many times in the books it's odd he didn't insist on it.

Yea, the Sword just seemed like a regular sword. They should have had him realize that he was almost a different person when he wielded it. I also think they should have made "wizard's first rule" a more important comment, rather than just something said in passing in the 2nd episode. As mentioned above, the show seems good enough (I'll continue to DVR it and watch it) if you realize that they aren't going to follow the books too closely. If I remember correctly, Richard didn't realize Kahlan was a Seeker early on, did he? In the TV show, he sees her use her power before he even talks to her.

Pretty sure he didnt find out she was a confessor for a while. She was all nervous about him not liking her when he found out.

Weren't they being chased by hearthounds or something while they were on the way to Addie? or was that a later book.

They seemed to add in the Book still existing and the guy who stole it so they could have a chase going on to add suspense.

I recently reread a lot of the series. That's straight out of the book.

Quote:
The Sword of Truth was without any real evident power (it should have gone through sword and armor alike easily once Richard was angry) and it didn't test him after the first kill made with the Sword.

His major test with the sword comes much later. Most of the sword's power is locked right now, even though he is a legitimate Seeker. All the previous Seekers have met terrible fates; as Richard will find out when he meets a former Seeker. The sword will deform him and drive him insane...unless he can master it as a "True Seeker".

Here's how he does that:SPOILER (copy and paste it elsewhere and it will resume normal font size) He turns the blade white (anger fuels the basic power of the sword, but the power of love unlocks it's true power)

Quote:

This one I kinda forget, but I think crossing back over was kinda easy-ish because it happens really early on (I remember Kahlen going batshit over the red fruit apple). There *is* a path they can't stray off of at some point in the series very a la Lord of the Rings, with the spirits pretending to be beloved dead relatives, but I think that's after they meet Aggie.

Quote:
There were also numerous other instances where they changed or removed details from the story as well.

Yeah I'm sure they cut a lot though, because again IIRC there's a lot of narration/internal dialogue and stuff that's all about what's going on inside their heads that's probably really difficult to show.

Quote:

Correct, he and his dad burned the book. And he has the tooth as proof that his father was not a thief, along with orders to 'return' the book (via his memorization) to the rightful owner if he can. That's a shame they did it that way, how hard would a small flash back be :P

I got the impression that it was SUPPOSED to be just like Xena, etc.. Isn't it the same guy doing it too?

In the book he has no idea what she did, even though he sees stuff. He doesn't know anything about magic really (though he alludes to having seen it once...when he and his father burned the book, magic happens).

He also knows the word Confessor and it's important to him, but he doesn't know what it means.

It"s important because the Book Richard has in his head begins something like "These words if spoken, can only be confirmed by the use of a Confessor. I also had a "whoa" moment when I realized Richard"s father would have known what that meant...but then quickly realized he didn't know about it because only Richard knew the content of the book. His father never read it. And as it turns out, couldn"t have even had he wanted to.

Crappo, I was hoping it was just a bug with my style page. They're probably not enabled in this section even though you can use them.

My shit is still there if I edit it, I'll quickly grab the black box code and pop it in to sub 'til Lou and his magic fingers fixes it. ;)

I'm really sad that it's not being as true as it should, and I know these books better then I know the palm of my hand.

Although it's not as bad as it could be.

Last nights didn't seem related to the books at all that I can remember.

It's Hercules and Xena together roaming the world helping people with sort of a background story going on.

Yeah, last night will be the last time I watch it. It's all over the place.

I missed the first 3 episodes of this as I was out of the country when they aired, but managed to download them and watch them lastnight.

All I can say is that that 10 minute preview on youtube and on the Seeker site was horribly misleading.
Based on that, it seemed true to the books.

Everything after that, however, has been all over the place. And, as mentioned above, the acting isn't the best either. Very Xena/Hercules'ish feel to it, especially with the numerous Matrix-style slow motion captures.
Kahlan and Richard suddenly being able to decimate dozens of people, dodge arrows, and so on.... utterly craptastic.

*sigh*
Goodkind has gone the way of Lucas, it would seem.
Great story/lore. Absolute rubbish execution.
