Apologies if already posted somewhere else. Did you see this?
http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/new-game-enemy-takes-a-solid-day-to-defeat/1238418

FFXI introduced a boss that seems similar to the Sleeper... except this is meant to be beat and takes literally 20+ hours of fighting. Anyone know anything.

And we all thought Xegony and the Rathe were retarded fights.

The article says they were attacking it for 18 hours and didn't put any noticeable amount of damage on it. It is either not meant to be beaten, it takes some kind of strategy that they weren't using (bane weapons or something), or it's bugged.

Everything else in that shit for a game takes forever to do, I do not understand why this is a shock to people.

It was fun times looking back, but god damn the amount of micro management it required was obscene.

Yeah, like I posted in the other thread about this...there's a point at which it's no longer the game's fault, it's just the players being retards.

I'm thinking they reached that point. It sounds a lot like beating on an evading mob for 20 hours in WoW and then bitching that Blizzard screwed you over.

I was refering to the original jboot camp...Najena...which often took A FULL FUCKING DAY (mine was, IIRC...a 16 hour camp, and I brought along a max'd level wizard to 'enforce' the line, since at that time whoever did the most dmg won the loot.

I've never been so tempted to jump queue before, it sucked donkey balls. However, no one jumped the queue, or even attempted to. This was also back in the day (not on Lanys, before Lanys) when doing so was akin to child molestation.

Yah, either I was really lucky or there really was a certain set of placeholders for the AC. Because I never had to camp him for very long on any of my chars.

It's so hard to believe that, like damn near every other mob in EQ, the AC had a, or a set of, placeholders that one could kill?

I dunno, considering it was the two of you that busted out the smartass comments about it to begin with.

But that's ok, I'm used to the "I'll start shit and then play the I don't care card." strategy, so...I don't care!!! lawl, c wat i did thar?

You're right.

You, alone, had the super secret strat that was debated ad nauseum during "the day". Please, let's get into great detail about your special, repeatable, spawn strategy for the AC. Because debating something that was a foregone conclusion 8 years ago is really fun. Prove to us your amazing old school knowledge.

When did I say I don't care? Nice straw man.

I said it's pointless to debate you. But let's do it anyway. It's a slow day.

Still waiting for your strat. As a reminder, you said:

I guess that could mean that you do care but don't want to debate it? But now you do want to debate it? Hard to tell what your position as a candidate is, Senator Kerry.

See, you're playing your cards in the wrong order. Most board trolls wait to play the "I don't care" card until AFTER they've dug themselves a hole. You played "I don't care" first, and now are trying to dig the hole. You're doing it wrong.

If I may be so bold, I would suggest a publication from the fine "...For Dummies" series to help you with that problem.

After my buddy got 4 ACs in a week with around 10 hours effort, I'm pretty sure he had the place holder spawns down to a science.

I got lucky, only had to camp stormfeather for 14 hours.

People apparently STILL debate this in EQ.

FWIW...I always got it fast, once we started killing placeholders. Prior to that, it was pretty sucky. Does it mean that ABSOLUTELY THERE WERE PLACEHOLDERS AND A METHOD!!!!! no. Just seemed that way to me, and based on my experience, I'd say there were def. PHers to kill to move it along faster.

Then again there's plenty of people who did fucking spawn dances and *swore* by them too. So who knows.

Wasn't it just that there were spawn tables? Something like...

Zone: South Ro

Spawn Table 1:
Desert Tarantula (40% spawn chance)
Dune Tarantula (30% spawn chance)
Desert Madman (20% spawn chance)
Jackal (9% spawn chance)
Terrorantula (1% spawn chance)

Spawn Table 2:
Sand Giant (50% spawn chance)
Crypt Mummy (20% spawn chance)
Shriveled Mummy (20% spawn chance)
Sand Scarab (6% spawn chance)
Sand Giant Husam (4% spawn chance)

So clearing mobs on that spawn table will increase the chances of your rare spawn to appear. And these aren't at the exact same spawn point, but the different spawn points in the zone are assigned to specific spawn tables. Thus, in South Ro you might have 10 spawn points in the zone assigned to spawn table 1, etc etc.

That's how I understood it to work.

There weren't specific placeholders, when you kill more mobs more mobs respawn; thus rolling the dice more often. The best bet was always right after server up, because the whole zone spawns at once.

Well, I guess you could argue the point because only the desert side mobs counted in SRo for instance. But any point could spawn any mob from the table. If they didn't, then SRo and Oasis wouldn't have gotten the hell spawns with 5-6 giants/cyclops up at once.

I think someone figured out that the spiders in oasis were the placeholders for the Sand Giants. As I recall, at least.

Basically, every mob in the game had SOME system that dictated its spawn.

You had simple placeholders. (Raster of Guk)

You had "Kunark Spawn Cycles". (Sarnak Courier)

You had slightly-different placeholders. (Ancient Croc spawn requiring all other croc spawns be down.)

You had spawn tables. (Like Cuchulainn described.)

You had mobs that supposedly had no placeholder, simply a long spawn timer. (Stormfeather? I doubt that though, since I saw many Stormfeather spawns in short times while leveling my bard(s))

Anyway, no one is saying there was a super-secret method to making any mob spawn. Certainly nothing like the crazy theories people came up with to get the GBS-dropper to spawn. (Run to this zone, talk to this guy, kill 2 spiders, eat a muffin, spin around 4 times, voila) But there's no denying that most mobs had some sort of system for getting them to spawn, even if it was as simple as killing its placeholder.

I remember asking Miggent about random EQ shit one day and him saying that there were so many horseshit systems and spreadsheets for thing in that stage of the game, that it is nearly impossible to understand how it works compared to today, and that there are very few, if any, people working there now that could make heads or tails out of that mess to explain it.

There is a super secret pattern of mobs you have to kill in a specific order. He also only spawns in the fall at noon or spring at midnight.

100k plat and I will tell you the mobs and order.

It'd be funny if it dropped a note similar to the carp catching quest note.

There's a quest in FFXI for a special fishing rod, and to get the rod you have to catch 10k carp. Along with the fishing rod you'd get a note saying something to the effect of "Find something better to do with your time." I never got the rod myself. I gave up after about 800 carp, and borrowed someone else's from time to time.
