I wish I could stop being so cynical, but I've seen that headline numerous times over the years. There's always the claim and then dead silence after... until another claim is made.

It seems like they've made pretty good progress. Success in monkeys, with human testing up next means they are pretty well past the theoretical stage. But yeah...there's still plenty that could go wrong I'm sure.

Ditto. I'll read their stuff when I get some time, but I'm getting very cynical about such claims.

There was some promising Alzhimer's article the other day I got a bit jazzed over, until some of it looked mighty familiar when I started diving into what's publically published of their research, turned out to be pretty much the same shit as was 'discovered' in 2003...and five fucking years later they're not much further with it. My grandfather has it so anything that could potentially halt the progression or (wouldn't it be great) improve his condition would be fanfreakintastic.

Unfortunately most stories are due to shitty media reporting because they don't have good science depts. to review the data AND they're out to sell ads, so you get a lot of misrepresentation and hype. And there are scumbags out there that capitalize on it right away too. (Study finds X might reduce cancer risks...you'll see shady companies hawking X suppliments as cancer prevention w/in a month or two).

Anyhoo any progress with HIV would be wonderful, especially given the utter failure of the last vaccine trials. :(

The doctors still need funding to launch human trials. In the world of HIV research, that’s often where things fall apart.

“Clinical trials are very expensive,” Paul said.

“That is the worry of the researcher. This is what nightmares are made of – that after 30 years of work, you find it doesn’t work,” Paul said.

So yeah, not holding my breath, but at least finding an unchanging portion of the virus which could potentially be targetted *is* interesting, so long as that protein is essential to the virus and it can't mutate around it, AND whatever you use to knock out that protein doesn't have horrific side effects on humans.

Even if it mutates around it though, if it had limited side effects it could be a good suppression drug to add to the list.

So we'll see if we ever hear of these guys again in the next five years. I hope so.

Here's another link to their page on the University of Texas website. I found it relatively interesting, especially when it goes into a bit more detail about the abzymes.

"A small minority of HIV positive people also start producing the abzymes after decades of the infection. The immune system in some people can cope with HIV after all.”

Really interesting, as well as the lupus patients. Good link!
