Got in a nice 42" Olivia LCD TV, took it out of the box to put it on display, and when I powered it up, I noticed the LCD was all cracked up. (only shows when its powered)

I am sure the purolator driver dropped the box hard enough to bust the lcd, but no way to prove it as there was no visible damage on the box, but I have seen them boot the boxs around before.

The company wrote it off and told me to dispose of it.

Seems such a waste to toss out a brand new 42", how expensive can it be to fix this?

I think it costs about a million dollars.

I think you would basically have to replace the entire screen which can only happen in a sealed room in the factory if you don't want dust to give you a bunch of 'dead pixels'. Not really a repair kind of situation. I would try calling the company anyway to see if their warranty might cover it considering it came out of the box that way. You could end up getting a free replacement from the shipper and another from the manufacturer.

I would assume he's getting a free replacement and they told him to just throw the other one away, rather than mail it to them. He wants to know if he can somehow salvage it for a few hundred dollars, thus giving him 2 TVs for the price of one (and change).

Think he'd be throwing a fit if it came w/ a busted LCD and they told him to fuck off and throw it away. :skewl:

You're not going to be able to fix it for cheap like you would a laptop. The screen is the expensive part of the tv for a tv, where the laptop's expensive part is usually the electronic guts.

Also, good luck finding a replacement screen for it if you want to try to fix it. :p

laptop lcd's aren't cheap either. had a guy bring a busted 17" widescreen laptop into the shop the a few weeks back. I quoted him like 300 or 400 I think... Most of that was parts cost.

Wow which company allow you to ask for replacement without sending out the broken one?

That's actually pretty common with the 21" flat panels here at work. When one breaks under warranty we get a new one and they don't ask for the other back.

I have a radioshack store, but I can't go through my normal repair channels to get this fixed, if its possible, as I am supposed to destroy the unit. They just refunded my account and did not ask for the broken one to be shipped back. This has never happened before, they always want the broken crap back, as they never believe you or they want to do the salvage work.

I will give Olevia a call this morning and see what they have to say.

Right he already said he was getting a free replacement(which he doesn't get to keep) from the company because the shipper damaged it. I was suggesting he call the manufacturer and see if he can get a replacement from them as well. Can't hurt to try.

Stealing is stealing. What's the difference if it is downloading cracked video games (or cracks FOR illegal copies of video games), music from Torrents, or replacing TVs?

As for committing acts of fraud, they asked me to destroy it, I never said I would do so.

Anyways, I was just going to give it to a friend if the repairs were not too much, but as I suspected, its not worth fixing.

Busted LCD display on a $1100 42" to repair would cost $750 plus the shipping costs according to Olevia.

Come garbage day I will put it out on the curb the night before, I wonder what the garbage man will think, or anyone else driving by for that matter.

Same shit you're thinking. "I wonder what's wrong with it and how much it'd cost to fix it?"

So they just refunded you the money and ended the transaction?

yeah i have 2 logitech g15 (original) keyboards, some of the paint rubbed of the keys, so they sent me a replacement at no charge, and didn't even ask about sending the other back.

They probably don't repair them in house anyway, not even worth refurbishing, so it saves them money by not having it sent back in.
