All my life I hated apples. Turns out, I was just eating the wrong kind.

A couple years back, I went to walmart, and just as a fun thing to do, I bought 2 of every variety of apple they had to try them. One apple stood out among the rest. Fuji apples are absolutely amazing. Forget everything you ever thought you knew about apples and give one of these a try.

There are a few things I like about them. The main thing is the taste. WOW. They are so sweet, it's like eating candy. I also love the texture and juiciness of them. I always hated that gritty red delicious texture.. ick. Not these though, they are crisp and juicy. I also really like the size, each one being a meal within it self is really great for a big eater like me. One apple really satisfies. The shelf life is outstanding too, you can store these things forever in your fridge, but mine never last more than a week it seems like.

You can buy these pretty much year round, though I have seen a few spotty patches. Some batches are better than others I have noticed. I did get a few this year that were on the tart side, but over all they are a very consistent apple and it doesn't take a lot of work to pick out a good one.

Next time you are at the store, grab one, they usually run about a 1.49 a lb and you won't regret it.

I love apples. Mostly juicy sweeter types. Tart are ok too but I have to be in the mood. The only apples I don't like are... crap apples.. and not even sure those are apples :)

Can't touch apple cider like I used too as a kid though, maybe 6-8oz are ok, any more and I know I'll be bathroom-bound the next day.

Apple Liqueur

Dice 1 Fuji apple, place in 1 qt mason jar
Pour 1/2 cup sugar over top, mash the apple a bit with a wooden spoon
Wait ~1hr for the juice to form, add 3/4 cup water and swirl to dissolve the sugar
Top off with 80 proof vodka (~1.5 cups)
Let it sit for 2 weeks, swirling every other day
Strain in to an empty wine bottle, mix with a little club soda; It's awesome.

I should add that you seal the jar after adding the vodka, of course.

I have a huge bag of small organic apples sitting in my fridge they are NOT red delicious, and they are very very good. Apples last a long time as long as there are no 'bad' ones, a bad apple will really spoil the bunch. Otherwise they do have a long shelf life whether in the 'fridge or out.

Another really good apple is the 'Grapple'. http://www.grapplefruits.com/index.html

Fuji apples are simply awesome, probably one of the best all around apples on the market.

Fuji and Braeburns are both good apples. I definitely appreciate having a sweet, moist apple as opposed to a dry (Red Delicious) or tart (Granny Smith) one.

Tarot, I can't believe you like Grapples though. They're nasty! It's like a perfectly good apple that's been infused with artificial grape flavoring. There's no hint that you're eating something that might have been found in nature- the fake grape flavoring doesn't blend well with the natural apple flavor. :pukeright:

Anyway, if I'm going to mess with nature and eat something more than a plain apple, I love heading to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for their special caramel apples! Check this out--

Quote:
GOURMET CARAMEL APPLES!

These are the ultimate in caramel apples--so fresh, so decadent, so delightful! Each delicious Granny Smith apple is hand-dipped in hot, thick, homemade caramel. Here is a list of some of our most unique flavors.
EXPLOSION- two layers of pecans and chocolate
TIGER BUTTER- peanuts, P.B., choc.
PECAN BEAR- pecans, caramel, & choc.
AVALANCHE-rice krispies, P.B., mallows, choc.chips, milk choc.
RASPBERRY BOMB- rasp.choc., rasp.chips, milk choc.
SMORE'S- grahams, mallow cream, choc.
MONSTER- pecans, choc., crushed oreos, white choc.
COLOSSAL CRUNCH- peanuts,P.B., oreos, choc.
DIRT-white choc. & oreos
MUD PIE- milk choc. & oreos
CHERRIES JUBLILEE-cherries, choc. & mallow cream
BUTTERFINGER- two layers of milk choc. & butterfingers
ROCKY ROAD- choc over walnuts & mallow cream
APPLE PIE-white choc., cinnamon & sugar
P.B. SURPRISE-p.b. & oreos

:tongue3:

I have to agree that the Grapples are pretty nasty, plus they are expensive as hell

I love a granny smith apple, 4309. Yeah they're green and on the small side, but that's how I like them. If you're looking to give a gift, give a granny smith and you can't go wrong.

Probably.

I just went and bought four fuji apples at kroger, and I am not particularly impressed, except that they have a marvelous texture.

They are quite tasty.

Texture is one of the best things about them IMO, I don't think I've ever gotten a mealy Fuji Apple.

I tried a honey crisp and it was good - They must have a short season cause I only see them every once in awhile.

It is hard for me to eat any other apple but fuji now. Try eating a fuji then taking a bite out of a red delicious.. Even gala apples end up getting spit in the garbage now.

Just to stay off topic...

Why the fuck do those guys on those crab boats not fucking tether themselves to the vessel? It would cost virtually nothing to create a floating tether system for those guys on the deck...

Seriously, it pisses me off.

It's a possible death sentence if the boat capsizes.

"pretty much" and "guaranteed" are miles apart in that kind of situation though.

So why not a tether system with a release where you're connected? I mean, a simple carbeaner would do the job.

so... "don't put in an obvious safety system because you might panic" is the argument? :p

People don't panic if they are thrown in the ocean without a tether, but omg they will panic if they are connected to a safety line? Their ship won't capsize every time they are thrown over, either-- even if they DO panic every time the ship capsizes, we're talking about a small percentage of incidences in which the tether would help.

Somewhere along this reasoning you are losing me. I've obviously never been in a ship, but I've certainly used a lot of carbeaners.... it wouldn't be that hard :p
