I would think it would be Yao's preference as to how people refer to him. If he'd rather keep to the tradional Eastern naming scheme rather than Westernizing his name, people should respect his decision.

Sky, what's in the air above everyone's head. You want to crash it? How are you gonna do it? The'res just no way.

<Maybe if you pretend on an internet forum that you are a special and cool guy then the sky will crash down upon our heads. it will hurt and we will cry and you will probably laugh because you are a big and dumb jerk. too bad it has not happened yet, *PHEW*

I'm with you bink - i have tried to like this shit but I just can't get into it. I enjoyed princess mononoke well enough but, well like this "Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann" that everybody in arts said was so fucking good.. i downloaded it and find it mildly entertaining at best.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann is a terrible waste of time. It's full of tired cliches and its only redeemable quality is how it foregoes the unnecessary flashbacks and exposition before battles that bogs down other shows in its genre. The main character is completely unlikable in the first half, then the only good character dies, and the entire second half of the series is a long and drawn out beatdown.

There's really not any reason to give anime a try. It's 99% terrible crap that isn't worth watching and the 1% that is decent still isn't overly remarkable.

Also, I don't think any kind of internet fandom culture is bearable.

It's ok if you don't like Gurren Lagann. I didn't make the show. Lol. (I still argue it's one of the best animes in years... and MANY, many people agree.)

Anime is mainly good if you like seeing tentacles in vaginas, but cannot convince any real life owners of vaginas to put tentacles in them.

Hey man, anime can have f'd up stuff too, just like real porn. SomethingAwful has a subforum for anime called "ADTRW" -- "anime death tentacle rape whorehouse" or something. Haha. I'd say there were more fucked up porn fans than anime fans though. I think porn has a much higher "penetration" rate than anime. Pardon the pun! (That's probably an annoying phrase people use, too.)

Well, Miyazaki films seem to be to your liking Binkee. That tells me you like epic stories at least. I can't say there's too many anime with that feeling outside of Miyazaki stuff. A lot of series are tailored towards kids, and there's always a bit of cultural understanding you probably don't want to be familiar with anyway just to get references in comedies/drama.

Check out Darker Than Black, I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. Some find it confusing, but it's a good anime. Give it a shot!

This probably doesn't count as a statement or phrase, but whenever someone makes a "@soandso" post I want to reach through my screen. I mean, GEE, you've got the name there and everything... it's not like I could just assume that it's directed at me, or whoever. Yea, we definitely need that @ symbol to make sure you know who the message is for.

It is what it is.

People who state the obvious, and then look for acceptance from those who they are saying it to. It is cold. I know it, you know it. No need to state it.

I also hate people who type sentences and paragraphs in all lower case letters. O wait :?

However, I do have a new phrase I love. Not sure where I heard it from, but-

Do not expect competence from the incompetent. If you do, you will be disappointed many times over.

:santa:

To pick on myself a bit:

"It's all good"

This wormed into my speech about 3 years after I moved to Texas. I am attempting to eradicate it. It must die. I said "y'all" and "howdy" before I got here, so they can stay. Have to have something to amuse the brits.

"Yeah, no..."

A friend pointed out that I do this a lot. I've become hyper aware of it since the day he mentioned it. I do it when I am responding directly to statement X, but shifting gears back to an earlier statement to continue on. A sort of verbal queue that I am jumping tracks. Still irritates me every time it slips out of my mouth.

On the topic of catching yourself saying things, I'd like to add "hai" as in yes in Japanese. Bad habit I got from FFXI since everyone said it. I'll say it every now and then and they're like "hello" or "wut?"

people tell military stories because it was such a unique and memorable experience - 4 years of military life = 10 years of normal life, if not more.

I don't know I did 28 years in the military including two plus tours in Nam I rarely tell stories about the time I spent in the service except to guys that shared the same experiences as I did namely other Nam vets. Besides nobody put a gun to my head and made me enlist I volunteered for the Army and I volunteered to go to Nam. Guess some guys had a bad time with their service I am sorry for that guess not everyone is cut out to be a soldier.

Been in the Air Force for 16 yrs now....Damn cannot believe it has been that long. Most of our stories involve golf carts and what resort we went too. Ask anyone we don't do shit except play golf and shoot shit down from the sky. Everyone in the Air Force is a pilot or some form of Aircraft Engineer.........YEA RIGHT!!!

I would have to say mine are:

"nucular." Seriously, knock it off. I will sterilize you.

Q: How many Vietnam vets does it take to change a light bulb?
A: You don't know, man, you weren't there!
My dad was there, twice. I have every respect for military service, particularly in unpopular wars. But they do say this all the time. The fact that they're right doesn't make it less annoying to hear, but does explain why they only tell their stories to other Vietnam vets.
In fact, I'm generally annoyed by anyone who served in the military who thinks it licenses them to look, or talk, down to the rest of us. If military veterans really want to spend all the gratitude they have coming to them just making us tolerate elitism from them, that's fine, but you can't get that and our admiration. You have to pick one.

"Less gay, more play." Or any variation thereof. Now that I really look at it, this is an intersection of two annoyances that sort of Voltron up into a single tolerance-piercing offense and make me wish my guildmates all shared one neck for a few seconds after I read or hear it. The components are "Less <whatever>, more <rhyming whatever>" and any use of the word "gay" as a negative descriptor -- whether it relates to actual homosexuality or not. (Hint: Karazhan is a castle. It cannot be gay.)
