Post subject: Re: Rant: The Casual Vs. Hardcore Argument

I've seen a lot of these topics about 5 man obtainable epic items on the WoW boards lately. Thinking it through I've come to the conclusion it could be implemented correctly. There seems to be four types of players in WoW: raiders of end game content, PvP addicts, instance runners, and casual players. The casual players are those that don't play enough to warrent epic items any way you look at it. The other three groups all might put in equal playtime in a week yet it's the instance runners that are getting shafted. <
>
<
>
I think most would agree large raiding guilds deserve the best equipment. Raiding takes the most preporation and organization, and people to "slay the beast". WoW has already implemented a way for non raiders to gain comparable equipment. The PvP rewards are nothing to scoff at, and for PvP are almost as good as the top raiding equipment. That takes care of two of our three groups of people putting in near equal time. If a system could be designed to give "hardcore" instance and quest runners comparable equipment that would take close to the same amount of invested time, then I really don't see a problem. Like all jobs, it's about time invested and reward. If it takes 100 hours of play time to get a full armor set of purple, whether you are fighting 40 man raid bosses, or doing 5 man instances 100 times, the result should be similar.<

The problem with that sel, is that I personally just dont see how any 5-10 man instance could ever REALLY be as hard as a 40 man instance. I mean, dire maul was tough in the beginning but even then it was nothing like mc, it was doable from the start with a pickup group. Im sure there will eventually be 5-10 man content with epic loot in it, but it will always lag behind raid gear. For example, when the expansion comes out, id expect to see teir 1 epic level gear dropping from the 10 man instances, but the raiders would be moving onto teir 3-4. The gap would still be there, and be obvious, so the whining wouldnt stop. Traab "Love Machine" Fellhammer<

Out of curiosity, does anyone agree with my post? Or disagree? I mean, maybe im looking at it the wrong way when I say there can never be 5-10 man instances with equivalent difficulty and gear to 40 man content, im just curious to see if anyone disagrees and why. At least here I can sometimes get people to actually COUNTER an argument. On the blizzard board my post would just be answered by a copy paste of the post I tried to argue against. Well, in EQ you could run those instances over and over to get points for gear that was comperable to high end raid zone gear. So, sure, if you are willing to run an adventure 100 times to earn points for stuff, it can work.<

If I remember correctly, and it has been a while, the base gear was below the level of Plane of Time gear, but on par with gear from the lower tiers of Planes of Power. It was also slotted, and you could customize it with add-ons that you could purchase with additional instance run points. So one person could add on a ton of HPs, another could add HPs and Mana, or possible haste, or underwater
eathing, or stamina, etc.

Post subject: Re: Rant: The Casual Vs. Hardcore Argument

Let the 5 man instance runners get epic gear. It should be close but not quite as good as the raid epic gear, and maybe more designed for those running instances. Notice Blizzard has already set up three talent trees. Most people in a raid guild have to choose a certain tree (priest:holy, druid:restoration, warrior:defensive etc etc), same with someone devoted to pvp (priest:shadow, druid alance, warrior:arms). Of course this isn't a steadfast rule, but most follow it. Wouldn't it be nice if the epic gear that came from quests in 5 man instances benifited that third talent tree. That third tree often compliments instance running (priest:dicipline, druid:feral, warrior:fury). That's how I would design the talent trees. They seem to be set up close to that as it is, maybe just a few modifications. <
>
<
>
As for epic drops in 5-mans; It can't be a drop, that is just too easy. But it can't be as rare as the .8% epic drops from the current 5-man dungeons, that is just too rare. Some kind of quest should suffice. A collect quest, say collect 50, and on average 5 drop in an instance, you would have to run it 10 times to get one piece of epic armor. 10 times at maybe 2 hours each, and say it has to actually be beat 10 times so maybe a secondary collect 10 from the end boss; that's 20 hours of work for one epic item and who knows how many green, blue, and cash items. There are 8 slots for a complete armor set, maybe have some of the quests overlap and you could get to somewhere around 100 hours of invested time to a completed epic set.<
>
<
>
This seems completely reasonable, and could facilitate people that want to run instances. Maybe have the instances set up in parts like SM, so you might need a few epic items from questing the previous parts to be able to kill the end boss in the last part of the instance to get the chest, leg and helm pieces. The instances and bosses have to be hard. Hard enough that anyone would fail the bosses the first time if they didn't know what was going to happen, like in a raid instance.
