This video of the Miss USA 2011 contestants displays the core of the issue regarding science education. The vast majority of these people do not understand what science is or how it works. The vast majority of these people do not understand what evolution is or how it works. They seem to equate the acceptance of a consensus scientific understanding with belief. They seem to think that there are two sides of some debate. This is what you get when ideology and religion is allowed to dictate education policy regarding what is science.

Evolution is a chronological change in allelic frequency within reproducing populations.

If we are to change the definition of science to allow the teaching of intelligent design creationism alongside the teaching of evolution, we should also teach,

Flat earthism and geocentrism alongside heleocentrism
Alchemy alongside chemistry
Astrology alongside astronomy
Witchcraft alongside physics
Intelligent falling alongside gravity

Some of these ladies clearly have a much better understanding than others. For the record, the more intelligent chicks are definitely hotter!

Voting is broken. At least it's broken if you check "Yes". Maybe it counts up votes normally if you check "No", but I won't be the one to test that.

Intelligent design and creationism aren't that related to evolution IMO. The former deal with origins, and the latter with where things are now. The idea that animals evolve doesn't bother religious folks as much as the idea that we might be ape descendants. We're too 'important' for that to be true.

They're not mutually exclusive. The idea that an omnipotent creator determined the rules, set up initial conditions, started it up and stepped back is exactly as plausible as creationism period, except that it benefits from our ability to observe the long-term consequences of reproducing sexually so close to a star. In fact, presuming said creator, it might be the most ergonomic way to go about things -- efficiency being the sole remaining determinant of the quality of your work. When all other constraints and challenges are removed by immortality, omniscience and omnipotence, all that's left is to go for the high score.

To clarify: The above post references evolution used as the means of creation, not the "seven days from nothing" literal creation theory.
