No way, it showed that people shout shit out and aren't black!

And before it became a common occurrence that people shouted stuff out, someone was probably pissed about it!

i guess the lesson learned from all of this is... if you want to have a topic about racial issues, then start off by asking whether or not there is risk involved for using bit torrent to download illegal media.

o, and if you say you are not a pretentious asshole... chances are pretty good that ..........................................

You didn't create anything. You copied someone else's creation.

In response to another poster, you have shown yourself to be a megalomaniacal, self-righteous, sanctimonious, supercilious, racist, materialistic, morally-bankrupt individual.

Rationalize and attempt to justify 'til you're all blue in the face. Copyright infringement is theft.

Depriving corporate interests of revenues and profits reduces the portion to which the artists and creators of intellectual property are contractually entitled also.

The bottom line is if something is offered to the general public for sale and you obtain it for free, you have committed theft.

I'm not morally bankrupt.

Quite the opposite. I donate a lot of my time refereeing a lot of sports in my community, I'm involved w/ the city I live in, and go to committee planning sessions and take interest in zoning hearings and what-not, I'm involved w/ the Attorney Generals Young Legal Council here at ASU, and I helped build the kids next door's science project for their science fair they had last week. (My daughter got a blue ribbon! Oi!) and last summer I interned at the local free legal help clinic, offering services to those same poor & disenfranchised people I get annoyed with in the theaters. :)

Damn, I just re-read that and I'm a pretty damn good person. :) I feel good about myself!

You don't have to build yourself up for anyone. People tend to look at it differently when you do (or try). Not you personally, anyone.

Just let it be already.

You do realize its the same mindset used by looters? Specifically, stealing property simply because the odds of law enforcement are extremely slim to none. Heck, looters are probably on higher moral ground because the stores they take from are likely insured and will therefore be reimbursed for their loss...

Say hello to your peer group!

I happen to agree with you.

It is a crime, there is no doubt of that.
Just don't call it stealing/theft, as that requires a tangible item.

Yes, I'm anal about it :D

Personally, I download songs because I refuse to pay money to the RIAA/media cartel.
When possible I give money directly to the artists.

You're just arguing semantics, Caladaar.

Theft of ideas has happened throughout history. It doesn't matter whether you steal something that's physical or intangible, it's still theft.

Both of those are personal beliefs, which are shared by many, but there are still people who want to make a profit.

In college, my Senior Research paper (last requirement for the BA) was based on this thesis: Modern technology has rendered copyright laws unenforceable.

During my research for that paper, I looked up the RIAA's litigation history. This was Fall quarter of 2005. At that time, the RIAA had successfully sued a grand total of five pirates, worldwide, ever. The rest was hype.

Could you get in trouble? Sure. But the RIAA really sucks at doing any more than hassling you, and you won't be worth the government's attention unless you're sharing like 50 gigs of illegal media when they happen to look.

Guilty until proven innocent
Quote:
It's no secret that media companies have started to hire companies such as BayTSP to automatically find file sharers and send letters to their ISPs. The goal of this is to use fear to persuade people to use legal methods of getting digital content.

Many ISP's, especially universities, trust the good faith of these companies and will automatically deactivate the Internet connection of those who they get notifications for. As a personal project, and with the help of Carnegie Mellon's Information Security Office (which employs me to work on various computing security tasks), I decided to investigate the reliability of notices from companies such as BayTSP. The answer: the companies do not actually gather the data they claim to. Their standards for sending DMCA notices are very low.
Quote:
At the end of the day, BayTSP (and probably other similar companies) are sending DMCA notices which claim that they detected a user uploading and downloading copyrighted files. This is a lie. They didn't catch the user in the act of downloading. A lying tracker, a peer using peer exchange, hostile web page, or buggy BitTorrent client could all result in a false DMCA notice.

This post proves two things:

1. The board isnt dead, the topics have not been interesting.
2. This topic has more to it than I realized.
3. Dola is, and will always be a moron.
4. I can't count.

Thanks for the input so far, I have been reading the sites listed, and am talking more about this with people that I file share with locally. The topic has many many more levels then we have even breached here.

I uploaded a couple of my bands albums:

http://www.hunterxaz.com/misc/its.zip - The Wiggums - It's about Dam Time! (Wacky Pop Ska)

http://www.hunterxaz.com/misc/looking.zip - Backline - Looking Forward To It - (Punk / Metal / Ska)

http://www.myspace.com/goexmachina -- most current music

I play drums. Enjoy and stuff.

(PS: I know a lot of people are going to say it sucks, it's terrible, etc, but whatever. I had fun, learned a lot, and made enough money to support my family and I.)
