The dynamic world is a great concept, and one I wished Horizons could have pulled off years ago.
Who knows, maybe the technology is there now to be able to do it.

Definitely a very nice visual world, especially that dragon at the end - which makes me think you're going to need one SERIOUS computer to play this without lag.

I also like the combat system how they'll allow you to combine your professions skills/abilities, such as a Ranger shooting arrows through a wall of fire to make them fiery arrows. Pretty cool. Also, how you can combine racial traits with profession traits, which makes choice of race somewhat interesting.

As for the Asura race..... ugh.
Something tells me cute little 2 foot high cat-like people with huge anime-style eyes isn't exactly intended for the Western audience.

One thing I passed over yesterday on looking at this game, and which Aeralla pointed out to me, is their "Healing and Death" system.

Quick spoiler for those too lazy to read it : no healer classes. There may be some classes with the ability to heal, but I doubt it. It sounds like it's similar to Dragon Age - where if your group is victorious in a fight, your allies will "rally" (meaning they get back up from a KO'ed position).
Boss fights and big PvP fights will be a literal war of attrition.

But hey, at least we won't have the EQ or FFXI-style "let's wait an hour for a healer to come online" game. It's all about dps.

It's actually a pretty decent idea as eq, ffxi, wow...seem to revolve around the healing class. No heals, no raid, no group, no hard quest..etc.

This looks like it really has some serious potential...and some of those monsters just looked amazing. Now we see if they can pull it off.

^^ Yeah, I was thinking the same.

Heals will exist, it seems. I noticed further in the article they gave an example of a Sorceror (or Wizard, or whatever they are - the nuker class, basically) being able to cast a kind of "healing circle" where people inside will heal/regenerate. But yeah, it seems their main focus will be on crowd control, debuffing, and damage for the most part, which is cool.

Reminds me of good old 4-man Chardok runs with Ralanan. No healers allowed.

What are you talking about?! I healed him plenty of times with that one Necro spell that took my health and gave it to him! Wasn't it like 100 HP at a time? blowup

While probably true to some extent. Guild Wars 1 was better looking than World of Warcraft, and I swear it came out before WoW did, and it needed less in specifications than WoW did at the time.

My machine of the time was smooth as glass on Guild Wars (And Lineage), and hiccuping later on WoW. Hopefully they can keep that ability with the new game.

Edit: Appears it was released April 2005? Whatever it was still better looking and smoother than World of Warcraft. I remembering noting that fact and wondering why Warcraft didn't have the same visual capacity.

Warcraft was never intended to look any different that WC3 really. Bright colors and slightly cartoonish graphics are in keeping with the Warcraft games of the past.

Yeah well it still could l have been slightly smoother looking, more details.

What are they about to do anyway? The land graphics are getting a major boost in Cata; and they have what? ONE solid expansion after this one? The Emerald Dream? Beyond that haven't they played out the Warcraft Story?

Time for Warcraft 4? OR let it die for whatever the new MMO is?

Anyway. Guild Wars looked better and ran smoother on lesser machines of the day than Warcraft did, why is that?

There's plenty of lore left to explore after the emerald dream (which I honestly think is going to be a content patch in cataclysm) -- there's the rest of draenor to explore, there's traveling through the twisting nether to fight the legion on their home turf, they could do a lot more with the caverns of time, and they haven't yet revealed Nozdormu's time/location, so they can deal with that too.

That video is gorgeous and they are certainly saying some valid things about the failure of modern MMOs (ie, they've lost the ability for you to feel heroic and like you've achieved something in the world itself)....but having played the original GW and dumped it out of total non interest in how the game was structured, I'm not sure how GW2 is going to achieve what they are saying in the video. So I guess label me "curious, but skeptical".

This reminds me of the folks who always say the world is going to end on such and such date, but it never does and that doesn't seem to diminish their faith at all for some reason. The world will just end some other date.

Major MMO's don't just "die" out of nowhere for no reason. Even EQ is still around and kicking somehow.

Guild Wars 2 “Extended Experience”. Missus.

Extended experience makes us think that Guild War had, in the words of Scott Pilgrim, a sexy phase. But the lingering question of Guild Wars 2′s bi-curiosity isn’t what Arenanet are revealing today. It’s actually more details on how you’ll be able to play Guild Wars 2 when you’re not playing Guild Wars 2. As in, they’re releasing apps for the – deep breath – iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Android smart phones that’ll allow you to interact with the world. We’re not looking at the ability to play the whole game on – say – the Ipad (but never say never, they say), but be able to “do” stuff when you’re not available to play. Oh – and the same functionality will be available via a web-interface for those without a poncy phone thing. More details and a brief interview follows…

The demo for iPhone and iPad was shown at PAX this year, showing basically the real-time world-map display, where you can follow your friends around and watch as the dynamic events kick off. Also, chat with everyone on the friends list, so you can just shoot the proverbial and share information. So, if you scroll around the map, you can find locations and then give the knowledge back to people in game – eventually via ping! sort of thing. In other words, this opens a brave new world where you’re being bullied by your Guild Mates for your knowledge 24-7. Hurrah! They’re working on adding the ability to browse characters in a hero view, revealing their stats and equipment, including the source of the artefact. Basically, to start with, it’s a program that allows you to interact with the mass of information in the game and watch events play out, live.

RPS: Top level – the motivation for trying to do this?

Christian Vestøl: Our motivation and goal is to allow gamers to progress and socialize outside the confines of the PC gaming rig. People have real lives, and when they can’t play their favorite game, they still find ways of “staying in touch” with it on forums, websites, IM with guildies, etc. The Guild Wars 2 Extended Experience not only gives gamers better tools for staying in touch, it actually allows them to participate in the game in a relatable and meaningful way. Why not actively participate in the game instead of just participating on forums?

RPS: Could you give some examples of how the functionality has altered the play experience internally at ArenaNet?

Christian Vestøl: What we’ve shown so far are more social tools which don’t yet have a large impact on the player experience. As our features flesh out, they will definitely have an impact, and we’ll try to share these with the community as they happen.

RPS: You can watch your friends in game, playing live… is this actually a larger thing, so you can spectate on “the big matches” live? So, as a website, could we say “We’re going on an adventure… you can use your client to watch?”

Christian Vestøl: Yes, the world map application can track any number of players; we just were showing off friends. It currently shows a single game area at one time, so if you are tracking players that have left the area, you’ll have to specifically zoom to them. Otherwise, the app will follow whichever player you desire.

RPS: From what you’re talking about so far, it’s basically information sharing, seeing the world and chat. Can you give any hints about what sort of interactive-possibilities you can see from the extended apps?

Christian Vestøl: Ultimately, our plan is to provide as much of the PC experience as we can on mobile devices. Of course, it won’t be the same experience until mobile platform hardware reaches parity with gaming PCs, but there are already a lot of incredible games and features on mobile devices right now. The technology is evolving very quickly, and we plan on fully exploiting advances in mobile hardware to create a compelling overall gameplay experience.

RPS: Thanks for your time.

Played the GW2 stress test yesterday. Not bad, it gets a little zerg, but is a lot like Rift in that way.
Like I said $60 with no monthly fee, why the fuck not?

I did prefer ranged classes, as with melee by the time you run up to the mob, its dead.
