The first time I ever heard of this game was today. Apparently, someone paid $330k for some virtual property in the game. Is this like Second Life or something? I suppose I can read more, but was curious if anyone played it.

Here's the article about the auction:
Quote:
Remember a while back when we mentioned that the Crystal Palace Space Station went up for sale in Planet Calypso, marking the start of another insane bidfest to claim what could be a very real source of income? Well, the auction is over and the winner has been declared -- Buzz "Erik" Lightyear has taken control of Crystal Palace for the very, very hefty sum of 3,300,000 PED. For those of you who want to know the real world value, you're looking at a cool 330,000 dollars.

While this seems insane (and it probably is, to some degree), Mr. Lightyear will be looking at revenue coming in from the hunting conducted on the space station, plus the purchases made there. In short, this space station is a walking money generator, especially as it's the only place to find alien body parts used to make high-end armor. All Buzz has to do is let the station run, set a decent tax rate, keep it stocked with things to hunt, and he can take all the PED he earns and translate it into cold, hard cash.

For all of the bidding insanity, check out the full coverage of the auction over at Entropia Planets.

Can we do this for my Traveler's Tundra Mammoth please? Give me the revenue and let me convert to RL cash. Sigh!

I never understood why you couldn't get some sort of kickback from that vendor. Just more of Blizzard being Blizzard.

I was going to say if the guy really has that much money to blow around, more power to him... but interesting to see that it sounds like he plans on making it all back and then some. This type of thing has happened in games like Second Life for years, but this is a pretty damned big chunk of cash by virtual standards =x

I'm looking forward to the day when e-sports are even more of an accepted norm, rather than viewed as nothing but an e-peen contest. It'll happen, but it'll take about the same amount of time(if not more) that it took for gaming to become the mainstream thing that it became near the turn of the century.

Now if we could just do something about those ultra-nerd announcers during tournaments...

Just get Olivia Munn and Layla Kayley to be announcers and it's golden.

I played that game for about 3 weeks, kinda of interesting at first, but wow, is it tough on your visa. You need new gear, or repair gear, or training it all costs credits, pretty much the only way to get these easily is buy plugging your credit card into a handy terminal in game and buying a stash of credits.
