Star Trek Online: Set Phasers To Excited!

I would have blogged about this sooner, but I've been waiting for more information. I'm extremely looking forward about this game. Set phasers to excited! Warp factor thrill! Beam me up anticipation! And so on, but my excitement if for several reasons:

1) I'm a huge, huge star trek fan. I'm bordering on being a full blown trekkie if it wasn't for the face my wife would make a disaproving face if I did anything remarkably geeky. My knowledge of most things trek wise is encyclopedic, let alone my DVD collection. I challenge people to quiz me in the comments section, I promise I won't cheat.

2) We need a decent space MMO. EVE online is okay if you like playing with spreadsheets and watching some vague metallic object shoot lasers at rocks for 2 hours. From what I've seen space combat in ST:O is looking very similar to Starfleet Command, which hands down was one of the best Star Trek games ever.

And how many MMOs generally fall into the "grind, kill these, level up character, continue", ST:O seems to be doing something different to the main stereotype of MMOs. You have ground and space based missions, and rather than upgrade your character, you upgrade your bridge crew and ship with different items/skills. These come into play when doing missions either in space or on away missions.

Here's some of the things we know so far that will be in Star Trek Online

You can choose between Federation or the Klingon Empire to start with. Either side will let you have a customised character, possibly being a mercenary for the Empire's part.
Takes place in the TNG timeline, 30 years after Star Trek: Nemesis.
Different configurations of starships will be unlocked as you play, also every starship can be modified to give the user a unique look.

The galaxy can be explored, new systems being generated for users. So one player may discover a completely new starsystem before anyone else, and it will last on the galactic map. These new planets and systems can be named by the discoverer
Fleets are the game's version of Guilds
Missions will feature both scripted and proceduraly generated content.
There will also be dynamic events such as Borg invasions.
Space battles are similar to Starfleet Command, where your weapons will have limited arcs and battles depend on which way your ship is facing. Different shield banks will degrade so you have to keep thinking about your positioning and which systems you allocate power towards.
There will be PVP at launch.

From what I've seen of videos and screenshots this game is going to look good too. There's no release date set yet, but damn, I'm excited!

"Aft shields at 50%, main phaser banks firing! Hull breach on deck 16!"

Glee!

This game has no hope of being anything but a beacon for overly obsessed Trekkies.

STO uses the same engine Champions Online does, just reskinned with Star Trek Models.

The space combat looks terrible, and I'd like to point out that pretty much no Federation or Klingon ship can maneuver like an X-Wing (and the game won't support Joystick play).

While on the subject of combat...ST has never been known for its stellar combat in any medium. Sure, from time to time some phasers are being fired or Worf is slicing a bitch up with a bat leth...(hating to make more comparisons to Star Wars) it isn't like there are huge epic ground assaults or intense lightsaber duels.

I assume this is different from the Star Trek DAC game that came with the Blu-Ray of the movie. Also it appears (from the logo on the back) to be an XBOX 360 copy, which is lol because PS3 owners have Blu-Ray players, 360 owners have Halo 15.

Closed Beta started Oct 22nd apparently, only people who were invited as far as I'm aware were people who did the 6 month/12 month/Lifetime subscriptions to Champions Online...

Open Beta is dated from January 12th to the 26th...and release is Feb 2nd. So the game is getting less then 6 months of Beta before release. Its almost like they want this game to fail OR they're so confident that Trekkies will flock to this like the second coming of the Shatner-Christ it'll give them a financial windfall.

It's sad to see this come to fruition after all this time. Maybe if it had come out back when EQ was in it's 2nd or 3rd year people would actually be excited for it, but now it's just puzzling. Do they really think they are going to pull people in from other MMOs or are they hoping to get new people interested? Most trekkies are quite old now I'd assume, and maybe a casual person will pick it up because of the new movie but I really can't foresee this game going anywhere, which is a shame really to have such a big name like Star Trek flop over and die after all the money invested in it.

Oh well.

I was somewhat impressed with the video. Obviously there's a lot more to flesh out, but some of those concepts look pretty nice. From the look of it this won't be a game for button mashers, but will instead focus on strategy and tactical prowess in battle. Thumbs up for that decision. After reading a little more about it some of the ideas their throwing out sound interesting, particularly being able to beam aboard enemy ships and fight onboard.

I've always found the Star Trek universe far more intellectually stimulating than Star Wars. Star Wars is more or less the poor man's Star Trek - it's made to appeal to the mass audience with more action-oriented storylines and characters that try desperately to pull in the average joe. The occasional Star Trek storyline will actually make me use my brain once in a while, but I can't think of any piece of Star Wars literature/movie/animation that actually caused me to exit auto-pilot viewing/reading.

My hope is that they will actually cater to that nerdy crowd and create an MMORPG with a rich, non-linear universe that doesn't necessarily focus on the hacknslash formula used for so long, but rather attempts to flesh out a living breathing space. I mean, the combat actually looks fun but I hope it doesn't end there.

Well, I only said it was far more stimulating. Star Wars leaves me with none, so that leaves me with no place to go but up =) I can't think of anything particularly interesting that Star Wars has that Star Trek doesn't. More action I guess?

Quote:
GameStop
GameStop customers receive the ability to command the exclusive and always classic USS Enterprise from Star Trek The Original Series.

Best Buy
Best Buy is offering their customers a fun in-game pet. As a Federation Captain, players own a famed Tribble of Star Trek lore that will accompany them on their travels into the final frontier. As a Klingon commander, players control the boar-like Targ, a beast found on the Klingon home world of Qo’noS.

Amazon
Amazon is offering an exclusive “Liberated Borg” Bridge Officer. This bridge officer, who comes with unique nanotechnology augmentations, assists in missions and gains experience as the player does.

Wal-Mart
With the Wal-Mart Bonus Skill Points package, receive addition skill points that enable players to improve their characters quickly.

Target
Target customers who pre-order Star Trek Online receive a unique ground weapon – a TR-116. This rare projectile weapon is used in dampening fields and other challenging environments; it is also modified with a micro-transporter which beams the fired projectiles to targets at close range so that a user can fire without a direct line of site.

Direct2Drive
Direct2Drive customers receive an exclusive Multi-Spatial Personal Shield. This advanced personal shield system is based on Borg technology, which constantly regenerates itself and the health of its wearer.

STEAM
STEAM is offering customers Chromodynamic Armor. This armor is based on technology brought back from the Delta Quadrant by U.S.S. Voyager improves the damage and critical hits of energy weapons.

Read this right kids....THE ENTERPRISE vs a Pet vs A FUCKING BORG BOT (which levels with you) vs more skill points vs weapon vs a shield vs armor. I wonder which Store is going to get more preorders?

The USS Enterprise would be cool to have, but I'm sure it's just a "n00b ship" and would quickly be replaced by something better (assuming you upgrade ships in the game).

The “Liberated Borg” Bridge Officer seems more compelling to me.

Channel with lots of ST:O vids there. Space combat looks very Earth and Beyondish. Ground combat, meh. Except for holy shit yessssssss, Klingons with Bat'leths.

I'm going to be a Klingon, and fly a Bird of Prey by the way. Don't care how bad the game is going to suck. Free month is worth it just for that.

The game is a fucking abortion.

The ground game (away mission) is carbon fucking copy of Champions Online. If you played that even for a microsecond, you'll be able to figure out pretty fucking quick how the entire game works. As a Tactical Officer, you start out with a Phaser with 2 settings...Damage and Stun. As a 3rd skill, you get Palm Strike...which is a god damned knockdown ability if enemies get into melee range. So you can stun and knockdown at level 1. Literally, its CO with Star Trek skins.

The space game is even worse. The ships move like old people fucking even at top speeds, and all you do in space combat is mash spacebar (fire phasers) until the enemies shields are down then you mash 2 for torpedoes...

I feel bad for Star Trek fans, because I don't think this game is good enough to wipe the sweat from William Shatner's ballsack let alone release as an MMO. Cryptic/Atari are probably banking on millions of Preorders to at least break even...because this game has little to no future.

Not much more to it than mashing the spacebar? That would be a shame =/ Slower-paced space combat was the one thing I was really looking forward to with this game. Never played YetAnotherHeroMMORPGOnline so not sure how the missions will shape up. I'll probably give it a try anyway just for shits and giggles. This game was/is my last hope for a good space MMO until Star Wars Old Republic since EVE online bores me to death.

Yeah, the mashing spacebar thing is probably my biggest gripe.

Basically, your starter ship has Forward and Aft Phasers. Based on where an enemy is in relation to how your ship is positioned, you fire either or both phasers. Since you've also got to worry about your shields (1 for each side of the ship), you can't just say position yourself so you can always hit the enemy with both phasers or they'll eat through your Port/Starboard shields too quickly.

So fighting an enemy ship basically entails moving your ship (which again is slower then dog shit...yes I realize Federation ships aren't X-Wings but they are still far too slow) around the enemy in circles mashing spacebar to fire your phasers to break down their shields. Once their shields are down, you mash 2 for Torpedoes to do Haul Damage to kill them.

My second gripe is the imbalance between Higher Level Ship Enemies. I tore through 2 even level ships but got my ass totally fuckin toasted by 1 ship that was +1 level from me. I'm assuming the reason for this being that the enemy ship had far more 'Ship Skills' then I did.

I'm still fucking around with the game until the OB ends. I'm a glutton for punishment, but Capt Carlos Spicywiener of the USS Bonerjams must go on!

I got one of those 10 day passes and the game is interesting to say the least. Not bad at all and I'm having fun. It's better with more people on space missions that is for sure. Solo can be slow and drags, but get 3 to 6 people and bam it's good fun.

Ground combat is not that bad, but it really feels like a KOTOR single player game. There were only two times where I was in a group of people to play a mission. More fun with more people, but it's rare I have help on ground missions. Space seems more common tho. Still, most missions are single without much interaction with other gamers. STO does not feel like a MMO to more for the most part.

The pacing seems good so far. I might cont after the 10 days are up...we will see

Gave it a spin. Really likes nice but the skill / item system is so horrid. The in-game info is so lacking and the forums info is all 5 months old, is it still up-to-date? No clue can't verify it with in-game info....

1. Skill system + item system never really explained well enough for a new player without heavy research on the forums... much of which is out-of-date and does not apply.

- Stat type items are worthless without a skill that uses it. Ok. What skills do I get, crap need to research. Hmmm... this thread is 5 months old, wonder if it still works.
- Wonder if STO has a spread sheet of Skills / stats used. Dang that was hard to find... doh it only shows BO skills. Oh I need to research those too now... etc. Hmm 5 month old spreadsheet... sigh.

2. What information is available in game (Tool Tips / Filters) to help you work through it all... Can't be trusted or is very lacking.

- Sweet a Mk VI suit. Gah why can't I wear it. Oh the icon is wrong the tool tip says VII.
- AAAArgh I just spent all my money on Dual Cannons for my new Assault Cruiser. Cause it says on the tool tip it can equip it
- So if I read all my skill tool tips I'll be able to figure this out! Examples of abilities that this skill uses.... &^%$. Why not -tell me all the abilities ! So I spend all my skill points here and find out it means zero there.
-Deflector Shield! Sweet that will help my survivability... nope only if associated with an ability. Sweet what ability? Figure it out. I'm fine with figuring games out when they make sense.... does the deflector shield not help with base ship shield at all?

3. Anomalies spawning under the ground. Making it impossible to scan for mission targets, as the anomaly can not be gathered.

4. Alt-Tabbing to 2nd monitor unlocks my mouse from the game. Meaning my mouse doesn't stay strictly in-game after I Alt-Tab back. Moving the camera with no mouse pointer (from the button holding) and trying to keep it on screen.....doesn't work well. And I end up needing to restart. Never had this problem with any other game.

- I did find a work-around. Video settings > Full Windowed then back to Full screen fixes it. But that takes a minute or 2 to do and that's every time I Alt-Tab to research....
