I had hoped for something unique (and good) out of FFXIV seeing as FFXI did a lot poorly but also did a lot well that no one else did... but damn they just blew their creative load on the graphics and seem to have no idea what kind of actual game to put in them.

Think the mrs. and I are gonna give the open beta a run (she was playing my closed beta for a bit). If anyone wants to tag along on the voyage of betafail, let's find a server to consolidate on.

Who the fuck thought it was acceptable in 2010 to implement a crafting system that gives you no idea where you should go or what to do in order to find recipes to skill up on. I mean I guess you could reuse the recipes you use when you do crafting leves but I know they sure as fuck don't expect people to use that only or buy random materials to try to slop shit together. Am I missing something? Also if you disconnect/crash while in the middle of a leve, you automatically fail and are unable to replace that leve for 48 hours. Mouse + Keyboard is still terrible too. You go into a menu and you have to click the X button to close the window? What, did you assholes forget what the escape key was for? Holy shit.

The people on the FFXI forums are quick to say, "IT'S BETA YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT ANY OF THIS SHIT BECAUSE IT'S BETA, EVERYTHING WILL BE FIXED BY RELEASE BUT IT'S BETA! HAVEN'T YOU EVER BETA TESTED BEFORE?! hurf durf"

This game is going to fail so hard. It's ok though, they have HD Mithra ass.

Haha I tried registering for an open beta account probably 10 different times since it opened up yesterday and kept getting server error - just now I finally don't get a server error and tell them that yes I live in the Americas and it gives me:

"Applications for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test have been temporarily suspended. Please wait until we are ready to accept new applications and then try again."

My desire to give a shit has been fully used up and is now gone, GL Square!

Going to see if I can squeeze my way into the open beta out there since EQ2's skill-less abilitymasher is boring the shit out of me and WoW is dead until Cata. I'm crossing my fingers that it isn't quite that bad, because there's shit else to do in the way of MMORPGs =/ Don't get me wrong, my hopes aren't high since I've rarely heard a positive thing about the game from any source. /sigh

It's more along the lines that I'm shocked that at this point in gaming they still can't stop making absolutely shitty games. I mean they've got the track record of Meridian59, UO, EQ, DOAC, AO, Horizons, EqII, FFXI, WoW, LOTOR, etc.....and they still go on and on making horrid games. You'd think at some point someone that had grown up playing all these different MMO's would develop something that has a bit of everything in it while avoiding the utter fuckups each game made.

I am so goddamn tired of WoW.

Get EQ2, start on AB server, and enjoy. It's not perfect, but it's the best thing going....

Also, any CE's out there that would like to share a Guest key? Not sure why I even want to bother but I guess where it's FF, I have to at least try it. haha

Best part about that video is 90% of it is nitpicky bullshit and not even close to being one of the games glaring flaws.

Thankfully the JP reviews are starting to hit and Tojo is angry. Maybe this means we'll get a fucking auction house like should have went in to begin with. And a functioning UI. It's 10% complete, 90% dogshit.

Well I lasted almost a week. Figured about that. Sig is as far as I could go. There just isn't anything to play here. Everything is a fight with this game. Fighting the UI, fighting the horrible inter-dependably between tradeskills with virtually no communication tools in a system designed to promote and require such. Having to justify logging in by telling yourself "Self, today I will acomplish a few short term goals." because that's how you have to plan everything in this game.

It's a beautiful game, and the class system is amazing. Unfortunatly everything else sucks shit. In six months when the PS3 version drops we'll see where they stand, but it's not far fetched to say that the game doesn't want you to play it at all right now, because it goes out of its way to be a snooty cunt.

I did have fun, don't get me wrong. It just won't hold a western audience. It wont even hold the american otaku crowd who love anything that stinks of japan. What's the point? 11 is a far superior game in every way and outside of the graphics, you can get everything that 14 offers there only better.

Post subject:  Re: FF XIV

Reports are that even the Japanese audience is less than enthused, and if the amazon.jp ratings are anything to go by, those reports are probably correct.

Tombstone Doc Holliday quote.... by far the best thing in this thread. In other news, I have yet to hear one positive review on this game. It is to the point that the game isn't even selling now. My friend owns a comic shop and they are actually one of our leading gaming shops as well and they haven't moved a box since the discussions had hit the shop.

Such a sad thing. They have probably one of the greatest IP's in gaming history and they just blow it. Not surprising to me as I feel they haven't hit a homerun with the FF name in years.

I don't really agree with that at all. They have a great brand. But unless I'm missing something, there's really not a whole lot that ties the various FF games together from an IP standpoint. Chocobos? ;)

Author:  MuliganVanJurai [ Wed Oct 06, 2010 7:44 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: FF XIV

This is because of how well they have hidden a great thing.

When I think of their IP I think of a pre-made class system (Dragoon, White Wizard, Black Wizards, Paladins, Thieves, etc.), Airships, the Moon (Luna), incredible races, musical score, summons, villains, and so so much more.

There are a lot of underlying themes to FF that the later FF's cover up. If you look more at the early FF's, FF Tactics, and their re-releases you'll see the foundational pieces that make FF.

It's really not surprising.

Final Fantasy has always been a great storytelling platform first and a decent game second. Yeah, they're enjoyable, but - aside from Tactics - I wouldn't call any of them "great" from a gaming standpoint.

So it really comes as no surprise that when they try to move to a MMO format - a format that is all about gameplay, balance, content, etc - that they flop around in confusion.

FFXI pulled it off reasonably well. Aside from the typical complaints of their levelling system being a grind, and quite restrictive (i.e. penalties if your group has people over 3 levels apart), they did really well. The combat animations were fantastic - if you've never seen a Dark Knight guillotine an enemy, or a Dragoon high jump a giant, it's really something to watch. Even the first time you see a Summoner bring forth Ifrit it's somewhat "whoa"-worthy.
And the cutscenes added a whole new level of storytelling to their campaign quests - something that many other games still don't have. In EQ2, for example, you enter Charasis to see Drusella Sathir sitting there staring at you. As though she's just been hanging out for the past 1000 years. Change that to an empty room that blacks out to a cutscene of her emerging from a crypt in all her fury, and you suddenly set the mood for a really nail-biting fight.

Trust me, there's a lot that FFXI did right with regards to MMOs.
We're so disappointed because everything that made FFXI looks to be missing from FFXIV. Which is effing sad.

WoW could take a page from that too. I love walking into a boss room with boss standing in the center of the room scratching his ass and watching as 25 people casually sit, eat and get into starting positions w/out batting an eyelash.

The Good: Impressive visual engine. Flexible class system lets you be what you want, when you want.

The Bad: Absolutely miserable interface. Does a poor job of communicating important information. Limited questing means you're always looking for something fun to do. Everything about the economy stinks. Every aspect of the game is filled with dumb obstacles.
