TF2 meets Planetside with a side order of OH GOD MY BALLS ARE SPEWING SPERM IN SEXUAL RAPTURE.

I think the world is ready for this type of MMO again. I do think that these types of games are the hardest to get right, but oh god, I want to believe.

One giant world that everyone plays in means "hopfuly" a metric fuckton of potential combat at all hours of the day.

Due out mid/late 2009. At least something to watch, if not look forward to. I'm sure people will need something after the month it takes for Uldar to become old. Might be one to watch and be a sleeper hit.

Yea I heard about this a few weeks ago. A part of me isn't confident that this development team has what it took for Planetside, but it could happen. I'm not expecting a miracle but if they could include some of the key aspects that Planetside had to offer it could at least be fun for a while.

It's not really like Planetside in anyway. It's much closer to a traditional fps or Guild Wars in terms of scale. Right now combat doesn't go any higher than 12v12. There is some stuff that involves larger groups of players, but they still get split up into different instances that are 12v12.

It still looks like it has lots of potential, but it's more like Tribes with a persistent world, earning experience to unlock new skills and weapons, and guilds. If they can pull it off it will be great.

I don't really understand how much of what they claimed in that video mesh with 12v12 max battles.

I assume it meshes because you take over those bits of the world by participating in "missions", which would consist of 12v12 battles. The only thing I'm confused about is the persistent world and how much of that is actually freeform and allows larger fighting within. Maybe it's just a large non-fighting "hub" for stuff like buying items and bases captured that you can go to? Could happen, but I doubt it.

Still, my hopes are dashed for nostalgia when it came to those incredibly epic battles in Planetside... I remember a particularly good time when our team was on our last base and we defended it down to the last corridor. It was interesting to see the battles take place as more and more ground was given and defensive perimeters were put up. Guess we won't be seeing that kind of action here, but who knows, 12v12 in a persistent world could be quite interesting if they do it all right - particularly with the right progression and RPG elements =)

12 vs 12 makes me think red team vs blue team. It doesn't make me think player driven world. They also said you can be a traitor, so 12 vs 12 may in reality just be 16 v 8 or something

yawn. 12v12 is soooo fucking console. Early Planetside battles were EPIC. If you played Emerald, you remember having the Enclave zerg somewhere while those of us in 1CMM, Liberty, etc, were busy conducting surgical strikes with the solid players backing the key bases.

Every competitive FPS on the PC is played at 5v5 or 6v6. 12v12 is plenty of people. It allows for much tighter combat and quick back and forth action instead of long, drawn out slug fests where explosive spam is all that's important.

The layout of the game world is somewhat similar to Guild Wars. There's social zones and agency headquarters where players can run around outside of combat. Then all the combat is in instanced zones and territories that are fought over by alliances.

dev posting from their forums:
Quote:
Agencies will hold up to about 100 people
Alliances can hold 100+ agencies

So at least for the initial testing, you can form a group as large as you want.

Territories are grouped into zones

Each zone has 100-400 territories to fight over

There can be as many zones as needed.

There is also PVE combat vs. NPC bots, but I don't think they've released much info about it yet. The devs have also mentioned some kind of VR missions or training areas.

Quote:
Most standard PvP missions take about 15-20 minutes.

Base raids have three stages, the first stage takes 15-45 minutes, second and third stages take about 15 minutes each.

The base raids are the 60v60 battles that get split up into individual instances capped out at 12v12. Apparently the attackers and defenders will have some kind of a commander than can allocate players to specific fighting areas. The bases inolved are controlled by individual agencies, but anyone in the same alliance as the agency involved can help out. Agencies also have headquarters that are customizable to some degree.

There's a post on their forums that has a good collection of information about the game: http://forum.globalagendagame.com/phpbb ... =71&t=2888

I'm all for tight-knit combat, but there should really be both. I assume the 60v60 is never *actually* 60v60.

Do something akin to Wintergrasp - the hugeass battle is important, but most of the main progression-based combat takes place in the 12v12 arenas. And it takes place in the main "hub world" every few hours. That would at least give a persistent alive feel for the "persistent" game world outside the instances.

Or even instead of the Wintergrasp idea just put up some capturable cities/bases for agencies to take over. Nothing was quite as cool as knowing that at any time of the day someone could launch a surgical strike on your keep in something like DAOC. I remember hearing about people keeping track of cell phone numbers for shit like that. Not that you'd lose everything if you failed to defend, but it would add a sense of persistence.

Meh, I've all but given up on developers making sense these days =/

If it were anything like Tribes I'd be sold. If it were anything like Tabula Rasa, it would be a shame.

Isn't Sony developing some "revolutionary" FPS for PS3/PSN?

They displayed it at E3 the last 2 years I believe...

I think it's MAG, Massive Action Game. It's supposed to have 256 players at a time.

It's on a console, so who really cares.

MAG looks nice.. good graphics. Though, with 256 players, you'd have to knock the detail down a lot to make it playable on a laptop like mine. I found a screenshot of what that'd look like:

Fair point. Detail needs to be knocked down a lot more in that pic, then.
