Call me cynical but I foresee this being another complete failure like the other Star Wars MMO...

I Hope not. BioWare does some very nice work, and maybe they will bring some more fresh blood to the MMO market...and a different take on the Star Wars story

Haha, that Star Wars MMO will not even come close to replacing WoW. Maybe for you, but not by and large. Hope you get what you want though!

Though for obvious reasons I'm excited to see that it is truly in development, I'm trying to remain as skeptical as my inner SW Geek will allow me to be. I was burned by Galaxies, bad. It left such a sour taste in my gamer mouth that I figured any SW MMO would be a failure.

Then I played KOTOR. KOTOR was like a shining beacon of light in a sea of total shit SW games.

If any part of the SW universe could be done as an MMO, its the Old Republic.

We'll see.

I think the whole StarWars pull is gone with the last few George Lucas abominations. Bioware is cool and all, KotOR is cool and all but, unless the just hit a MAJOR homerun, they might as well creep in the MMO shadows.

I think it will get some early subs and curiosity will really draw people towards the betas but they better hold onto that NDA due to the expectations and SWG past.

We will see all too soon.

Bioware gets the best of both worlds, they get a Star Wars property to play with without having Lucas dick around with it in his bat shit craziness.

If there's going to be a SW MMO worth a fuck Bioware will do it.

Bioware is the master of the Dialogue Box, but will they be able to make a nice MMO? This will be interesting to watch.

In 2012.

Well, 2012 should be interesting...

http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/10/2 ... ts-and-ea/

Quote:
Both EA and LucasArts have confirmed to VG247 that the target for BioWare’s newly announced Star Wars: The Old Republic is to make an MMO with a larger userbase than World or Warcraft.

...all I've got to say is, at least they've got a goal. Should be an interesting ride.

They better make the game appealing to the Asian market. I'm relatively sure that NA only makes up around 2 - 2.5 million of the 10 million sub base WoW boasts.

I don't know what the Korean, Japanese, etc. are going to do with WoW+expansions, SC2, Lineage II, etc., etc. peering over the horizon. They might as well forget real life starting around 2009 - 2015.

Exactly, Muligan. Is the Star Wars franchise popular in Asia? I have no idea, honestly... I know it's an acclaimed franchise worldwide, but in the same sense that Warcraft appeals to gamers worldwide? I suppose if the quality of the game is really that good, then it doesn't matter, but still.

I'm just not sure why they would suggest that goal right now when we're barely in the development/concept phase.

I'm sure StarWars is a big thing in Asia but that that doesn't mean they'll like the game. The Asian markets like aspects of games that the NA market does not.

I still do not understand how anyone can play a point-and-click MMO but, they seem to love them. I hope Bioware looks at their schedule, they better be really smart with their Beta's, NDA, and release. They could run right into a mess with some of the releases I mentioned above.

Personally, I'd rather have a fully completed single (or, gasp, coop!) KOTOR game than another MMO.

I loved the two KOTORs, but damn, can't they just finish them?

I don't know how I feel about that.

I double don't know about how I feel about Lucas wanting a large say in creative control.

Lucas is past his prime and out of his league. He was innovative in the 80's but now in the corner. So many stories and movies have left him setting under a pile of mediocre decisions.

This game is going to have huge hurdles to jump and this generation of gamers are extremely intolerant. Tarot is right in saying people will buy it and probably most of us will but Age of Conan went the same way. Everyone can get tickets to ride the biggest and greatest boat but that doesn't mean it will sail or the passengers jump off.

Did they mention any of the Lore/time frame on this ? just curious.

I'm presuming its during the 2nd Sith/Jedi war before the Rule of 2 was instituted by the Sith

ie.s 1 Sith Lord and 1 Sith apprentice only at a time, for those not familiar with the Rule of 2.

Why I got my nerd on there didn't I :?

Malak? 300 years later? Isn't Malak killed, no matter which path you choose in KOTOR1?

Sounds like it's the "real" Sith this time.

I had a quick read on the official Bioware Old Republic boards lastnight about this, and Leo's idea was the general consensus there as well. Chances are it's not Malak, as he was killed in KoTOR 1 and it's not commonplace for Bioware to rehash old villains in their games.

In other news, it was mentioned in their FAQ that you will be facing numerous issues in the game as you progress, and that your decisions could end up with you changing factions (i.e. a Jedi turning towards the Dark Side), so the option will be there for you to switch sides, for anyone curious.

*edit*
PS - some info on the actual gameplay found here:

Darth Malak

Image
Sith Lord in the trailer

According to all sources, Darth Malak died during the battle between him and Revan at the Starforge in the finale of KOTOR.

However, the bigger rumors are that Darth Revan is the 'Sith Emperor' mentioned in the lore surrounding the game. There's a small bit of evidence that points to this. Revan left for the Unknown Regions to after the events of KOTOR to confront the ancient Sith Empire, but was never heard from again. The theory is that when he arrived, he joined the Sith there rather then tried to destroy them.

In the books about Darth Bane, Bane travels to Rakata Prime (the planet that the Starforge orbited, which in Bane's time is called Lehon) after being guided by old Sith texts which spoke of great power there. In the ruins of the Temple of the Ancients, he found Darth Revan's Holocron...from which he learned a tremendous amount of ancient Sith Magic/Darkside Powers (including the Thought Bomb). While it is implied in KOTOR that Revan was indeed powerful at the time of his first reign, one would think that he had to have studied somewhere for an extensive period time to learn what he eventually scribed into the Holocron.

A side from that, look at the Sith who're fighting the Jedi in the trailer. Quite a few of them are wearing Masks/faceguards that resemble the one Revan wore during his reign. Suggesting that either they took inspiration from him or were lead by him (either at the time of the game, or sometime previous).

Enough nerd lore from me...

Bane was also the sith who initiated the "Rule of Two" method to keep all the sith from imploding on themselves generation after generation.

I don't know if I'd call Malak's mouthpiece a mask or a faceguard... more like an artificial jawbone. Given Sith "training" rites, I don't think that's enough of a coincidence to assume anything.

In Malak's case it was a cover to hide his voice synthesizer (and his lack of a lower jaw), but I was talking about in the trailer...if you look closely at the Sith coming out of the transport, the masks they wear look like Revans.
