Well not FFXI specifically, but the amendment to the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act passed this week makes it an unlawful business practice to run an internet gaming service without some way of canceling the service online, without requiring customers to call a phone number or mail a letter.

I can understand how this came about. When my account was banned for "Terrain Exploits" I tried to call them to ensure that my account was in fact cancelled and I wasn't going to be billed at the next billing cycle. I spent more then 30 minutes on hold after having to dig through the box and manual for the correct "Non-International" number to call.

It should be as easy to cancel as it is to sign up. Of course they make more money if it's not.

Good law change! (And yes FFXI was such a bitch to cancel)

XBox Live doesn't even have a cancel button. You have to call the 1-800 number. Hopefully this will force them to!

People were passing out and getting physically ill. We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible new story about how video games ruin people’s lives.

Sylphet has also informed me that several members of BtL actually ended up vomiting by the end of the night from their intense focusing with no breaks for 18 hours.

I call bullshit.

As far as it being real and intended? Yeah I believe it. The Japs won't even look at a game or anything unless it punches you in the balls over and over so this isn't far fetched for them at all.

I mean for christ's sake, they still play Ultima Online.

Dear Pet Food Alpha,
Spending 18 hours trying to kill a "monster" should mean that your mothers should have drowned you at birth.

Get a life.

I mean, seriously. They WILLINGLY sat there for 18 hours. Nobody forced them. And not only that, they now have the audacity to blame Square Enix for creating a fight that's detrimental to their own health?!?

OldGrif on that website wrote:
To endure 18 hours of battle and sacrifice your day (and health) to doing this is the ultimate signal from Square Enix that they despise their paying customers.

Maybe that should read "To endure 18 hours of battle and sacrifice your day (and health) is a sign of fucking lunacy".

What is it about today's society where we blame everyone else for our own stupidity?!?
That mentality is akin to sueing a wetsuit company for a faulty wetsuit after a shark bit your leg off because you were baiting it with chunks of bloody fish. Or that it was an architect's fault for designing a bridge that you could jump off of.

Bunch of effing idiots.

Shit, if they willingly sat there for that, they need to be culled from society. On the other hand, if that encounter was really designed to be 18 hours long, Square Enix needs to be slapped down if for no other reason than they stop designing shit like that. I like FFXI in concept. I couldn't play it past level 10 (I didn't have a team bro or anything like that) but it was a really neat world and story. I'd like to see more from them, but I don't want to have to neuter myself in the process.

Did they ever consider that maybe the encounter wasn't working exactly properly and maybe they should just let it go around the 1-hour mark? I mean, it's not Blizzard's fault if I spend 20 hours attacking an evading mob and then bitch at them for creating a 20-hour encounter. =O

Just a guess though. Who knows, maybe they really did design it to take that long.

I think its refreshing if not slightly insane...

As long as it isn't tied to any form of progression and has ungodly rewards why not. If I played the game I would try to do it once just to have done it on a weekend I just wanted some R&R.

I think it would be better for a hard bitch ass fight that was in stages for maybe 4-6 hours MAX before you cross the lines of insanity of marathon raiding. But this is a JP game afterall.....

And while it sounds absurd may I remind you there are people that go run 26 miles for "fun", there are people that swim across large lakes "for fun", some people truly like an extreme event. I'll gladly admit I've played a video game for 18 hours straight but I sure as fuck don't fall into any of the categories mentioned above(I wanted that fucking FBSS OK!!!). Some people just like to do things to the extreme. If SE can provide enough content to keep everyone happy and throw in something like this..../shrug doesn't hurt anyone from the sounds of it on the progression side etc. Its one of those things some people might view as enduring once to say they did it just like SO MANY other things in life. Those that don't want to don't have to....

The development team has been listening intently to feedback from players, and working hard to address concerns such as the following:
"I can't party effectively with my friends or linkshell members because our levels are too far apart!"
"I invited one of my friends to play FFXI with me, but we can't party together because we don't have any jobs at similar levels!"
"I can't find anyone close enough to my level to party with!"

This little piece here seriously infuriates me. You talk about being late to the party, Jesus.

They forgot to add "My friend just leveled and it completely ruined our group exp. Our 300 exp per chain just went to at most, 72."

Jesus Christ, they thought it would be a good idea to do this NOW, when everyone has already left?

How awesome this would have been way back when we actually loved this game so much, it hurt to quit because we were being forced away.

Seriously. :/ I don't recall how many times I just sat around in Jeuno trying to figure out a group with the right people within 2 levels of each other. Fucking game. Fucking FFXI. Fucking Squeenix.

Nice feature. EQ2's has this ingame for quite some time ("mentoring" system), and I'd imagine a couple other games do as well.

Given FFXI's limitations for a lot of encounters (i.e. BCNMs come to mind), not having to have equipment of that level and being able to scale down (as long as you have someone else of the appropriate level) could be very, very nice.
And, of course, the ability to gain xp together no matter what level you are.

But as others have said, this should have been implemented a LONG time ago.

Late response: Nah, I used 3rd person the whole time. It still takes absolutely forever to turn the camera in FFXI. Opposed to any other MMORPG, even EQ I think, it's just one quick wrist flick in 0.0001 seconds and you've turned 180 degrees.

Nothing like having to "lock on" to mobs just to fight them either =/
