July 17, 2008 - Reports surfaced today that EA CEO John Riccitiello confirmed that LucasArts and BioWare were indeed working on a Knights of the Old Republic MMO. Though it's been widely assumed that the developer and publisher were working on a Star Wars MMO based on the Knights of the Old Republic universe, this is the first time anyone has officially confirmed it.

When contacted about the statement, BioWare deferred to LucasArts whose representatives told us that they currently have "nothing to announce" regarding their association with BioWare. Even with both parties staying quiet on the issue, it's hard to discount Riccitiello's statements regarding the new game.

We'll dig into this a bit deeper and bring you more updates as soon as we can.

KOTOR goes Massive

Yeah, I mean, we know it's coming eventually. Something like that doesn't even look like good press.

This isn't the first time that I've seen reports by high up people at whatever company and its just been regular rumor mill.

Like announcing another Porky's.

If they can avoid half the mistakes SWG made, it will be a great achievement. Star Wars is very rich in content and fun activities everyone wants to take part in. Therein lies the problem, as there is SO MUCH to put into the game, that it would probably tend to be a huge turd if you tried to fit it all in.

Good luck to the KOTOR people. :p Hopefully I don't play it for a month like SWG and throw it away.

CEO Confirms it at E3

Though we've seen compelling evidence in the past, it's finally official: BioWare and LucasArts are working on an MMO based on the popular Knights of the Old Republic franchise. Portfolio.com interviewed EA boss John Riccitiello, who said that they have "two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development." The first he referred to was Warhammer Online, but what about the second? He said, "and the one people are dying for us to talk about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it." Just in case you're still skeptical, the interviewer then pressed by asking directly if he referred to a Knights of the Old Republic online game, and Riccitiello plainly said, "yes."

This isn't extremely surprising news, but at least it finally puts to rest all the speculation. There's no other information available yet, so any kind of release window is hard to pin down. While unconfirmed, the language of the story seems to suggest that the game will be headed to PCs. We'll let you know more as it comes.

Skepticism is high.

KOTOR was pretty good. Then again who'd have thought SOE could have tanked that shit so badly with SWG.

Personally I'd rather see KOTOR III, single player RPG.

They did.. It's called Mass Effect. Just like KOTOR but with originality.

Or Bioshock, which was Mass Effect remade without the cyberpunk (Ooo steampunk!) and more Ayn Rand. It wasn't really original...just more people have read Star Wars.

I think Zero Punctuation did the best review of it (though I liked Bioshock).

I also liked KOTOR II better than the original...but it was made by someone else, and it was shoved out the door prematurely. So it's fantastic until the end, which is like saying it was a great date, wonderful foreplay...but then they were a minute man in bed. There's really no recovery from that.

The company who made it (too lazy to look it up) without obviously back talking to LucasArts...released all the dialogue from the real endings, and made it clear the ending wasn't what they intended and basically nicely said how shit got fucked up (and how in reality it wasn't totally their fault).

Which is all well and good, but people were left with an incomplete game (IMO, it had an ending and was 'complete' but it was like a sudden dive off a cliff).

So...yeah. Still great, but could have been a 'best of all time' had it been finished.

I think the 'best' of the genre is actually Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It released buggy as hell (and pretty much doomed Trioka as a result), but it's been cleaned up and is still patch maintained by a team of volunteers. (Since with Troika going under it's abandoned otherwise).

If you haven't played it, it's worth picking up...I think you can get it for $20 off STEAM and then patch it with the volunteer patches (links off GameBanshee among other places).

I liked Jade Empire, though yes it's combat system sucked balls. I play such games for the story though and the various choices I can make. And I thought it had a good story and a lot of funny elements.
