Yep.

Sold my ipad 2 to gazelle two weeks ago for $300 in anticipation of a new ipad. I was not disappointed.

I'm still using my ipad1. I'm thinking I may get a 3 through work since we do much app development. Keeping my finders crossed.

The only reason I buy anything Apple related is because my company gets a significant employee discount since all of our laptops and desktops are Macs and I can usually get our purchasing group to let me use our discount code.

Yeah that does seem really fast. The mobile industry is notoriously slow-moving.

I think Apple doesn't so much consider the iPad a tablet as it does the next iteration of "PC"

I certainly have no need for a laptop since I started using an iPad. I've also tried using any number of other tablets -- none of them hold a candle to Apple in quality.

This will be the new pace, folks.

Back in the days when your computer fit under your desk, but not in your backpack, we all bought components. It was possible to upgrade a computer by finding its weaker links and replacing them with more powerful hardware, out to the limits of the platform. Eventually, every five years or so, you would find that the motherboard, the CPU, or the memory were maxed out and still the weak link -- and architectural changes meant that when you replace one of those twice a decade, you very likely replace all three.

Now, when Simmons in Research increases wireless range by 15% by using a different electroplating on the samophlange, they cannot improve your handheld computer. In order for you to get that performance improvement, you must buy a new tablet. The makers of enthusiast hardware aren't any happier about that state of affairs than you are, but Apple's model has never really gone for the modular concept anyway, so they're already prepared not to care.

So, the product cycle is 9 to 18 months, and 50% of the device you're buying is the old device with new component ID's and token tweaking. It doesn't increase prices much -- they already had factories tooled to make those things, so they just stamp out a few million more of the repeat sub-assemblies, and forward them to the new plant for installation in a new device.

I'd have probably bought a 2 for $300, hopefully this 4G LTE shows merit.

I already have a 4g MiFi from verizon, so I just went with the WiFi model. After 9 days with it, I fucking love this thing. I have already started looking for a buyer for my laptop, since I don't need the damn thing anymore.

seconded. It has also extended the battery life of my iPhone significantly as I am using it more often than not. Double Whammy.

Are you guys experiencing the "hot" effect that has been reported?

Author:  Vanamar [ Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:29 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: New iPad

if by "hot" you mean "slightly warmer than the ipad 2" then sure. But that only happens during extended use (at least for me)

The whole "virtual keyboard" thing is really that usable over a physical one? Hmm. Might give me a reason to stop using my damn android phone as a mini tablet.

Yes, it is, and always has been, at least for me.

The killer feature of the new ipad is the screen resolution, also at least for me. That makes it more usable as a day to day computer.

I still can't understand how it could replace a laptop.

Are you using it for work or personal stuff? Whichever it is, when you aren't mobile, do you have desktop alternative?

For me, "laptop" is synonymous with "work rig(s)," so when you say you get rid of your laptop, it sounds like the iPad is becoming your sole non-phone Internet appliance. This seems like it can't be so, hence my search for clarification.

Post subject:  Re: New iPad

I have both a desktop and a laptop computer (two laptops, technically, but one is for work only)

The ipad has replaced my personal laptop, to a lesser extent has replaced my work laptop (trade secrets and stuff that falls under my NDA have to stay on company hardware). My desktop has been mostly relegated to a dedicated gaming machine.

There is nothing I would normally need a personal laptop for that I can't do quicker on the ipad. Browsing, basic post processing of pictures (more complex tasks in that regard require Lightroom, but I can wait until I get home for that), document editing/review, remote administration of servers, teleconferencing via Skype, quick note taking (using the Wacom Bamboo Paper app and a stylus), and email are all I really needed a laptop for.

I still much prefer a laptop for any kind of editing of documents, or even posting in places like here. I get near 90 wpm typing on a real keyboard, and can't get close to that on a virtual one.
