General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger 30 mm seven-barrel cannon, mounted in nose with depression and an offset to keep firing on aircraft's centreline. The single drum magazine has a capacity of 1350 rounds, and has a dual firing rate of either 2100 or 4200 rounds per minute. Four pylons located under each wing (one inboard and three outboard), and three under fuselage Max external load of 7,257 kg (16,000 lb). Max external loadout with full internal fuel is at 5,482 kg (12,086 lb). The four outermost wing pylons also allows a wide range of stores to be loaded, including: 28 226 kg (500 lb) Mk 82 general purpose bombs BLU-1 or BLU-27/B Rockeye II cluster bombs CBU-52/71 AGM-65A Maverick missiles Mk 82 and Mk 84 laser-guided bombs Mk 84 electro-optically guided bombs SUU-23 pods, chaff or other jammer pods, or up to three drop tanks

the A-10 is a badass ground assault plane. It was designed to take out Soviet Tanks. The pilot sits in a titanium "bathtub" and the entire plane is double or triple redundant. The plane can fly and land with one engine shot off, half of each wing shot off and he body full of holes.
It is not an air-to-air dogfighter. It was also planned to be retired just before the first Gulf War then the plane showed that it still had a role.
That Avenger cannon makes a very distinct sound. It can put A LOT of depleted uranium ammo on target in a hurry.
Ever since I saw them in action when I was in basic, I really liked this plane.
