Yup, AT&T suing Verizon for their latest advertisement. In short AT&T is claiming the map used in the ad is too confusing. They believe that people will confuse the white spots on the map with no coverage at all not just 3G.

I usually don't post this sort of thing but thought it was funny.

too bad the advertising is very clear comparing 3g coverage areas to 3g coverage areas...

even better would be if they added t-mobile's crappy 3g coverage map.

Hey look. A video dedicated to stupid sons of bitches that walk in the middle of the street/sidewalk/hallway while staring at stupid unimportant shit and get pissed off when they accidentally bump into you.

The problem with the ad is that Verizon's 3g network is bursty, and barely does better speeds then AT&T's EDGE network which is much much larger than their 3g.

Since I know it's going to be asked, I'm going to give you the run down on why the lawsuit is going on.

Verizon uses EV-DO Rev A, which is the 3rd generation of CDMA. It's not even a true 3g connetion, 3g is wcdma, or UMTS. It allows download speeds of 600 kbit/s to 1.4 Mbit/s and uploading speeds of 500-800 kbit/s.

AT&T uses UMTS, a.k.a. WCDMA, and allows download speeds of 7.2 Mbit/s, with theoritical speeds of 21mbits/s. This is the network shown on the ad's in question and is in most major metro area's right now and still growing.

If you do not have a 3G connection with AT&T you're on the EDGE network. The EDGE network allows download speeds of 400kbit/s to 1.0 mbit/s which is available in over 1.75 million square miles and reaches 256 million people in the united states.

So, in short:

Verizon: 600kb to 1.4mb most major cities
AT&T: 400kb to 1.0 mb almost everywhere in the US and 7.2mb UMTS HSPDA in most major cities. AND, with AT&T you can simultaneously do data and voice while in 3g coverage. With Verizon you cannot.

The problem with the lawsuit is that not only will Verizon win, because the language is crystal clear, but the publicity will promote the fact that AT&T's 3G coverage is not as good as it should be.

Uh, Jox, the language is not crystal clear. See what I said. Their 3g coverage is a 3rd generation CDMA, not 3g as defined by the The Wireless Association. Furthermore, their "3G" data network is barely better then AT&T's "2G" network.

It's a complete misrepresentation of the data networks employed by both compaines.

And Sola is correct and I can never understand how those two companies can charge so much for their service too =(

We will probably never see cheap cell service in the U.S. unless they completely stop charging for voice. Since VOIP has been named the official technology being employed with LTE, I can see that happening but I doubt we'll get it for free.

As it stands, Airtime only costs us about 00.07 $ per minute, and customer's are charged anywhere from .69 to .25 so we're still making money from it.

This commercial to me makes a case for misleading. Not just the maps and the voice-over, but with what the people are doing in it. It seems to show that these friends are all meeting up except the girl that doesnt have 3g coverage, and thus cant use her phone at all.

Misleading is one thing. Comparing your product to another product when it's not even close to the same product is something else.

As a consumer, I don't care if it's misleading. I find it entertaining.

And I'm going to switch my business over to Verizon!

I got a chance to play with a droid for like 20-30 minutes, I'm probably going to get one Sunday and ditch AT&T.

I assume you currently have an iPhone?

If so, do you think the Droid is superior to the iPhone?

I had an iphone 3g up until around February when work 'standardized" on blackberries, so I got a blackberry bold 9000, which they reimbursed me for and paid for part of my service.

As I'm leaving the company, I'm more interested in a phone I can play with openly, rather than having to pay for a limited SDK.

As a more thorough answer, however...

I hated the iphone. I hated every bleeding second of using that damnable thing. The fact that it could neither send a picture message except via email, or tether, were the deciding factors in my ditching the iphone. I have no iphone experience post-3.0 software, so I can't vouch for my opinions anymore.

Suffice it to say that I was sufficiently displeased with the itunes lockin that I would not consider an iphone ever again.

I tether with my iphone. I actually used it for internet all over the country on my trip (I'll get to a final write up this weekend maybe, it's going to be a really long post). There are ways around everything if you are tech savy and willing to play. I do agree that there are many flaws with it but it is a fantastic device if you are in a good coverage area and have the right settings enabled.

In theory I agree, but in practice jailbreaking and installing third party control files isn't really something your average user will do.

i like my non-jailbroken iphone. it does the things i want it to do, and i don't care enough about the things it could do if i broke it to bother. i know most people will do it just to stick it to the man, but i don't really see the purpose. i didn't buy the phone because i wanted to hack it, i bought it so it could do the stuff it does out of the box.

It's like buying a car that you can only fill up at Shell stations, no were else. And you can only make right hand turns. It's nothing to do with sticking it to the man if you make a left hand turn in a car that is capable of doing so.

As far as the main story in this thread...

Quote:
A federal judge in Atlanta has ruled against AT&T in the carrier's request for an injunction against Verizon
.

LOL because? All iphones are.

Quote:
About a month ago there was an iPhone worm that changed the user's wallpaper to Rick Astley. The Australian student behind that little piece of malware said the software did nothing else and those affected by it could un-Rick their phone very easily. Ashley Towns said that his sole intention was to highlight how easy it is for attackers to gain access to your phone if you haven't taken the proper steps to protect yourself.

Fast forward just a few weeks and we have a malicious iPhone worm that can steal data and even take control of the phone, acting like a botnet. Similar to the Rick Rolling worm, this virus also targets jailbroken iPhones with an SSH password that were never changed from the default to something more secure
.

The Rickroll worm only targeted jailbroken phones. The quoted section says as much. So has there been one targeting 'all iPhones'?

Well, an exploit has been shown in the wild on jailbroken phones (though it's easy to fix). None that I know of exist on locked phones.

It's not as bad as some of the things that are packaged with warez, but still worth knowing.

and it only happens to jailbroken iphones with ssh installed.
