Been pretty dead here as of late, just trying to generate some diolog.

Think back to when you were young.
What book(s?) do you rememeber that stands out in your mind?

The one I remember from about 3rd or 4th grade is A Wrinkle in Time.(Link)
I remember this was the cover it had back then:

I also remember reading Arthur C Clark and Alfred Hitchcock books and storys back then.

My grandfather shoved "Pawn of Prophecy" by David Eddings in my face when I was in the 3rd grade. Damn him.

I remember reading the Xanth series from Piers Anthony. The first three books came in the same box and thus started my love of books.

The Hobbit was the first book for me. Well, first book I read that got me wanting to read more. Tackled LotR after that at like age 10.

I remember this cover because of the story of the robot mice that cleaned.

Quote:
Nine-fifteen, sang the clock, time to clean.

Out of warrens in the wall, tiny robot mice darted. The rooms were acrawl with the small cleaning animals, all rubber and metal. They thudded against chairs, whirling their mustached runners, kneading the rug nap, sucking gently at hidden dust. Then, like mysterious invaders, they popped into their burrows. Their pink electric eyes faded. The house was clean.

And for larger items, the 'copper scrap rats' would come and seize the offending matter with their miniature jaws.

I could really use a few for my apartment right now. :)

In third and fourth grade, I had an old dusty tome stuffed with about 50-100 short stories from the likes of Bradbury, Heinlein, etc. Carried it around with me for two years, reading and re-reading. Then one day it vanished from my cubby at school.
Of course, there's one story from that book I'd love to share with my kids, and I can't remember the name of the story, or the collection. Ah, well.

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and the Sherlock Holmes stories, all were really great. I hope you like those books and approve of me liking them as a child.

there's a very interesting cross-section of the posters here. a bunch of mediocre fantasy books and more bradbury than you'd want to read/burn (ho ho).

but i guess i read the judy blume books when i was like 10, and i stopped reading fantasy books when i turned 16 and had better things to do.

I hope so because that is what I read. Those and biographies of people I was interested in at the time, like Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Douglass MacArthur, Johnny Bench, Brooks Robinson, Hank Aaron and Thomas Edison.

To this day I like reading biographies.

I read library books quite a bit as a kid (free personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut), but didn't really find any of the books especially interesting until a friend loaned me -

Image

After that, I read a lot of D&D books, then started reading non-fiction. I rarely read a fictional book anymore. Harry Potter Series being the last. I do read non-fiction. I have been meaning to read more fiction, but there always seems to be something more appealing to me to read/do.

Image Was something I enjoyed, along with Image

My favorite though... were our Civil War encyclopedia books.... I don't remember what they looked liked, but I think they were red. .. I used to love those books.

It sucks that this is the best pic I can find of the cover, but Knaak's Ice Dragon was the first fantasy book I ever read and hooked me. Damn, 20 years ago. Getting old kinda sucks.
