My wife and I are going to see "Rent" in Cincinnati on a Thurs. 2pm show. Neither of us have ever been to a theater (nor do we know anyone who has) and was wondering what we should wear? The show is at the Aronoff Center - Procter & Gamble Hall.

There is a picture here http://www.cincinnatiarts.org/images/up ... nter12.jpg and everybody seems to just be wearing "normal" clothes.

I am guessing since it is an afternoon show, it will be pretty casual, but I really have no idea. Thanks for the help.

I'm glad you're going!

I suggest "dress casual." You don't need a tie or anything, but I also wouldn't like to see you in jeans and a ratty Megadeth T-shirt. I usually wear khaki's and a button up dress shirt of some kind.

You will probably see some people in very fancy dress, and others really dressed down.

Yeah, business casual is always acceptable. Long sleeves preferably, but otherwise as long as you aren't wearing acid wash cargo jorts and Converse All-Stars you should be fine.

Just outta curiosity, does the same apply for evening shows? Like 8pm Saturday? Or is that generally a little less casual?

on evening shows on weekends I'd actually wear a shirt and tie and nice slacks. jacket is usually optional but preferred.

I agree. Business casual for daytime shows, and business or business casual for evening shows.

For a Saturday evening show you'll see everything from slacks and a polo shirt to tuxes. Personally, I like dressing up for theatre outings, so I'd let your wife decide on how dressy she would like to go.

When I goto the theatre I usually have distressed jeans with no rips and a good dress casual long sleeved shirt. This is small venues though, like 100-300 seats. The only people I see all dressed up are age 60+ folks, everyone my age (35ish) is good jeans/khakis and dress casual shirts.

Me and Topher go to the theatre at least 12 times a year. I suggest Nice Slacks and a Shirt always a best option!

We have seen rent a lot of times love that show! Have the last performance from the original New York cast on blu ray :D

If your wife has any formal gowns that fit her (I still keep my size 0 prom dress), let her wear one and dress appropriately. As a female with about 10 formal gowns in her closet, it's nice to have a chance to wear one and not look like a weirdo. If you do so and remind her often of how great she looks, you will probably be "rewarded" :P.

Yeah, women still fall for the "compliment" thing.

Amazing that they haven't figured it out yet.

Not when I know someone's doing it to get something. (Read: Most of the time.)

In fact, it kinda pisses me off. Not sure why I have such an aversion to it, hm.

Yes, guys don't, because guys generally don't need a compliment to "fall for." Guys are generally in the mood for sex pretty much all the time. You don't have to convince a guy to have sex, while sometimes you do for women.

This is his wife...not some random hook up. I would hope that he wouldn't have to be untruthful to compliment her. Dressing up and feeling glamorous and appreciated by a spouse is for most women more of a turn on than for a man. I was offering a reminder of this as a female. The guy is going to see a Broadway-type show and dress up for it; it seems like he must love his wife. I'm not sure why it would be assumed compliments would be deceitful.
