What a sad day. Too many thoughts are swimming around my head to post anything cohesive but I have to at least say that I believe that in a few years, if not sooner, the true impact of his death will be seen in our politics.

I don't know about politics, but Mike's Liquor has already gone out of business from the loss of revenue.

It's a little depressing to me that after a few days Ted has 2 posts and the Michael Jackson thread had 2 pages.

RIP Ted. You will be missed.

So Joxur, do you honestly feel that any/all good the man did is meaningless because of a single incident?

It is strange to me that, with so many younger people (both here & elsewhere) who would self-identify as 'true liberal', Sen. Kennedy's passing has been barely if at all acknowledged.

For me, one of the saddest aspects of his illness and death is the lack of anyone who actually did whatever was necessary to get things done left in Congress. There is nobody left who can/will buck their party to get some of what they want. Nobody left who realizes that moving forward slowly is better than standing in place and screaming that they didn't get the entirety of their wishes. Don't get me wrong, he was not the only one who did that (Tip O'Neill, Newt Gingrich, to name just 2 also accomplished alot by taking small pieces) but he was the last. I see nobody who will willingly take part of what they want and share credit with the other side rather than declaring a winner and loser.

Even with all the positions he had that I did not favor, Sen. Kennedy was the last of the old-school politicians. He did not look at an us vs them attitude but as like people with differing opinions.

I didn't have a problem with Kennedy, but I didn't really love him, either. While you're right that we don't have very many dealmakers left, that is more of an indictment against our current state of cult-of-personality-politics than it is about whether Kennedy was a great senator or not.

Perhaps the fact that people are talking about his wife as his replacement might give you an idea why I 'm not particularly fond of dynastic politics. You also have to realize that I'm an independent, so the passing of a liberal icon doesn't mean all that much to me.

I'm not entirely sure you're correct there, Jox. I believe that the reason Kennedy became a senator was because of dynastic politics (orchestrated almost solely by Joe) and that later, as he grew in gravitas in the Senate (because he wasn't that effective early) he used the name Kennedy to enable himself to tap into that dynastic past to great effect. Certainly better than Rockefeller has.

I agree about Mrs. Kennedy, except that it would be for a very limited time and she couldn't run for the seat in the special election. Now, if she were to use her status as widow to browbeat other Democrats into falling in line on healthcare; THAT I would have serious issues with.

I expect to see a Kennedy on the ballot in the special election to fill the seat but I don't think it will be Vicki.

I'm not sure what you're referring to Kula. I was just stating my opinion about Kennedy, not about how he got where he was. Either you're confused or I am :)

At least Mike never killed anyone. He just let youngsters suck his penis like a lollipop, which was pretty nice of him if you ask me.
