This isn't surprising, there's a senate subcommittee right now that is basically targeting all usenet / irc / newsboards etc because they are filled with nothing but kiddie porn etc.

I will go fetch the article from Tom's Hardware later after I get to work.

4chan has been undergoing a nearly constant denial of service attack for the last several months if not years.

this was probably just a reflection of that, and AT&T's network admins did what any network admin should have done -- null route the return traffic and figure out what the fuck was going on.

Instead of blocking it for the few customers it was affecting they just blocked it across the whole network. meh

easier that way :P When a network admin goes "oh fuck" it's faster to just null route.

I have a friend at AT&T that is so far removed from the data center/ISP aspects of AT&T that it isn't even funny. He does, however has his name and work cell on the website SOMEWHERE. As a result, he started receiving phone calls from random people saying things like: "This is the internet calling, turn 4chan back on". He had no clue what was going on. Heh.

Pretty much sums up 4chan for me (as a vague blindly flailing entity that scattershots anything it can reach, regardless of the situation) and why I was so curious to see if the action was deliberate on AT&T's part and if they would follow through with it if it was. Would have been an interesting test to see if they'd back down to the scattershot tactics of 4chan or not.
