I still don't get twitter. To me, it just seems like an enormously popular fad.

ESPN also heavily promotes itself on Twitter.

I don't get it either. Do I really care what you had for dinner tonight? Or when you went to the bathroom?

Is our society really becoming such that if a human being is left alone for more than 15 minutes that that person goes into shock and dies? Thus this constant need for attention from anyone, anywhere, anytime?

I don't use Twitter, but it sounds like those people that update their facebook status every 5 minutes.

THere are those who update every 30 seconds. Those people usually aren't followed. Then there are those who share interesting links, sites, images, or thoughts throughout the day. And, if that bugs you too, you can always stop following said person.
It's a harmless social app, and I fail to see where the vitriol comes from.

I think I would appreciate it more if facebook didn't do the exact same thing already only better.

I think Twitter is meant to further oversaturate an already oversaturated world of electronic uppdating. In my book, that is lame.

It reminds me of that guy on Something About Mary..."SIX MINUTE ABS!" Because 7, 10, 12, etc. minute abs just wasn't good enough, right? Perhaps I will design a new webservice called Blip.com that allows you to shoot the world your status in 100 characters or less, just to undercut Twitter's 140 characters. It'll be all the rage! Seriously, when is enough going to be enough?

I already neglect facebook. Thanks to facebook though, I know the plans for my 20 year reunion... I can't believe I'm that old.

I use Twitter. It's definitely become more than posts about what you eat and when you poop.

It has its uses. Yes, Facebook probably does the status updates better (its link handling is great), but Twitter compliments Facebook, as you automatically have your tweets post to Facebook.

If I might also speculate, part of the vitriol might come from the fact that anyone with the ability to write PHP pages, has 10 minutes, and possesses a 10 dollar/month web server account with a database plan could do the same thing as twitter.

Yeah, that 10 dollar a month web server will quickly turn into several thousand dollars a month with bandwidth overages

It's a good tool for important people like you, Leo, especially if you are talking to a legion of supporters/followers. But, for insignificant nobodies like me I think it's rather useless.

I have a handful of followers, and we maintain pretty regular conversations via twitter.

Without Twitter, I would not be as up to date with the inspiring revolution and the horrific backlash going on right now in Iran.

Heard a use for Twitter this past weekend that I hadn't thought about: an automated text message delivery system.

Get a group of people to create Twitter accounts and activate text message retrieval, then you can communicate with all of them very easily, even without sharing numbers if you want. It'd be a very short term use, but a creative idea.
