Just started checking them out so I don't have any opinions yet. The bar scanner app is pretty cool. Anyone else have the G1? What are your must have apps?

Bar Scanner is cool, its overall usage as a phone is decent but HORRIBLE battery life... I likes to auto connect to the nearest Wireless network thats a huge drain on the phone.

The battery life on all the new fancy phones (Instinct, iPhone) sucks.

My Instinct has great battery life. I'm a very active user, too. Phone calls, texting, work email, gmail, etc. All day long.

My battery still lasts all day and even into the next. Sometimes two full days (depending on usage, obv).

I think maybe people started thinking the battery life sucked on the Instinct because it comes with 2 batteries. But, I dunno.

I don't have any complaints with battery life on the IPhone 3G but i'm not using the 3G right now except when I use the GPS.

It has done much better in comparison to any other cell phone I have owned.

I have an Instinct. The battery life for one battery sucks. There's a reason why it comes with two. Virtually every review of the Instinct comments negatively on the battery life. I bought an extra wall charger for when I'm at work and a car charger in the event that I want to use the GPS some day. Maybe you just got lucky and have a super battery prototype.

Crazy.

Or maybe I'm not as much of a heavy user as I thought I was.

I had an iPhone and it's quality was horrid. The battery life does indeed suck, I had to charge it at least twice a day just between normal phone usage like texting, checking e-mail, etc. AT&T has a shitty network too. I'd miss calls in my house and just get voicemail notifications. Why would I get the voicemail notifications but not the calls? I took that piece of shit back.

I have a gPhone now. Way better. Battery life is improved and I just charge overnight like I would normally do any regular phone. The only thing that annoys me about the phone is how quickly the keyboard goes dark after not typing anything (3 to 5 seconds maybe?) or the screen goes dark on calls after 3 to 5 seconds too. I can't find anywhere to change that option.

I'm loving the AntPlayer so far as it allows me to stream NPR on my phone. :D

I use my iPhone for work, personal calls, gaming, and just casual goofing around. I charge it every two days and I use it quite a bit. I don't a time that it's not doing something. Even people at my work will take it and play around on it and still get 1.5 - 2 days out of it before I charge it at 10%.

Yours is an exception to the ruler. Generally the iPhone is regarded as having atrocious battery life.

It all really depends on use.

Most days, my 3G has 80% when I get home to charge it.

But if I'm on it a lot, either making calls, using apps, or online, it's going to drain a lot faster.

I don't think it's significantly different from my prior phones (Moto Q9H, HTC Wizard, HTC Typhoon) in that respect. The significant difference is that it does a lot more out of the box and practically begs to be highly used... thus resulting in shorter battery life.

My iPhone battery lasts 3-4 days. I'm a heavy texter too.

Good point. That's really where both of these devices can shine.

If I could get my hands on a cheap G1, I'd try creating an app or two.

In fact, I have some ideas for iPhone apps I'm going to try out.

Yes, it looks that way. I registered for the iPhone SDK download and I only see an option for 10.5.5, nothing for Windows (even though I'm on a Windows machine atm).

Yeah it really does. Once you get over the "OMFG TEH HOLE SCREEN IZ A BUTTAN!" nonsense, you realize that the navigation and typing on that phone blow ass.

Typing and navigation is fine for me, Blackberrys usually have a larger learning curve then other phones. I also like Verizon over the others in this area. I tried AT&T for a bit but the coverage in my area wasn't as good as Verizons and their prices are the exact same for me.

Once I got used to the iphone, it wasn't so bad.

I still miss a physical keyboard. I hope AT&T comes out with an android phone soon.

They got Linux semi running on the IPhone 3G, people are already talking about trying to put Android on it.

EA Mobile has released Tetris and Monopoly for the G1 with plans for more. They cost $7.99 so you can't get them through market yet. Gotta go to the EA Website.

I keep seeing updates for my applications for the Android cupcake update. Has the cupcake update been released? If so, how do I download it?

Also apps I currently love:

Chompsms.com

PhoneFusion VM

Ringdroid rocks

Gmote is pretty nice to have.

If I use my phone regularly in areas with piss poor signal quality I get about half the battery life. But generally I don't use it much and charge it about twice a week.

The 1.5 cupcake update is making its way around now. If you're impatient, you can root and update your phone yourself. This way you can install apps to your SD card. :)

http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/05/01/when- ... oming-out/

As far as apps, here are a few I use/suggest that you haven't mentioned already.

Locale

Creates phone profiles based on your location. I use it to automatically turn my phone on vibrate whenever I'm at work. It can change a number of other options, such as toggling bluetooth, wifi, wallpaper, ringtones, etc.

aHome
Allows the use of custom skins. There are a few of them out there (dxHome, OpenHome).

Lock 2.0
Installs custom lock screens with an iphone-like slider.

PF Voicemail
Visual voicemail for android. I know you mentioned this but I hear that T-Mobile is going to be supporting Visual Voicemail natively so you may not need this later on.

fBook
Wrapper for Facebook's mobile site. Since Facebook hates Google, don't expect them to be writing their own app anytime soon.

nswPlayer
One of the best video players for the android (and it's free!). Also plays audio and will view pictures too.

Torrent-Fu
Allows you to control uTorrent from your Android phone. Will allow you to scan a barcode and it will search for torrents for that barcode which you can then send to your uTorrent client on a home computer.

Random thoughts on battery life - I have had my Palm Treo for about 1.5 years and remain impressed by the battery life. I am not a heavy user, but I can go 3-4 days without charging and I don't think I have ever had the battery die. On the flipside, the Razr I had before seemed to die if I didn't charge it once a day.

My contract expires here soon, not sure what I'm going to. Heard of the Pre, no idea what the price point is.

The Pre will be what makes or breaks Palm's future. If it doesn't take off and succeed on a level that approaches the Razr, Palm is done.

I haven't used a Palm device since '99 but I've been looking forward to the Pre since its announcement back in January.

They announced a date a price today. June 6th, $199 w/ $100 rebate and 2-year contract.

Well, I at least like Windows CE. But all I really care about is a mobile calendar, so I'm easy.

I think the palm will do well, most of the sprint stores ive spoken too have cleared out a huge chunk of inventory to stock up on these.
