I've never really been big into anime. I recently purchased the Ninja Scroll series and Neon Genesis Evangelion on DVD and have enjoyed them. I also watched the FullMetal Alchemist series which seemed more for a younger crowd but I still liked it. My daughters liked it as well (they both watch Avatar the Last Airbender). <
>
<
>
I'm looking for other recommendations of series that are similar to Ninja Scroll and Neon Genesis. I'm also open other shows/movies that my kids (8 and 12) may enjoy too. <
>
<
>
Any suggestions?<

My favorite anime is Gungrave, Hellsing is good, Saiyuki and Orphen also good <
>
<
>
Gungrave = A awesome story of Honor, love, loss and betrayal. First episode shows 'Beyond The Grave' Who is more than a man now, he came back from the dead to protect those he loves....and from there they basically fade into how he got to where he was and how he died, and came back, and then the story picks up from that spot again later on down.<
>
<
>
Hellsing = Vampire stuff, mostly about 'The Hellsing Orginization' and how they take down vampires, most of which are killed by Alucard, who is a very powerful vampire himself, and a new recruit that Alucard
ings in.<
>
<
>
Saiyuki = this one i havent finished yet but its about demons coming together to kill other demons who are trying to kill all the humans i think...best part about saiyuki is there blatent and more up to date jokes<
>
<
>
Orphen = A magic user on a quest to free someone he loves from a bad curse, along with his apprentice, and a really annoying girl for comic relief.<

<

just a few I have liked so far for ya <i>Edited by: Wynson at: 12/11/05 3:11 am<

Bleach is top notch of the running series.<
>
Naruto is good, but is geting rather streched out. They need to move the series along.<

Full Metal Panic! is great, all three seasons.<

Trigun, Coyboy Bebop and Evangelion are all classics. <i></i>

Death rehashes the first 24 epsiodes in a 2 hour movie, cut in a differnt fashion, then goes and completely redoes 25 and 26 in a differnt fashion for those who were either two confused by the esoteric original ending, or just did not like it. (personally; I dug the orignal ending)<

Samurai Champloo. Oddly enough once they get past the "Fuu get's kidnapped" stuff, this show is showing.. uh.. promise.<

<

Samurai 7, having only seen the first DVD? Well worth the money.<

FLCL. Uhm. Yeah. For me? Not a chance. But for those of you DEEP, and I do mean DEEP into the mind-fuck Neon Genesis was and is, this is a good blow off of steam. Poruduced by the people who made Neon genesis just for that purpose. Only 6 episodes long. <i></i>

I love Grave of the Fireflies, and I unabashedly bawl my way through it a few times a year.<

Huge fan of the seminal work, Akira. I'm also partial to Vampire Hunter D but the art is of a slightly different, almost 'sloppier' style. <

Series-wise, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach, Outlaw Star, and Bubblegum Crisis were all big hits in my household.<

Hmm.. You liked ninja scroll...and evangellion.<

<

Do you prefer the movies, or the series ? I prefer anime series myself, but some prefer the movies. Anyway, here are some suggestions :<
>
<
>
RahXephon =Kinda Like Evangellion, but not nearly as strange near the end.<
>
<
>
NOIR = Story about two female assassins who team up to perform their work. This is a backdrop into figuring out why the young assassin has no memory, yet is so good at what she does.<
>
<
>
Cowboy bebop = Story about 4 unlikely bounty hunters. Set in space<
>
<
>
Angelic Layer (for your daughters) = Young girl grows up a little as she takes part in a sport where you build "battledolls" and have them fight for you.<
>
<
>
(note, angelic layer sounds stupid, but is actually pretty good, lots of action, yet has some story to it too...)<

Movie types :<

<

Vampire Hunter D (the second one)<

Ninja Scroll (the movie is much much better than the series)<

Seem to recall Fist of the North Star being very.. bloody.. extravagently so... ludicrously so. But it's been a good ten years I think since I laid eyes on it.<
>
<
>
Wanna be put to sleep? Go rent Harmageddon.<
>
<
>
Visually intruiged, and alternetly disgustied at the same time? Urotsukidoji Any of the 4 series. ~IF~ you could get rid of the tentaclkes, and uh.. sex. There's a good story in there... shame it had to be buried in Tentacle-Hentai.<
>
<
>
Bibbglegum Crisis, BubbleGum Crash, AD Police, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, and the new AD Police I like a lot.<
>
<
>
And All i can remember is Anipuna, and Yunipina.. the mercenary cat girls, and the tank Bonaprte.. why can't I think of the series name? The original series was good but a bit droll. I liked the new one better.<
>
<
>
As mentioned earlier. Either rendition of Macross Plus. Either the mini-series or the mvovie(Differning cuts is all, btu the story changes for each cut quite a bit). <
>
<
>
If you pick up Macross 2 however. Take the tape or DVD, and run yourself off a
idge and be done with it. BEFORE you watch it. It was done by the original Macross Mecha Designer, but not the original story creator. It can be visually stunning, but the story whore's for dead moose.<
>
<
>
Personal opinions vary, but Outlaw Star should have been outlawed from television.<
>
<
>
Hmm. Venus Wars? Good movie. if you can stay awake. Very slow. <
>
<
>
Wanna be freaked out by random inserts of real film violence? Genocyber, damned odd story.<
>
<
>
Trying hard to think. All my anime of any serious quality is in storage, and has been boxed up since Sept 2001, I had over 140+ Anime tapes back then.<
>
<
>
Cutie Honey? Barf. For those who wished Sailor Moon showed bare skin when the girls changed forms. And just as cheesy.<
>
<
>
Iczer One? The original series was... passable. Look for Red Ass and Blue Balls to appear. (inside joke, watch it and figure it out) Haven't seen any of the newer stuff.<
>
<
>
Super Science Ninja Team Gatchaman! The new series. Only watch for Nostalgia's sake. if you remember G-Force as a child.<
>
<
>
Zillion. Ultra rare and basically unknown. If you liked Macross and the like. You'll like this rather
ight(in color, not wit) series. It's short too, 6-7 tapes. Never did see any of it on DVD. Cheer for the kids running around with Old SEGA master system guns<
>
<
>
Street Fight 2 the Movie. Not connected to the goofy series. or the abortion of a live Action movie, look for the Unrated one. The bood is more prevalent, and there is an obligatory shower scene. There's nothing like Chun Li fighting Vega in that movie, the thing she does to his face with her foot makes me cringe every time I see it.<
>
<
>
Fatal Fury? The whole series. Screw everyone else. I liked it. Watch it. Terry Bogard's "girlfriend" in tyhe first tape? Hubba hubba... why can't more Anime women be shaped like that? Dress that way too....<
>
<
>
That Final Fantasy Anime they made? I puked halfway through the first tape. Don't watch it. (Not Advent Children, differnt series, late 90's)<
>
<
>
I am sure there is more, one series keeps slipping through my mind, and I can't think of the name of it. Some guy genetically grown and trained to fight.. kills everything in sight. sprays blood all over the damn place, set on some other world in the future(sounds like half the anime in production or ever made doesn't it?) His character in armor was the corporate logog fomr an Anime production company here in America. Whatever in the hell it was.. avoid it like the plague. Helpful, huh?<

Perfect Blue is probably the only sci-fi'ish show I ever liked other then Outlaw Star, that was a really good show.<

And the one that has a setting in a online game....for some odd reason I forget the name but there is like a more adult type that was really good and then a more kiddy one that was just retarded. They made like 4 games for the ps2 about it that should have been made into one. Once I hear the name I will be like DUH.<

WTF is with all those crazy names....are they just poor english translations or are they doing some pretty hard core drugs before picking the names of these series. <i></i>

Someone, I won't name names "TurboPowa"(yes I will), has been watching too much Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. <
>
<
>
As for the naming conventions on some anime? Some, I have read, heard interviews and been told, are simply a matter of things the people making the anime think just sound cool in English. Plastic Little being one of those unfortunate animes (please, for the love of god. don't watch that...)<
>
<
>
Some, like Samurai Champloo, make perfect sense, IF, you do the research into their meanings.<
>
<
>
Neon Genesis Evangelion Makes sense too... if you think a little bit about it. Should have been Neo, not Neon, Genesis, and something pertaining to Angel. I guess Evangleion fits the bill for what they wanted. [New Beginning Race/Angel. Big F-in clue about the plot.]<
>
<
>
Not sure what in the hell Perfect Blue, or Harmageddon had to do with thier indivudal titles though. <i></i>

The toys straight from japan, and the story boards straight from Japan had a listing of 3 Voltrons. All were designed by the same scientist as he moved out from the more central part of the Galaxy. Each was also succesively more powerful than the last over all. [Each had a weakness too, but for the life of me I don't remember what they were]<

I had the misfortune like a lot of kids when I was younger to have a father in the military, who chose to take over seas duties and decided NOT to take his family with him. One of the benefits however during his various assignments, was being assigned in Japan, and other asian countries. He used to send me toys, and some 8mm bootlegged recordings of shows. Great visually. but in a forgien language. I had no idea what was being said.<
>
<
>
Some of those toys. such as the Japanese version of Mazinga[Shogun Warriors] (Tranzor-Z in the states), were duplicated but never fully replicated in the states(my Mazinga had the full-on spaceship module in the head, the American Versions had a ship you could PRY out. but the ship had no nose cone, and was never meant to actually be removed from the body. SOME inital copies of the toy were just shipped over from japan, but after a short period they disconiued the spaceship to america. Never knew why.)<

I had dozens of little toys all boxed up and covered in Kanji characters.<

Years later after he left the service. He had friends who would still send him stuff at his request for me to get for christmas. Two of those toys I recived were Voltron 1 and 3, the full on diecast versions[a lost art, inside joke for cartoon watchers] of the toys, fully integratable, and fully poseable. The likes of which was, again, duplicated, but not quite replicated here in the states.<
>
<
>
The people who would send my father these toys would also translate the package markings for me (I was older by this time. i wanted to know). The boxes they stated the story, in short, of the Voltrons on the package. Including showing a little galaxy map on one side that showed the scientists path as he left on a mission to "explore another glaxay". <
>
<
>
The scientist left the Voltrons behind as defenders of the Galaxy, I guess do to altruism? They never really went into that. <
>
<
>
However each box on one side showed the exact same set of panels. The 15 Vehicles of what amounted to "Galactic Central Command", the 3 Robots of the Central Galaxy, and the 5 Lions left to defend the outer territories. Voltrons 1, 2, and 3. In order of creation. From center to outside.<
>
<
>
Much like Robotech/Macross, the Voltron shows "we" got were either bastard versions of the Japanese versions, or outright changes to make them fit an american storyline.<
>
<
>
I did try, BTW, to get a toy copy of Voltron 2, the Three robots. Apparently, however, the show and the toy line suffered much the same as many shows do in the states. Extremely poor popularity. The show didn't last long enough for more than a few toys to be made, and quickly fell into obscurity. Not even sure many japanese kids would even know what it was short of seeing the 3 robots on the box of the toys, Which I am given to understand were shortly removed as well since they did not sell well, and were no longer being made.<
>
<
>
Father passed away in '86, and from there I lost all contact with any ability to receive toys from japan until the internet appeared, and I haven't been able to track down any of the Voltron stuff from the original toy line since. Haven't looked much either though.<

I guess it was more popular than I realized... Here...<

I could have done a little more searching on it, but as I don't collecvt japanese toys much anymore, each time I thoght about it. I just sorta let it go and forgot it shortly thereafter. This just made me go look.<

<

The box covering for the other Voltrons was different however for the original Japense versions. At least for Voltron 2. I assume so. since the boxes for Votron 1 and 3 that I had were totally different, and both had the same over all theme.<

Should be the final hijack, sorry again. <i></i>

I suppose that should have read "No popularity" as opposed to poor... As it appears the toys made it to production, but no show was ever made...<

Would appear the "reasons" the Voltrons were made differ based on which boxes you read, and which ones you believe. <

Since you linked the Wikipedia on Voltron, you now know that you were wrong about Voltron.<
>
<
>
Matchbox released the voltrons mislabeled. But Lion Voltron was indeed the first, Vehicle 2, and Gladiator, never released, was 3rd. <i></i>

*snerk* Matchbox released the American Versions of the toys.<
>
<
>
The original japanese versions had NO listing whatsoever of any american company anywhere on the toys or the boxes as the toys producers.<
>
<
>
Like I said, the japanese toys also showed a differing storyline when translated from the ones available here, and even the story stuff shown in the Wiki.<
>
<
>
The "reasons given" for the toys on the japense boxes were entirely differnt from what is shown. <
>
<
>
Since the storylines, and toys originated in japan, I'll take their word for what they did or did not mean.<
>
<
>
Besides looking at the Wiki, it does say that the Lions were Released as a series first, it doesn't say anything about how they were labelled as toys.<
>
<
>
After all, the first Star Wars we all remember being put out was Epsiode 4 after all. The Lions being Labaled as Voltron 3, is no different.<
>
<
>
You can argue with me all you want. But I had the toys for a long time in possession, and in hand. Reality is though. I had a parent die, and I had a divorce of both parents before that. so anything I had from the era, has since gone up in smoke, so to speak.<
>
<
>
Somehow though. I think we have more than hijacked this thread with nonsense enough as it is. <i></i>

Then simply look at the release dates of the Japanese series versions the shows were based off of.<
>
<
>
You DID read the Wiki, right?<
>
<
>
Lion Voltron (Voltron 1) was based off of Hundred Beast King GoLion which was released in 1981.<
>
<
>
Vehicle Voltron (Voltron 2) was based off of Armored Fleet Dairugger XV which was released in 1982.<
>
<
>
Voltron was the American version, just like robotech. To say that the Lion Voltron wasn't the first would be like saying that there wasn't only 1 SDF-1 class ship in Robotech, because even though there was in Robotech, in Macross there were a fleet of SDF-1 class ships. The point being, if you talk Voltron or Robotech, you are referring to the American iteration. If you talk GoLions or Macross, you speak of the original. Semantics, I know.<

From the Wiki<

<

Quote:There were plans for yet another Voltron, which would have been based on the series Light Speed Electric God Albegas (Kôsoku Denjin Arubegasu). This one would have been three smaller humanoid robots that combined to form one larger robot. Due to the strong popularity of the Lion Voltron, the unenthusiastic response to the Vehicle Voltron and Albegas' being a flop in Japan, World Events Productions, the St. Louis, Missouri-based company who owns the rights for both Voltron series, ultimately decided against another alternate Voltron series. Matchbox released a toy of Gladiator Voltron labeled Voltron II, in addition to Voltron I (Vehicle Voltron) and Voltron III (Lion Voltron) <i></i>

Elfen Lied* And I actually found it to be an... Interesting to say the least ... Series. Have all four Vectors. Bought them as they were released. Apart from the totally random and pointless nudity, it's actually a pretty good series. <i></i>

FLCL is only 6 episodes but i know it seems like it's more since they really fuck around with the timeline during some of the episodes. <a href="http://www.botepidemic.com/frikbot/q1mons/"><img src="http://www.botepidemic.com/frikbot/q1mons/enforcer.jpg" border=0 alt="I'm An Enforcer! One Piece is a great show that hasn't been mentioned. It's an exciting pirate adventure on the high seas with a blend of comedy, action and adventure. It follows the Straw Hat Pirate crew as they follow their dreams during the great age of pirates. It is really long and already has 253 shows aired in Japan with no sign of ever stopping. <
>
<
>
The american version airing on kids wb/cartoon network is complete crap with tons of editing and dumbing down along with one of the worst dubs ever. You can download fansubs up through episode 167 here. <

Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are great, and good ones to watch if you're not too sure if you like anime or are just getting into it or whatever. Both balance a good plot with solid characters and have a nice mix of serious and goofy episodes. <
>
<
>
Other than that, I won't repeat what others have said, but I will never stop recommending this series, as it's by far one of my favorites - Last Exile. Absolutely beautiful animation and a great plot, though it started out kinda slow.<
>
<
>
I'm also really enjoying Zettai Shonen, but I wouldn't really recommend that one for those just getting into anime. It's weird, a little off the wall, and has you going '.. uh, what?' more often than not, but I can't get enough of it. <

I know some of these were mentioned, but if more than one person says the same anime then chances are it's worth watching. <a href="http://www.botepidemic.com/frikbot/q1mons/"><img src="http://www.botepidemic.com/frikbot/q1mons/enforcer.jpg" border=0 alt="I'm An Enforcer!
